Academic Enrichment

On Thursday, October 15th I attended the SAAC: Everything you need to know workshop in room 3-125. The workshop was on how SAAC worked. Its main focus was on how to succeed in math. Math tutoring is one of the most popular subjects at SAAC and the instructor told us how to sign up. I thought that this was a workshop on how SAAC benefited all subjects but it focused on math. Math is one of my stronger subjects so I didn’t find the information helpful at this point but you never know about the future I guess. I assume that you follow the same procedure for other subjects, I’m sure I’ll be using the SAAC in future, especially since I’m on an a varsity team.

Personal Enrichment Workshop

On Thursday, October 8th I attended the Managing Relationships in College workshop in room 3-215. In the beginning of the workshop the instructor made us introduce ourselves to three people near us. She then made us do the same thing to three people on the opposite side of the room. She also called on a few people to share what they learned about the people around them. The instructor then spoke about how to manage relationships with family, friends (new and old), and boyfriends or girlfriends. I thought this workshop was very helpful because it taught me how to effectively communicate with others when dealing with problems. It also taught me a few lessons on time management which I’ve always had a problem with. The instructor also spoke about the transition from high school to college and how we can manage our new responsibilities. I thought this was a good workshop and I would recommend it to others.

Arts at Baruch

On Tuesday, October 6th I attended a Gallery Tour of the Mishkin Gallery. The Gallery was not in the Vertical Campus, it was on 22nd Street. Once again there were a lot of people at this workshop so the tour guide broke us up into groups. When our group was called we were told to hang out coats and bags up which was nice. The tour guide mentioned who donated most of the paintings and photographs. She also described the method used by the artist in each of the pieces of artwork. The most interesting piece of art was the photograph that looked like a bunch of hills at first. But when you look closer you realized it is four naked bodies laying next to each other, face down. The tour guide said that she always thought it was four females until someone pointed out that there were two males in the photo, due to the hairy legs. The gallery was smaller than I thought it was going to be but there were a lot of intriguing paintings and photographs. It’s nice to see that we have beautiful gallery that is open to all the students to enjoy.

Student Life

On Thursday, September 17th I attended the Freshman Reception 2009 workshop. Before even entering the workshop I knew it was going to be chaotic. There was a huge group of people standing outside the Center for Academic Advisement. Since there were a lot of people at the workshop I didn’t get the opportunity to speak with one of the advisors. They handed out folders with a few pieces of paper in them that had some information about the workshop. The advisor quickly went over each sheet. She mentioned that they were not prepared for this amount of people so that explains why she tried to go over the material quickly. I didn’t feel this was a well organized workshop because it was very dysfunctional. While I was happy to get out of there I didn’t feel that I left the workshop with more knowledge about Baruch.

Club Fair

On September 24th  I attended the “Club Fair” with a group of friends from my block.  There were lots of clubs that were promoting themselves with all different sorts of  t-shirts and handouts such as the stock market and television production club(I believe that’s what it was called they make movies around campus), but there was one that definitely caught my eye.  It was probably the most notable name  I can remember out of all of the clubs and it was, “Vagina Warriors”.  It was difficult to find out what it was about because there were so many people at the stand but I heard someone mention that it was about how women are at higher risks of getting diseases and that they must protect themselves because not many women actually know much about the topic of transmission and symptoms of a diseases.  I honestly think that that was some good eye catching advertisement for the group.  There were also many business related clubs such as management; computer science and even clubs for art and drawing enthusiasts.  I also believe seeing sororities there trying to gain new members.

Arts at Baruch

On October 13th, I attended “The Gallery  Tour” at the Mishkin Center at approximately 1:30.  This was probably the most attended workshop I have gone to.  They’re were huge lines to wait in and then they basically split everyone into groups and gave a very quick, rushed walk through of the gallery.  The paintings were what I would call typical gallery photos because there were many of the “typical” fruit bowls and those abstract lines and boxes of colors.  They did have a rather large amount of works thought that I must admit.  There were also some odd photo pieces with nude shots altered to make them look like landscapes and other scenes.  There was a painter that the guide held in high regard by the name of Matter or Mattair that is supposedly a very famous and  we were basically given a summary or her reasons for painting what she did.  The collection itself is extensive and i would definately recommend students to visit the gallery, partially since the pieces date back to the early 1900’s.

Managing Relationships In College

On October 8th, I attended  “Managing Relationships in College” at  12:45, and this workshop was basically about how to either continue previously formed relationship or create new relationships in college.  They told us that the best way to keep relationships going is by being open to others.  They then gave us a bunch of other tips like there isn’t just one type of relationship but many, such as relationships at home, with friends, and among co-workers.  They then had us break up into groups and move around  and talk to each other and basically we just got acquainted with each other.  Then they told us something that struck me, basically it was that no relationships should  completely mask another relationship.  I guess what they meant is not to let yourself be overwhelmed by forming to many relationships because it will be hard to maintain all of them.

Global Community Awareness

On October 16th, I attended the movie, “My Beautiful Launderettes”, at 3pm, however it was never actually shown.  The assigned professor didn’t show up to the room to power up the projector to play the movie.  After waiting about 20 minutes someone went up on stage and basically told the crowd that they didn’t know how to turn the projector on and therefore couldn’t play the movie.  This meant we wouldn’t receive any credit for attending.  Since this was one of the last available Global Community workshops available, everyone got really upset and we started arguing that it wasn’t fair that most of us had to wait upwards of  2 or 3 hours just to be told that we won’t get credit because the administration didn’t feel like showing up.  So after some time the monitors finally came around and decided that we were right and signed our books (my sheet).  I don’t really think I learned too much from this experience other than there are still problems that can happen in an organized event, but eventually they will be solved in a mutually beneficial manner.

Academic Enrichment

On  November 11th, I attended “Play the Basics” at 2:30 in the Academic Advisement Office on the 5th floor of the vertical campus.  This workshop was basically a presentation to help inform you on important programs that are available that can help you in your future.  The program Degree Works was discussed, and I found it extremely helpful.  This program basically allows you to choose a major and then lists all of the classes that are required for you to take  in order to achieve that major.  Toastmasters is also another program that is available.  It is basically a nationwide program that offers services to help students out with their basic job skills, such as: mock interviews , resume writing assistance etc. Finally the STARR Career Planning Center on the second floor helps students get internships and jobs with well known companies such as large banks.  This helps students transition into the working world and also gets them ahead of the rest of the population, by giving them some real-life field experience.

Arts at Baruch- Gallery Tour

For the arts at Baruch workshop i went to the mishkin gallery that is on 22nd street on the edge of the 23rd street building of Baruch. I chose this workshop because it had the best times and looking at art seemed easy and not alot of work. For this workshop I went with Chris and Audom and when we got there we waited on line for like 45 minutes. When I got inside i had to put my bookbags away since they thought we would rob something. They showed us many paintings which were donated to baruch from either photographers or wealthy people who support the school. They also had this woman explain almost every painting. One painting i remember clearly was where there were four naked people one the floor of like a beach and they were supposed to represent the land with their behinds.  I thought the art they showed us was nice and it looked at certain everyday things from different angles.
