Freshman Reception 2009

1. Freshman Reception 2009

2. Student Life (it says on this site. people keep saying it is for academic enrichment -_-)

3. Thursday Sept. 17 12:30-2PM

4. The workshop was supposed to be till 2 but thankfully it ended very early. The workshop was an introduction to the Academic Advisement center on the 5th floor in the VC building. The goal was to inform students that this resource was available and there are a group of people to come talk to if they need any help planning their future schedules or deciding a major/minor.

5. On Sept. 17, there were many workshops available but I selected this one. I chose the Freshman Reception because it seemed to me that valuable information would be presented. I was interested in finding out the functions of the Advisement center.

6. This workshop did not really meet my expectations because they said “refreshments will be served” but all the students did not receive refreshments. If they wanted only a limited amount of students, they should not have sent a postcard to our homes advertising the workshop. The staff of the center were nice though and it’s worth learning how they can help students in a variety of ways.

7. I learned where the advisement center was and where I can get forms for declaring a major or a minor. The workshop was not exceptionally interesting though and there’s not that much more I can say about it. Overall, it was an OK experience.

Community/Global Awareness Worshop

Today I attended a community/global awareness workshop entitled Changing America: Judge Sonia Sotomayor. The workshop first focused on the success of Sotomayor. For instance, she is the first Latina woman and the third woman in history ever to be on the Supreme Court. She grew up in the Bronx and attended Princeton as an undergraduate student. She later went on to attend Yale. In connection with all of her achievements, we discussed how success stories, such as Sotomayor’s, are the type of quintessential American stories that are attractive to an American audience. The fact that she is now on the Supreme Court has even lead some to focus on whether she maintains her femininity or if she has adopted masculine qualities because of her new status as Judge Sotomayer. Here’s what I learned: Because she is modest about her success and because she is very sweet when she’s not on the Supreme Court bench, many perceive that to be evidence of her femininity. But when she is on the bench, she obviously becomes tough and aggressive. Aggressiveness is often associated with masculinity. This goes to show that the varying gender roles of women in society have become a hot topic among many.

After discussing Sotomayor’s success, we delved into an even broader aspect of changes in America. For example, many people would assume that because a Latina is now on the Supreme Court and because we now have a black president, this might suggest that issues of racism have been resolved. However, I learned that this is totally not the case. In issues related to wages, education, and health, it turns out that apparently, Latinos, African Americans, as well as other minorities, are not faring any better than they did before the civil rights movement. To some extent, I already knew this was true, but I learned some more disturbing facts. For instance, Mexicans have currently replaced African Americans as the super-exploited racialized race in America. I also learned that 2,000,000 people were incarcerated in 2009. And apparently, mass incarceration began after the civil rights movement.

It’s a little sad to see that so many people have been mislead into thinking that America is moving in this upward direction, where everyone is treated with equal respect, when the reality is that it’s not. I learned that the reason why America is not progressing in a positive direction is because the civil rights movement failed to address economic inequality. I think this workshop was very interesting because it not only served as a means to discuss the importance of Sonia Sotomayor’s achievement, but also it was resourceful in conveying the dark side of America.

Academic Enrichment Workshop

Today, I attended an academic enrichment workshop named Freshmen Reception at 12:30 p.m in room 215 on the 5th floor in the vc building. The workshop was meant for us to meet our advisors and to discuss what our future plans may be. We were going to be informed about what courses we can register for in the spring of 2010 and what minors or majors are offfered at Baruch. We were also going to discuss if we could drop a course during the fall semester. However this did not happen. There were a lot more students than expected at the workshop. According to an advisor, they were waiting to see about 200 students like in the past years, but there were about more than a thousand students attending.

There was a huge line outside of the room and inside the room. There were so many people that it did not even look like a line. In other words, it was a huge crowd of people waiting to get their planner signed to say that they attended the workshop. People were entering the room from two different entrances and then went into different rooms within room 215 to find an advisor to sign their book. There was barely space to pass and it felt like a mission to get out of there. This did give people the opportunity to meet others though, so it was not that bad. The advisors did apologize for the inconvenience and we were able to leave after getting our book signed.

I chose this workshop because I want to know what majors are offered at Baruch and to hopefully get a clue about which one to choose. I was not satisfied by this workshop because nothing was done to help me get a better understanding of what Baruch offers. I would recommend students to speak to their advisors but not to go to a workshop with so many students at the same time. I was surprised that the workshop was done in that room instead of an auditorium. Next time there should be more order.

Welcome AKM5A!

Welcome to OUR blog,

It has been great getting to know all of you these last couple of weeks. As all of you know, we will not be meeting this following Friday, since there are no classes scheduled under the Baruch calendar. The same applies as well if any of you is taking a class over the weekend, no classes are scheduled Saturday or Sunday. So please make sure that you take advantage of this time.

Please let the group know that you would be attending a workshop by posting it here, so most of you can know who is attending what workshop. Maybe some of you could get together to attend. Remember that you need to fullfill all 6 categories of the enrichment workshops. Do not leave them for last minute since it would not serve as a excuse. Use your time properly now that you have the time. And dont forget to blog about it afterwards!

Have a great week,

Paola Feliz
