Pink Ocean: Breast Cancer Awareness Walk

Getting on the Subway , there is a greater sense of awareness to the colors that people wear. Pink accents pointed out each person’s purpose for sunday morning travel. Pink sweaters, the soles of sneakers, caps, headbands completely took over the color scheme and if sunday was represented by a color then it would be pink.  Everybody walked in unison, if one person crossed got off the train then everybody followed and once off the train if one person cross the road then everybody repeated the same pattern of movement.  The closer to central park we got, there was a  defiant  crescendo invading my ears.  While approaching the gathering crowd the more compacted people became. Groups holding hands and walking close to each other, team leaders running around with the designated t-shirts for groups, two teenage girls applying pink face paint to their faces  while two other girls were fixing theirs. All shades of pink from baby powder pink to hot, vibrant pink  were present in an atmosphere that became increasingly hectic.

One of Katy Perry’s song was blasting while the host was calling out different groups to announce their presence by yelling out.  A man on stood on top of a bench dancing and jumping up and down while having his arms around two other men. The great portion of the crowd gathered at the starting line getting ready for the signal to start walking.  Cell Phones were everywhere, individuals did not even pay attention to the fact that they were in the pictures of others because they too were busy taking pictures too.  With a shout the walk was started and everybody moved at a slow pace, making sure to stay close to their companions. Volunteers on the other side of the barricade raised their hands for high-fives while the participants close to them raised their hands and made  contact.  Since it was early morning the temperature was cool yet as the sun rose, people started to take off their pink sweaters and jackets and carried them in their arms or tied them around their waists.  The further we got from the finish line the more disperse the crowd got. And even though some people were falling behind they still cheered when the volunteers cheered. Everybody wearing pink became one, encouraging each other through smiles and just even willingness to participate.  By wearing pink a connection was established and this pink ocean in unison where waves of people rose at the starting point and crashed at the finish line with the same excitement all throughout.
