Personal Enrichment Workshop
Student Life
1. Freshman Reception 2009
2. Student Life (it says on this site. people keep saying it is for academic enrichment -_-)
3. Thursday Sept. 17 12:30-2PM
4. This workshop’s goal was to inform students about the resources available at the Academic advisement center. The center provides help with making schedules and choosing majors.
5. This workshop was also convenient because of the time and that‘s why I chose it. It didn’t take me out of a comfort zone it just allowed me to find out useful information that I would need in the future.
6. I didn’t have a lot of expectations considering it was a freshmen reception. I thought they were just going to give us basic information and they did. It wasn’t the most exciting workshop but I learned how the staff center can help me out.
7.I basically learned where the Academic advisement center was and what it offered. There was nothing really surprising about this workshop.
Arts at Baruch
1. Gallery Tour: The Nature of Landscape & Photography
2. Arts at Baruch
3. Tuesday Oct. 6 1-2PM
4. At this workshop we looked at a lot of paintings and pictures. It was a very short workshop at the Mishkin gallery. I guess the point was to see the art available for us to visit.
5.I chose this workshop because other people from my block were going so I went to get it out of the way. It didn’t take me out of my comfort zone because we just looked at pictures for 20 minutes.
6. I didn’t have high expectations for this workshop because I’m not a real big art fan. I really wanted to go and get it out of the way. I would recommend this workshop because it was very short and straight forward.
7. I learned that Baruch has a nice gallery available to those who are interested in art. I didn’t know Baruch had a gallery so I was a little surprised and it showed that there are things available to people with all different kinds of interests.
Academic Enrichment
1. SACC: Everything You Need To Know
2. Academic Enrichment
3. Thursday October 15 12:30-1:30PM
4. The main goal of this workshop was to inform students on how o be successful math students. They gave us tips and strategies on how to do this and they also gave us info on the SACC center which is a center where math tutoring is available.
5.I selected this workshop simply because it was right after school so it was easy for me to attend. I wouldn’t call math a comfort zone so I guess it was successful in that aspect.
6.I didn’t realize that the workshop was going to be so specific on helping us out with math and I didn’t know how much math help was available at the SACC center. This is definitely a good workshop for new students and I would recommend it because I also had some trouble with math.
7. I was able to understand how important good studying habits for math are. Its one of those things you have to dedicate a lot of time to.
Basic Interviewing Techniques
1. Basic Interviewing Techniques
2. Career Exploration
3. Thurs. Oct 29 12:30-1:30PM
4. The goals of the workshop where pretty self explanatory. They spoke to us about proper interviewing techniques and things that we shouldn’t do when we attend an interview in the future. They also brought up the STARR career center and how they can help us out.
5. I basically chose this workshop because it sounded interesting and the time was convenient. The interviewing techniques weren’t that new to me but I learned about the STARR center which is probably something I might use in the future.
6. It met my expectations because the title was self explanatory so I did learn a lot about interviewing techniques. I also found the information on the STARR center very useful. It was a pretty good workshop so I would probably recommend it to another student.
7. The most important thing I learned from this workshop was everything the STARR center provides. I look forward to using the STARR center in the future when I need help with my resumes, internships and tests to help me choose a major.
Resume Writing
On November 17th I attended “Resume Writing” at 12:30 in room 3-215. This workshop was supposed to be a PowerPoint presentation, however the system had apparently shut down so instead the monitor basically answered questions. She reviewed the different parts of a resume in order and described what should be in each section. For instance I learned that bullet points are supposed to be used rather than complete sentences when talking about your previous experience. She then went on to describe how the Starr Career Development Center has job listing where you can post you resume for recruiters to see. The Job Fairs are also a great resource, because the recruiters themselves can get a chance to talk one on one with you. Another interesting Fact I learned was that a Thank You letter is a must, because this shows you care enough to follow up on what you peruse.
Career Exploration
The workshop that I went to was How to Write a Resume. I got some very helpful tips when putting together a resume for a job. They told us that we should forget all activities we did in high school and put activities that pertain to college. Also they said you should put your GPA on your resume only if it is over a 3.0. They show us how to format a resume, even though the projector was broken. They also say to put down our major or what is going to be our major. They told us it very difficult for people looking for a job for the first time. They said that anything that could help our chances to landing the job that we should. Overall it was very good workshop. I must say I was relieved after the workshop was over since I am now all done with these workshops. Must say I did learn a few things in the process.
Personal Enrichment
For personal enrichment, I went to a workshop called managing relationships in college. College is the time where many kids grow to become responsible adults, but before that happens, parents need to learn that their kid is grown up. The workshop explained to us that independence is very important at this time, however don’t completely ignore your parents. Now is the time to show that your an adult and can handle your own business. Your parents have been there for you, and now is the time to give back. Making new friends is also very important. By expanding your network, finding jobs becomes easier. College is known to be the best time to make close friends, friends that will be there for you your whole life. This workshop helped me to learn that I shouldn’t distance myself from my parents, but become closer to them.
Academic Enrichment
For academic enrichment, I went to the freshman reception at the beginning of the school year. More people came then the advisers anticipated, as the this years freshman class was one of the largest. It took some time for them to sort out all the kids and get everything in order. After things settled, the advisers introduced themselves, and began explaining what they could do to help us. They talked alot about the adviser’s office located on the fifth floor of the VC. If we ever need help, we should go there to seek it. It shows that you’re not alone in Baruch, and there are people who can help you. Use the resources you have wisely, and your college experience will be fun and enriching.
Community Global Awareness
For Community global awareness, I went to see a movie concerning teen drug abuse and unsafe sex practices. It was on a Friday, and the movie was pretty late, as I only have one class on Friday. When the time came to start the movie, it didn’t start. To my disappointment, I thought I had waited there for no reason. The person in charge was nice enough to give us a credit for still showing up though. However my curiosity made me go home and find the movie on the ever so great interweb. I downloaded it, sat down, and thought I was in for a very boring video. How wrong I was. The movie was quite graphic, which showed me the difference between a high school movie regarding drugs and sex compared to a college one. In this one, you actually see the horrors on intoxication. Young boys take advantage of girls who are drunk, going as far as to raping them. Although my eyes were already open to the problems with drugs and alcohol, this video opened it wider. It made me see that the things adult tells us are true, and that overdosing on alcohol and drugs is not cool.
