Diversity Job & Internship Fair

On Friday I attended the job/internship fair. I was somewhat underprepared. The invite requested that people buy or rent a blue or black suit for the occasions should they not have one already. I did not buy one, not only that, but I wasn’t thinking clearly because I wore nice black slacks and a white shirt, no jacket, no tie… Anyways, luckily for me Baruch members who planned the event, planned for people like me too. Now don’t get me wrong, I have a few suits at home, but being that I didn’t have a blue or black one I figured I’d do the best I could to get the color right, instead of just wearing a different color suit. The Baruch reps had two large racks with blaizers, slacks and even suits available to try on for the occasion. After some strenuous searching, I, and the wonderful Wendy Heyman, could not find matching pieces to my ensemble. I then noticed a nice three piece suit that was multicolored with a dominant grey scheme, it looked a little big, but it was brand new and I was determined to make it work. After a little belt adjustment and a little arm maneuvering, I walked out the restroom feeling pretty good about myself, and the suit. I was greeted enthusiastically by the Baruch representatives and was wished a happy hunting in the gym futher down the hall. I thanked them sincerely and walked through the golden doors of opportunity…

After my first interview with the Price Waterhouse Coopers’ representative, I knew what kind of ball game I was in; these corporations were predominately looking for Juniors graduating in June. I did not let that discourage me. I went around and introduced myself to five more corporate representatives. My conversations were informative and I learned some of the operations of the corporate offices of which I inquired. My initiative dialogue was well met by the reps being that I began by acknowledging my age and year and my goal of getting a head start by expressing interest in gathering as much information as I could about a business and to become a memorable character in everyone that I spoke to. It was a job well done.
