Career Exploration

For career exploration, I went to a workshop for basic interviewing skills. This workshop actually helped me a lot. My interviewing skills are horrible, as I hate formal wear and my serious tone is quite well….not serious. This workshop helped me tweek on how I should act in an interview. First and foremost, wear formal wear, but don’t be too flashy about it. Research about the job your going for. You want to show the person you care, and that you made the effort to know what the job is about. Maintain eye contact and be confident, and most importantly, SELL YOURSELF. You want to make them know what your about, and that you’ll get the job done above and beyond. Make sure they end the interview, not you. Basically, confidence is the key. I really enjoyed this workshop, and plan on attending more like it.

Student Life

For student life, I attended the Club Fair. I never joined a club before, so I was quite excited. Baruch is known as one of those colleges with the largest amount of clubs, over 100 or so, in meaning there is a club for everyone out there. When i went there, I learned that this was not a lie, and that there were many different clubs. Many of them were fraternity and sororities, but I wasn’t really interested in them. Only about three clubs stuck was to my liking, mainly archery and anime. The bow in archery really intrigued me, as it was quite large and dangerous looking. Im a fan of video games, and the anime club did just that , play video games. In the end, I decided to join both. I haven’t really attended much as of yet because I am still not use to all this reading, but once I’ve settled down, I plan on going.

Arts at Baruch

For arts at Baruch, I went to a gallery tour in the Mishkin Building. The line was very long, as it was the last tour being held. It took me about 30 minutes or so to get inside. When I did get in, the tour guide began explaining about what the pictures were about. Most of the things on display were photographs that were donated to the school. They were of simple things, like a child playing with a horse, and four crows sitting on a fence. They were well taken photos. I myself am not very interested in the arts, but one picture in particular stood out to me. It was of four bodies lying on the floor naked, to make the image of a desert. This surprised me, as I have never seen that kind of visual effect before. The tour was well done, although I must say the guide was quite monotone.

Mishkin Gallery

In order to fulfill the Arts at Baruch requirement, I attended a  tour at the Sidney Mishkin Gallery located at 135 and 22nd st. At first, since there was such a huge line of students, we had to wait for almost an hour to get in. Once we got in, the tour was very quick. In order to get everybody in and out quickly, we were spit up into small groups and were brought on seperate tours. Although it was hard to see and actually observe anything peacefully, I didnt get much out of this workshop. All I realy found out, as the tour guide told us, is that all of the paintings and pictures were donated to Baruch College buy photographers and other wealthy people. Overall, I wasn’t able to enjoy this workshop, so I might go back on my own time.

Building Resumes

This workshop I actually found pretty helpful, as I wish for my resume to be top-notch when I apply for jobs. Basically, this workshop focused on how to create an effective resume to increase your chances of an employer hiring you. I attended this workshop because the fact is, one’s resume is always changing because one is always developing new skills and gaining new experience that might be worth noting. So the speaker is telling us what should be inserted in a resume when you’re building one. You want all your working experiences, so people actually know you’ve done some kind of labor. Also, you want to leave out redundant information and only keep the gist of things you did. As for skills, you want to put the skills that most places would get the most use out of, such as language and computer skills. Also put what you’re good at, because that can determine what position you might receive in a job. So there are alot of factors involved in building a resume. The speaker also was saying that update your resume from time to time. The speaker also told us somethings that shouldn’t be put, such as personal things or things that might come off as a joke, because in a professional environment you have to be serious. I liked this workshop because it expanded my knowledge on resumes, and made me more better and deciding what to put in my resume.

SACC: Everything You Need to Know

This Academic Enrichment workshop’s primary focus was to inform you on the importance of math classes at Baruch. I decided to attend this workshop becaue I know the importance of passing math class in your freshman year at Baruch. And so, I wanted to specifically know what I need to do to pass math.  Basically, what you have to do is study and do well in the exams. The passing of your math classes are crucial, because of the fact that the starting math class branches out to the other classes you wish to take. Basically, math class is a prerequisite for most classes you need to take. Its no surprise that this is true because Baruch is indeed a business school. The speaker for this workshop also informs us on how to sign up for tutoring if you need assistance in math. The speaker made a big deal about passing math, which shows how important it is. You need it for everything in Baruch. Well, that’s a little exaggerated, but for the most part its true. I thought this workshop was very informative. Although math happens to be one of the subjects I excel at, it shouldnt so much of a problem for me to pass my math classes. But you never know down the road.

Film Series- My Beautiful Laundrette

This workship also brought up many issues and it was also a waste of time. In the end, we didnt even get to view the movie.  Apparently, the moderators didnt know how to hook the projector up to the computer to watch the film. I was thinking ” how hard can it be?” Other than that, this workshop was a failure at what it was trying to do, even though they still signed our books because of the effort and time we took to do this workshop that never launched, so it wasn’t totally a waste of time. Since I hate my time being wasted, I went home and did some research on the movie we were supposed to watch, My Beautiful Laundrette. When I started reading on the movie, I slowly realized why they made this movie for us to watch to raise global and community awareness. I found some bits and pieces of scenes from the movie, but I had no luck finding the whole thing. Anyway, the film is about the son of  Pakistani journalist who lives in London, but dreads it because of its politics. Then the son goes on to open up a laundrette, which becomes very successful and prosperous. However, the character is constantly getting foiled by racism and extremist white people. This is showing the hardships of living in a community thats racist towards minorities. The movie also raises awareness not only in race and culture, but also in sexuality. In the movie, there’s a hint of homosexuality of the protagonist and his friend. And this shows that it doesnt matter what you are or who you are, because we are all human and should be treated the same. I wish I could’ve seen the whole movie, as i know it would be a different experience and understanding rather than just reading about it.

Film Series-Kids

I think this workshop was one of the worse ever planned but the most important, because its for one’s personal enrichment.  As I was waiting in the lecture hall of 5-150, I was pondering my thoughts on what the movie was going to be about. I’ve heard some things about the movie, but I wasn’t sure. The movie was supposed to start at 2:50. It never did. I was waiting there until 4:00 like a fool. Apparently, the workshop was cancelled, with no notification to us that it was. Someone checked online and found out it was cancelled.  Thank goodness someone checked because I would’ve been waiting there for a very long time. This angered me greatly because they could’ve at least had a sign on the doors saying it was cancelled. I thought it was unfair that they left us like that. Not everyone checks the computer or has access to it 24/7, so why only do things the technology way? But as I went home frustrated, I decided to watch the movie myself. So i found the movie, and started to watch it. The movies had some graphic scenes, but it was to portray a certain point. The movie Kids is about a group of sexually active teenagers in New York City who has no morals or rational thinking about drugs and sex. The movie also takes place during the mid 90s, when HIV was most active. I did more research on this movie and it was found to be very controversial when it was released, because of the situations the movie shows. However, this is a very good movie for anyone to see, because it makes us more aware of things and influences that are out there. Even though we should know about all this stuff, it doesnt hurt to be reminded.

Arts At Baruch

I attended the Mishkin Gallery tour for this specific workshop.  This workshop was actually the least hectic out of all of them, which i liked a lot, because it moved along nicely. I went with a group of classmates, which made the experience more enjoyable. My first expectations of the gallery was that i thought it was going to be something huge and grand, but i when i entered the room, it was short and sweet. I saw a lot of nice photos, all which tell  different stories and exude different perspectives. The main photo that stood out to me the most was a sepia tone photo of what apperaed to be dunes in a desert. But if you look really close at the photo again, its actually four people lying down naked with their postier showing. What really caught me off guard was the fact that out of the four people that were int the photo, two of them were guys. And I find it amazing how the human mind perceives things a certain way unless you look at it again. But it was a very creative photo. There were also some other photos that were taken from a helicopter, which lead to some really nice black-and-white landscape photos. And the tour guide was explaining how each picture was taken and the overall meaning of most of them is shown. I thought this workshop was the best out of all the ones I attended.

Career Exploration

On Thursday, October 29th I attended the Basic Interviews Techniques workshop in room 1-107. The instructor told us about all the opportunities we had to prepare for job/intern interviews. She mentioned that they had people to help you out with your resume and even have taped mock interviews. We also had the opportunity to interview other freshman at the workshop. She explained what males and females should/should not wear to an interview. The instructor also demonstrated the proper way to shake someone’s hand. I didn’t find any of these tips helpful only because I was lucky enough to learn them in high school. Had I not known these tips prior to the workshop, it would be very informative. I would most definitely recommend it to those who have not been informed in proper etiquette at an interview.
