This course will take as its subject the ways in which male bodies, manhood, and masculinity have been depicted on the page and onscreen in Britain since World War II. Throughout, we will think about how the working class male body is viewed, when and how male emotion is displayed, what role the heritage industry plays in defining ‘the working class,’ and how popular culture, especially music (e.g., 60s soul, reggae, The Sex Pistols, U2, Oasis, The Clash), shapes and is shaped by artistic movements. Our goal will be to broaden our understanding of the film, literature and culture of Great Britain in the latter half of the twentieth century while we develop our close reading, analytical, and writing skills.
