Personal Enrichment

At this workshop i learned all about internships. I learned where i could receive an internship and how long until i should try to get one. This workshop really interested me because i plan on getting an internship during my time at Baruch.i think an internship is a great way to learn a specific business.

Career Planning

I enjoyed the Career Planning workshop. i had a lot of fun and i learned a couple of new things. Something that i think will be very helpful is that I learned to socialize to create better networking for myself. This is a great skill to have as we get older because if you network the right way you can open up business opportunities.

Gallery Tour

When i attended the Gallery Tour i did not have a good experience. The line to get into the tour was very long and frustrating. There were many paintings to look at. Personally I had no interest in this topic.

Mercedes Matter Gallery Tour

Today I was shown a glimpse into the life of Mercedes; an artist who died in 2001. She was born in 1913 and the gallery showed her art as she matured. The first piece of art shown was created when she was 9 years old. Slowly but surely, she progressed into her adolescent years, womanhood and to a ripe old age of 88 years old. I was shown many abstract pictures which is how she expressed her art once she reached her young adult phase. The abstract art grew even more abstract as her years progressed; her image of life and people grew distorted as she unravelled the preeminent images of life.

Gallery Tour: Mercedes Matter

On November 17, 2009 I attended the Mercedes Matter Gallery Tour at the 22nd street Baruch building.  The line to get in was pretty long.  The art did not personally appeal to me though I will admit waiting in the long line put me in such a groggy mood I was not enthusiastic about the gallery.  The tour guide gave us some information about the artist, none of which I can recall except that during the artist’s time period people began to paint abstractly since the invention of the camera made painting portraits less necessary.

Diversity Job & Internship Fair

On Friday I attended the job/internship fair. I was somewhat underprepared. The invite requested that people buy or rent a blue or black suit for the occasions should they not have one already. I did not buy one, not only that, but I wasn’t thinking clearly because I wore nice black slacks and a white shirt, no jacket, no tie… Anyways, luckily for me Baruch members who planned the event, planned for people like me too. Now don’t get me wrong, I have a few suits at home, but being that I didn’t have a blue or black one I figured I’d do the best I could to get the color right, instead of just wearing a different color suit. The Baruch reps had two large racks with blaizers, slacks and even suits available to try on for the occasion. After some strenuous searching, I, and the wonderful Wendy Heyman, could not find matching pieces to my ensemble. I then noticed a nice three piece suit that was multicolored with a dominant grey scheme, it looked a little big, but it was brand new and I was determined to make it work. After a little belt adjustment and a little arm maneuvering, I walked out the restroom feeling pretty good about myself, and the suit. I was greeted enthusiastically by the Baruch representatives and was wished a happy hunting in the gym futher down the hall. I thanked them sincerely and walked through the golden doors of opportunity…

After my first interview with the Price Waterhouse Coopers’ representative, I knew what kind of ball game I was in; these corporations were predominately looking for Juniors graduating in June. I did not let that discourage me. I went around and introduced myself to five more corporate representatives. My conversations were informative and I learned some of the operations of the corporate offices of which I inquired. My initiative dialogue was well met by the reps being that I began by acknowledging my age and year and my goal of getting a head start by expressing interest in gathering as much information as I could about a business and to become a memorable character in everyone that I spoke to. It was a job well done.

Class Scheduling Experience

This by far was the most informative day in Freshman Seminar for me. I liked that the representative who joined our class knew the information she was providing us front and back. She was a little repetitive but I’m sure it was for the best and was just her method of reiterating and stressing particular points. I was {and still am} looking forward to rewatching LUCY with the intent of screating a new schedule for the upcoming semesters. I wish I had asked the representative about any policies regarding classes taken during the Winter Semester, specifically the upcoming one yet I am not daunted about this past opportunity; I look forward to finding the represented office and further inquiring there.

Drivers & Networking with Andrea Neirenberg

This regards a meeting I attended in one of the Weissman Center for International Business rooms on the 8th Floor. I well content with the informatin and advice I recieved this night. This successful woman came in to explain the convenience of networking, what it is, and how to use your resources to further advance something that you are trying to do. I enjoyed listening to Mrs. Neirenberg’s presentation as well as the way she interacted with her audience. I also gained insight into other members of the audience’s minds when they contributed to the presentation with more discussion, thus establishing a more interactive experience. Personally, I wasn’t all that ‘enlightened’ as some of the others in the audience because I have attended seminars in which topics like this were discussed. What she was saying I noted, was information that I had already acquired yet I welcomed the reminder anyway. I also wish that she had been able to stay with us longer and get to know us more to further enhance the experience of networking; she may have need of one of us in the future of her career and we may have need of the experience that she has in order to make a well educated decision regarding something we may be unfamiliar with in our futures.

Resume Assistance from Weissman

I went to Weissman Center for International Business and recieved help from the beautiful representatives with my resume. They were very thorough and precise with the information that they provided to me. I enjoyed learning with them and am glad that I was able to produce a more professional resume. The only problem that we encountered wa that the computer systems available to them in the office only registered Microsoft 2003 and its predecessors and my completed document was in Microsoft 2009 format. However this setback was easily overcome by me recreating the document and saving it in an older format version of Microsoft. Again I am very thankful for their assistance. Now when we are talking about resumes in Freshamn Seminar, I exult internally because I know that I am one step ahead.

Fall Student Services Fair of 2009

I attended this workshop along with many other freshmen. I appreciated that the school assembled one of these with the intent that we could gain information regarding something that we were intirested in. The top four departments I became more aquainted with are The Study Abroad/WCIB, STARR, Financial Aid as well as the Athletics. I do thank them for their assistance. The room which this event was held was too small and uncomfortable to be in whilst the students were bustling around with their friends, blocking paths and being unattentive of their surroundings. I also believe that it would have been a more highly interactive experience if there were multiple representatives for each station; with students crowded around a table, flashing their cards, the representative was grabbing cards left and right, stamping and stamping away, as well as trying to answer the questions of those actually interested in the particular topic they were well educated in.
