Academic Enrichment Workshop

Today, I attended an academic enrichment workshop named Freshmen Reception at 12:30 p.m in room 215 on the 5th floor in the vc building. The workshop was meant for us to meet our advisors and to discuss what our future plans may be. We were going to be informed about what courses we can register for in the spring of 2010 and what minors or majors are offfered at Baruch. We were also going to discuss if we could drop a course during the fall semester. However this did not happen. There were a lot more students than expected at the workshop. According to an advisor, they were waiting to see about 200 students like in the past years, but there were about more than a thousand students attending.

There was a huge line outside of the room and inside the room. There were so many people that it did not even look like a line. In other words, it was a huge crowd of people waiting to get their planner signed to say that they attended the workshop. People were entering the room from two different entrances and then went into different rooms within room 215 to find an advisor to sign their book. There was barely space to pass and it felt like a mission to get out of there. This did give people the opportunity to meet others though, so it was not that bad. The advisors did apologize for the inconvenience and we were able to leave after getting our book signed.

I chose this workshop because I want to know what majors are offered at Baruch and to hopefully get a clue about which one to choose. I was not satisfied by this workshop because nothing was done to help me get a better understanding of what Baruch offers. I would recommend students to speak to their advisors but not to go to a workshop with so many students at the same time. I was surprised that the workshop was done in that room instead of an auditorium. Next time there should be more order.
