Global Awareness

Today, November 12th, I attended a Global Awareness workshop in room VC 2-125.  The workshop was from 12:30 – 1:30.  Alfonso Quiroz spoke about being openly gay and having political power.  This workshop focused on bringing diversity to the political arena.  Alfonso told us about his experiences being a gay biracial man in this world.  He spoke about interning at the White House when he was in  college under the Clinton administration.  He was able to go to all of the fancy dinners and dances.  Mr. Quiroz also spoke of working for Al Gore when he was running for President against George Bush.  He even worked for MTVNews and was able to go to the VMAs.  I was amazed at how much he accomplished in such a short time.  Alfonso recently ran for city counsil but lost.  He is now the spokesman for Con Edison.  Clearly Mr. Quiroz is a very successful person and it is inspiring how he overcame all the obsticles and negativity he had to deal with being a homosexual biracial male.  I enjoyed this workshop because I learned that there are other people who have a difficult life and can accomplish great things.
