Almost barren of people in comparison to other exhibitions, the Modern and Contemporary exhibition provided me with enough space and peace to move around freely. I could take a seat if I wanted to or I could just stand, the point being that my options were all open. The deafening silence made me more conscious of the sound of my voice, whispers sounded like shouts and cut through the air as if others were mandated to hear it. The wooden polished floor and the high white walls created a very spacious atmosphere. Huge canvases hung on the walls, their sizes shrinking the human body in comparison. Orange, red, and green hues called for attention, immediately demanding of the observer to analyze their purpose was. In particular what caught my attention was a set of three paintings on the same wall, they all seemed to coordinate well with one another due to their color combinations matching well. Green and orange accents decorated bland sand colored backgrounds. Such contrasts created an intimate connection between the art and the viewer. The sizes of the three artworks created a perfect curve with the artwork in the middle being the tallest while the art to the left and the right both matched in proportions, at least to the naked eye they did. This creation of balance through organization gave the gallery a peaceful ambience as supposed to a chaotic one. Opposing this was a fiery red painting, the red and orange hues making it seem like a burning fire wanted to completely invade your line of vision. The texture of the art also did not seem very smooth, bringing it even more alive than the life that the colors provide. Even though this contrasts the wall of the three other artworks, the open and wide space of the gallery allows this to happen without it being distasteful. Even though the artworks are set up the way they are for a reason, they are all stand alone pieces. When visiting such places, a better experience is gotten out of exhibitions that allow one to move around freely without being bombarded from all angles by people. It is something that rarely happens in a New Yorker’s life since things such as public transportation make it impossible but we need to find such places to create a balance in one’s life.
