Career Planning: Internship & Goal Setting

I went to this workshop in place of the Academic Enrichment one. There weren’t anymore left. Unlike the “Mediating Conflict & Resolving Disputes” workshop, this one wasn’t crowded there were only about a handful of people there. Since everybody in the room were pretty much strangers to each other, there wasn’t much of a discussion going on. There was just a long lecture. But it was still useful for me.

This one was good since I want to get internships while I’m here at Baruch. They discussed the different types of interships. There are both paid and unpaid internships as well as “credit interships”, something I’ve never heard of before. Basically, credit internships are just interships that give you college credit for compensation. You don’t necessarily get money, or pay, for them. You have to be a junior in order to do one of those though. Freshmen and sophomores can’t do credit interships unfortunately. But freshmen can do paid interships though, which is a PLUS. I like money and getting paid.

Love is Blind: Mixed Relationships Event

I attended a workshop on Thursday that was about mixed relationships.  This workshop discussed issues that arise when we are involved in relationships with people of different races and religions.  The workshop did not focus solely on relationships with a significant other.  It also dealt with other relationships such as friendships.  In this workshop, the people attending it were able to be very open instead of just listening to people speak as many of the workshops have been.  It was mainly a large discussion where people were able to air their own personal experiences with mixed relations and what kind of feedback they have received.  I am personally involved in a relationship with someone of a different religion so this workshop was helpful to me because I was able to relate to the other people there.

Arts At Baruch

I attended the Gallery Tour workshop on September 22. This tour really didn’t appeal to me too much. I really am not much of a fan of art and stuff like that. However, it was impressing to see just how talented some of these artists are.

20th Anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall

I attended this workshop on Thursday November 5. It’s purpose was to discuss the importance of the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. First, the speaker showed a documentary video about the Fall of the Berlin Wall, then several professors whom were present during the event or just a little before it, talked about the changes that happened after the fall. I attended this workshop because it was one of the last global /community awareness workshops. This workshop met my expectations because it was pretty interesting learning about the changes that occurred and how some of the changes were now being countered due to nostalgia. This workshop took me out of my comfort zone, since it was the first workshop that actually had more professors attending than students including the professor for our music class. I don’t know if I can recommend this workshop to others, since it is only offered once, but I would recommend a similar one to other students.

FRO Internship and Goal Setting

I attended this workshop on November 10, 2009 from 12:30-2:00. The workshop’s purpose is to inform students about internships, essentially what is an internship, what we should do during an internship, and how we can get one. The speaker showed a powerpoint presentation. It was pretty informative, I learned that while most companies want sophomores or juniors, there are some special programs that are directed toward freshmen. We were also given a booklet in the beginning with other information and some sample resumes. I wasn’t taken out of my comfort zone, since it was just essentially a workshop with a speaker giving us information. In the end the workshop actually exceeded my expectations with all the information I was given and I definitely recommend this workshop to others.

Managing Relationships in College

I attended the managing relationships in college workshop on October, 8 during club hour. It’s purpose was to inform students about the changes in personal relationships now that we are in college and how we should deal with them. The speaker essentially showed us a Powerpoint presentation of the different relationships, such as friendship, family, romantic, and a few others. There was a few exercises like talking to my neighbors about what would be different in family relationships now that we are in college, and having to walk around the room to meet five strangers. It was outside my comfort zone because of the little exercise in meeting five new people and having to talk to others about my relationships. But in the end, this workshop met my expectations in that it help me acquire some insight into changing relationships, and I would recommend this workshop to others.

The Nature of Landscape

I attended the Nature of Landscape for the arts at Baruch a little over a month ago on October, 6 and didn’t blog about it. Anyways, we were given a tour and the guide drew our attention to the ones that were especially interesting (like a picture with two boats and a storm approaching) and explained some of the techniques involved. It was pretty interesting, my favorite picture was Whine City, taken by Marilyn Bridges at Keye, Greece. I specifically chose this workshop because I had never attended a gallery featuring photography. It was out of my comfort zone, because I had never attended a gallery featuring photography instead of the typical paintings. This workshop met my expectations, it was pretty interesting and I would recommend it to others.
