Club Fair

The club fair in particular was increidibly interesting.  I was amazed at the vast array of clubs offered at Baruch.  The representatives from many of the clubs were very personable, and some free food was given out.  Overall, a great experience.

Workshop# 6

This volunteer event was the Junior Acheivement awards. I and my Sigma members came to gether with the J.A. association to teaach 6th grade urban students entreuprenurial skills. We spent most of the day doing fun activities with the students that taught them the core values of a good business. Some of the children were pretty smart while others appeared to have been left back a few years. It was a fun event that helped inspire underprivilaged kids in the bronx.

Workshop # 5

This event was the volunteer sports auction. It was run by the starlight foundation in madison square garden. At the event me and my sigma members helped run the large event by auctioning off some of the sports memorabilia in the silent auction. It was for a good cause that helped needy children. Afunny thing that happened was a scuffle between a 35 year old man and a 20 year old girl over gettin g the last signature on a spa treatment worth 500 dollars.

Student Services

The Student Services workshop was one of the most helpful of all the workshops I went to.  There were several tables/stations set up to help inform attendees of the different services offered to students at Baruch.  I received some rather helpful information regarding financial aid, tutoring, and even the study abroad program.   I learned that I could go to the tutoring center to receive free help with any school work I’m having trouble with.  The study abroad program seems pretty cool.  I would love to travel the world through my studies.  The representatives at each table were really nice, had a lot of information on the topic, and were able to answer all of my questions.

Workshop # 4

This event was the follow up to the baily house halloween preparation event. In this event we came back a few days later and watched over the party, served drinks food, and helped run games. This event was meant to help children with hiv positive parents have a happy halloween. During the event I came in a ninja costume.

Workshop #3

This event I attended was the oxford debate held on the 14th floor by Sigma alpha delta. This debate was on the issue of gay marraige vs traditional marraige. During the event 3 panelist from both sides of the floor spoke for and agianst the oppossing side. The lively debate was followed up by a question and answer seccion. The event ended with a secret ballot that found 75% of the audience in favor of gay marraige. It was an interesting event that was quite informative.

Gallery Tour

Similar to the Freshman Reception, the Gallery Tour had a super long line.  Thus, there was an annoyingly long wait to get in.  I thought it was cool how the art was arranged to show the progression throughout the artist’s life.  However, the art itself did not really interest me.  I’m not a big art person, so I guess I can’t really judge but based on my personal preferences – the art could have been better.

Global Awareness

At this event on December 24th me and my sigma alphs delta members helped put together the decorations for the bailies house halloween party event. It took about 3 hours but it was deffinetly worth it. The members in my group were very helpful and we worked together well. I hope to do this event again soon.

Club Fair

The Club Fair was pretty well organized.  The representatives from each club were really friendly and super approachable.  However, there were a lot of students in attendance, making it somewhat chaotic.  There was some sort of dance off or something.  That was cool, but I couldn’t really enjoy it because there were sooooo many people crowded around the dancers.  I was surprised at how many clubs there actually are at Baruch and how diverse they are.

Career Planning/Verizon Presentation

The Verizon Career Planning workshop/presentation was pretty interesting.  When I got there we had to sign in on computers, so I didn’t get a signature.  The speakers taught us about “Elevator Speeches”.  An elevator speech lasts about one minute and is helpful when it comes to introducing yourself to a potential employer.  He explained that it’s good to include what college you went to because it can help you to network with other alumni.  They talked about how it’s important to present yourself in a professional matter and the importance of a resume, like we learned in class.  This was definitely a helpful workshop because it was useful and gave explanations of how the techniques could be applicable in everyone’s own lives.
