Stan Altman is a tenured Professor in the School of Public Affairs; he served as the School’s Dean from 1999-2005.  Dr. Altman has held a number of administrative positions in higher education including Deputy to the President, SUNY Stony Brook and Associate Provost for Health Policy, State University of New York.  Trained as an engineer, Dr. Altman was one of an early vanguard of professionals with strong applied mathematics and engineering backgrounds who chose to apply their skills to the delivery of public services. In building a career to achieve his ambitious public sector objectives, Dr. Altman has developed a powerful cross-disciplinary approach to problem solving. Dr. Altman holds a doctorate in Systems Science from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, a Masters of Science in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University, and a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering from the City College of New York.  His areas of expertise and interests include strategic planning, improving productivity of public services, nonprofit management, health policy and social entrepreneurship.

Warner Babcock is an adjunct faculty member teaching Boards, Governance and Leadership with Entrepreneurial and Family Firms and Family Business Management. Warner is the Chairman and CEO of AM Private Enterprises, Inc., a registered investment advisory firm that specializes in advising family enterprises. Prior to AM Private Enterprises, Mr. Babcock was the Chairman and CEO of AM Private Investments, Inc, an investment advisory firm that specializes in directly investing in and creating a range of ventures, primarily to assist the next generation. He is also the former Chairman and CEO for 24 years of AMP, a corporate strategy and development management company, a firm that specialized in developing and implementing comprehensive growth strategies, as well as assists with M&A, corporate venture investments, alliances, and acquiring new technologies for leading family, private and public corporations. Earlier in his career, Mr. Babcock founded and invested in start-ups, as well as built a manufacturing company based on his patents, introducing seven products manufactured at seven plants around the US with licensees overseas. Mr. Babcock has also been a CEO of a family business, trustee, family council member, and board member of many ventures and organizations, including International Association of Attorneys for Family-Held Enterprises, Inc. He is also a Family Firm Institute Fellow and National Association for Corporate Directors – Governance Fellow. Warner holds a BA in chemistry from UNC Chapel Hill and an MBA from Emory University.

Walter Barandiaran is a Managing Partner and co-founder of The Argentum Group, a New York Based private equity firm which provides expansion capital to small/mid sized businesses with market leading potential in the areas of outsourced services, technology and healthcare. Walter has more than 18 years of private equity experience, during which he has led over 30 investments for Argentum investment funds. Walter’s areas of investment expertise includes outsourced services, manufacturing, clean (environmental) technologies, and enterprise software. Walter has a BBA ‘79 from Baruch College.

John B. Clark is currently the Acting University Executive Director of the City University of New York’s (CUNY) Office of Business and Industry Relations.  Before joining CUNY, he was a visiting professor at Stony Brook University.  Prior to that position, he was Interim Chancellor of the State University of New York (SUNY).  During the course of his career at SUNY, Dr. Clark was the interim president of four of its colleges; Plattsburgh, Brockport, Alfred State and Optometry.  He also served as interim Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management and University Life at SUNY System Administration. Before joining SUNY, he worked as a Wall Street analyst and investment banker specializing in health and higher education for eighteen years.  He was named to the Institutional Investor’s All-American Research Team (honorable mention).  Dr. Clark also held various positions in New York City and State government and is a Vietnam-era veteran. Dr. Clark received his B.A. in History, cum laude, from Providence College; M.P.A. from the John Jay College of Criminal Justice (CUNY); M.A. in Economics from Fordham University; M.A. in Philosophy from New York University and Doctorate in Education from Teachers College, Columbia University.  His doctoral dissertation was on the works of John Henry Cardinal Newman, author of the classic, The Idea of A University.

Vincent Carbonell, Esq.  is the Founder and President of United Reprographic Services and a member of New York Law School Board of Trustees. Through his reprographic company, Carbonell created blueprints for the Freedom Tower. Carbonell also founded DWI Prevention Institute, where he was President for 3 years. During these years he fostered social responsibility throughout establishments that served alcoholic beverages.  Giving back is an important part of Carbonell’s life, he has established the Carbonell Fellowship at New York Law School, and is also involved in the Campaign Steering Committee.  Carbonell received his Ph.D from Touro University, his JD from New York Law School, and his BBA and MBA from Baruch College. Currently he is living in New Jersey with his wife Susan and daughter Audrey.

Monica Dean is the Administrative Director of the Lawrence N. Field Center for Entrepreneurship and is an adjunct lecturer in the Zicklin School of Business. Ms. Dean has over 20 years of professional business experience in the public, private and non-profit sectors. Her experience includes six years as a consultant with Booz, Allen & Hamilton and six years as a senior manager with the Initiative for a Competitive Inner City, a national not-for-profit founded in 1994 by Harvard Business School Professor Michael E. Porter. Ms. Dean holds an MBA from the University of California at Berkeley and a degree in civil engineering from Howard University. She has a number of publications and workshops to her credit, served as a panelist at several major business conferences and has spoken on urban business issues before various academic and business groups nationwide.

Lawrence N. Field’s career is highlighted by the acquisition and development of more than $1 billion worth of real estate and an unbroken string of successes for his investors. Now, after half a century as an entrepreneur, Larry is devoting an increasing amount of his time, attention and resources to his longtime involvements in philanthropy, education and civic affairs.  A decade ago he established the Lawrence N. Field Center for Entrepreneurship at Baruch College in New York, his alma mater, with a $10 million gift. Later he gave an additional $5 million to establish two chairs in entrepreneurship.  Mr. Field, his wife Eris and their family also donated $10 million to Baruch College to support the renovation and modernization of the school’s 17 Lexington Avenue building, which was renamed the Lawrence and Eris Field Building.  Field began his career shortly after graduating from Baruch College as the principal of a real estate brokerage company in New York City. In 1965 Mr. Field relocated to Los Angeles, managing property there for Harry Helmsley, Loews Corporation and others, and he soon had more than 30 commercial buildings under his management.  In 1983 Field formed NSB, a firm that develops, invests in and manages Class A commercial properties in Southern California. The company’s name derives from Larry’s catch phrase, “Not So Bad,” which is his unwavering response whenever friends ask how he and his firm are doing. He holds a Bachelor’s (B.B.A.) from Baruch College of the City of New York and a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from New York Law School. Gary S. Furst has thirty years experience leading closely held consumer product companies and has an extensive background with global markets, brand management, product innovation, manufacturing, out sourcing and retail channel strategies. Mr. Furst is the co-founder and managing partner of Generation Equity Partners, a private equity firm that specializes in the lower middle market space. Prior to founding GEI, Mr. Furst was president and CEO of Weston Nurseries, a leading New England nursery grower, retailer, wholesaler, and landscaper designer enterprise. Mr. Furst was the first outsider to run the fourth generation 80-year-old family business and led a turnaround and revitalization of the company that resulted in significantly improved cash flow and increased revenue. Previously, Mr. Furst served as CEO of Kryptonite, the preeminent global producer of portable security products. Mr. Furst has served on the board of directors and board of advisors for numerous family and consumer product business concerns. A native of Newton, Massachusetts, Mr. Furst attended Washington University in St. Louis, earned his B.A. from Clark University in Worcester Mass, and is a graduate of Harvard Business School’s Advanced Management Program.

Ray Garcia has over 20 years of experience in technology innovation and strategy within large global corporations and entrepreneurial ventures.  Ray has launched several startup ventures as well as advised over 30 Internet startups at various stages of growth. He has expertise in the research and development of complex commercial software products for delivery to international clients. Early in his career he worked as an executive in banking for Citibank, Republic National Bank (HSBC), and did consulting work for Morgan Stanley and Bank of America. His first startup venture experience was with Clearcross, a leader in international trade software which is now owned by Kewill, a publicly traded UK company. Ray also co-founded Smart Systems Technology, an early innovator in the proximity (contactless RFID) payments industry. Most recently, Ray was an Executive in Residence at MIT Media Lab, and is currently a board advisor and Executive in Residence at the Field Center for Entrepreneurship at Baruch College, City University of New York. Ray serves as a coach to aspiring entrepreneurs and has formalized this process within the BCAP.biz program to help promote international economic development through entrepreneurship. He is a graduate from the School of Engineering at City College of New York and resides in NYC.

Thomas S. Lyons, Ph.D. is the Lawrence N. Field Family Chair in Entrepreneurship and Professor of Management in the Zicklin School of Business. His research focus is on entrepreneurship, its role in community, and regional economic development. Dr. Lyons has written nine books and numerous articles, book chapters and technical reports on entrepreneurship, enterprise development, business incubation, and state and local economic development. He has had a long-time interest in regional systems for fostering entrepreneurship as an economic development strategy. He is the co-developer of such a system, the Entrepreneurial League System (ELS) ®, which has been implemented in Louisville, KY, the Advantage Valley (portions of West Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio) and in Central Louisiana. Portions of this framework have also been used in Johannesburg, South Africa. Dr. Lyons has served on the board of directors or the advisory board to an empowerment business incubation program, a microenterprise program, and a university-based technology business incubation program. He is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Rural Policy Research Institute’s Center for Rural Entrepreneurship (CRE). Lyons holds a Ph.D. in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and has worked as a practicing municipal planner and as a private planning consultant.

Cornelius Marx has been a CEO of 3 companies, each in a different industry – wine and spirits, publishing, and mail processing – spanning a 25 year period. He continues to consult for Pitney Bowes International Mail Group, his last CEO assignment.  Since 1976, he has served as Board Member, advisor and consultant to several non profit organizations in the fields of performing arts and education. He is currently a trustee of the National School Climate Center, a sub-committee chair of the Harvard Schools Committee, a member of the Admissions Committee of the Harvard Club of New York, and a member of the Harvard Business School Club of New York Community Partners Board, which does pro bono consulting for Non Profits in the tri-state area. On behalf of Community Partners, Corny is currently supervising consulting projects for the Parent’s League of NY and Let’s Get Ready, SAT Prep for minority students. As an Adjunct Professor teaches Business Policy at Baruch College.  Corny graduated from Harvard College with an AB in 1965 and earned an MBA at Harvard Business School in 1967. He is married with two children and resides in Manhattan.

Nava Michael-Tsabari is the founder and manager of the Raya Strauss Center for Family Business Research at the Tel Aviv University, the Recanati Business School. Since 2009 has served as the academic leader of the family business teaching for the executive coursesat the Tel Aviv University, at the Recanati Business School with several published academic papers and the recipient of the 2012 FFI Best Unpublished Research Paper, and AOM Best and Distinguished Reviewer Awards.

Mrs. Micahel Tsabari is a 3rd generation of the Strauss family which owns a multinational family firm in the food industry, with a yearly turnover of $2 billion. During her tenure with the Strauss Group she was the HR manager in one of the family’s factories and served on the board of directors until 2005. She also has several years of experience in starting and managing several toy companies in Israel which merged into Happening LTD in 2006.

Alvin N. Puryear is Professor Emeritus of Management and Entrepreneurship at Baruch College of the City University of New York. He is also a Management Consultant who provides services to new businesses with high-growth potential.  Until September 2007, Dr. Puryear was the Lawrence N. Field Professor of Entrepreneurship and Professor of Management at Baruch College. He taught and conducted research in the areas of business policy, human resource management, and entrepreneurial strategy. At various times he also served as a College Dean, Chairman of the Department of Management, Founding Co-Director of the Baruch College/Cornell University Master of Science in Industrial Relations Program, and Founding Director of the Lawrence N. Field Center for Entrepreneurship.  Dr. Puryear serves on the Boards of Directors of the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ Trust Company; American Capital Ltd, a buy-out and asset management firm (NASDAQ); CIBT Travel Solutions, an expeditor of documents for business and leisure travel; and American Capital Agency Corporation (NASDAQ).  Prior to joining the Baruch College faculty in January 1970, Dr. Puryear was an Associate Professor at Rutgers University’s Graduate School of Business Administration. Previously he held executive positions in human resource management and finance with the Mobil Corporation and information technology with the Allied Chemical Corporation.  Dr. Puryear received a BA degree from Yale University and MBA and PhD degrees from Columbia University where he was both a Samuel Bronfman Fellow and a John Hay Whitney Fellow.

Edward G. Rogoff, Ph.D.  is the Lawrence N. Field Professor of Entrepreneurship and the Chair of the Department of Management. An expert in the economics of regulated industries, Professor Rogoff has published extensively in the area of entrepreneurship and small business. Professor Rogoff was named 2010 Entrepreneurship Educator of the Year by the United States Association of Small Business and Entrepreneurship. In 2004, his book Bankable Business Plans was published. In 2005, The Entrepreneurial Conversation co-authored with Michael Corbett, was published. In 2009, his book, The Second Chance Revolution: Becoming Your Own Boss After 50 was published. He was an entrepreneur in the communications industry for 15 years.

Stuart Schulman, Ed.D. is the Founder and Executive Director of the Institute for Virtual Enterprise (IVE), a special initiative of the City University of New York (CUNY).  Professor Schulman also is the Executive Director of Kingsborough’s Center for Economic and Workforce Development (CEWD) that bridges the capacity building of economic development and has developed new models of courses under the auspices of the United States Department of Labor and FIPSE.   Schulman served as the founding Academic Director for Business Programs at the CUNY School of Professional Studies and supervised the development and launch of an online B.S. in Business and an online M.S. in Management and Leadership. He also was a founding team member on the “I Love New York” program and served as the director of the global AARP Travel Service, has founded several airlines, founded and Chaired the Department of Tourism and Hospitality at Kingsborough Community College, and served as the Co-Director of a satellite Ed.D program for the George Washington University.

Stephen Spinelli, Ph.D.  is currently the President of Philadelphia University and has many years of leadership experience in academia and business. At Babson College in Wellesley, Massachusetts, Dr. Spinelli chaired the entrepreneurship division, was director of the Arthur M. Blank Center for Entrepreneurship, and held the Alan Lewis Chair in Global Management. He was a dynamic member of the President’s Cabinet and the Academic Council, as well as chair of the entrepreneurship task force that contributed to the College’s strategic plan. As Vice Provost, Dr. Spinelli was instrumental in strengthening and growing important Babson initiatives, including the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), the world’s largest collaborative research project studying entrepreneurship; Successful Transgenerational Entrepreneurship Practices (STEP); the Symposium for Entrepreneurship Educators (SEE); and the Babson/Historically Black Colleges and Universities Consortium, a partnership dedicated to improving the quality, quantity, and longevity of African American business.  Previously, Dr. Spinelli was co-founder of Jiffy Lube International and Chairman and CEO of the American Oil Change Corporation, helping to pioneer the quick lube industry nationwide and turning Jiffy Lube into the nation’s dominant competitor with more than 1,000 service centers.  Dr. Spinelli received his Ph.D. in Economics from The Management School, Imperial College, University of London, his M.B.A. from Babson College, and his B.A. in Economics from McDaniel College.

Rik Willard is an experienced Entrepreneur and Digital Executive, with a record of creating innovative business platforms and delivering delivering stellar results for high-level projects in technology, media, nonprofit and luxury-sector branding. His is a rare combination of experience, management expertise and vision. Currently, Rik is Founder & CEO of MintCombine, a New York-based digital currency product lab focused on developing custom digital economies for brands and developing markets. He attended secondary school at The Governor’s Academy in Byfield, Massachusetts, and finished his undergraduate studies at Howard University. He is a noted speaker on entrepreneurship for national and international thought leaders such as the Harvard Business School, the Kaufmann Foundation, the Dow Jones Speakers Series, the National Urban League, the National Association of Minorities in Communications and the City University of New York. Rik is an Advisor and Board Member to several digital companies, and has judged business plans, entrepreneurial development programs and digital media applications for the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE), NYU/Poly and the New Media Emmy Awards. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Foreign Policy Association, a Mentor at Pace University’s Seidenberg School of Computer Science & Information Systems and a Board Member of PCI Media Impact, a global media NGO.

Ramona K. Zachary, Ph.D.  is the Academic Director of the Lawrence N. Field Center and the Jonas Chair of Entrepreneurship in the Department of Management of the Zicklin School of Business at Baruch College. Before joining Baruch College, Dr. Zachary was Professor and the J. Thomas Clark Fellow of Entrepreneurship and Personal Enterprise at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York. Dr. Zachary teaches and conducts research related to family businesses. She has published numerous articles on family management, decision making theory, and public and private policies related to working families.
