NMArtspace – Plastic Project

It was quite fun having such a project on Wednesday. By doing in-class research and analysis, what I learned was not only more information about plastic but also the way how real artists usually think and observe toward all stuffs around in daily lives.

Most of us believe that plastic is bad for the environment. The government, the society, even the whole world appeal us to work hard on recycling to decrease such harm. Undeniable, it’s a great program; however, will it be even better if we could also find the potentials of plastic. There were many lines on our research form asking what this plastic item we picked could be in its next life. And I liked one of my classmates’ answer for the question “I typically discard this item via…?” He chose “gift”. Yes, why not?! Guess we barely think about what else we can do with a plastic bottle before throwing it away. Actually, there are so many ways to reuse plastic bottles and keep them out of the landfill. Pop bottles, water bottles, vinegar bottles, juice bottles, milk jugs, they can all be reused in creative ways. How about make the bars of soap last longer with a handmade plastic cap soap dish? Or grab the kiddos and turn old bottle caps into cute ladybug toys? Maybe string up multi-colored plastic caps along with other salvaged plastic to make stunning trash streamers?

Life is never a lack of beauty but a lack of the eyes to find beauty.

Through this project, I understood that a real artist never and ever just define a thing as itself or judge without sufficient research. Furthermore, the capacity of imagine is also one of the most important part in the world of art. Therefore, there’s no unified answer for “what it is?” even we’re looking at the same thing!
