Career Exploration Workshop- Basic Interviewing Skills

I went to the Basic Interviewing skills to get my career exploration workshop credit. This workshop was important because we are sooner or later going to have to go to an interview to get a job and they were giving out many pointers.

In the workshop the speaker introduced herself and then she gave out information packets to everybody.  She then started saying first how you would go dressed to an interview. Men are supposed to go with suits and take a shower and so are women. She then also broke down the interview into steps. She said we have to open with a strong statement and ask questions in the end. She also said some good tips for the people who are not good with speaking and eye contact. I listened closely to this because i am a shy person. She said if your not good at eye contact to look in between thier eybrows so it looks like your looking at thier eyes but your really not. She also said to breathe and relax. if u get nervous.

I liked this workshop because it gave me alot of tips which i am definetly going to use the next time i have an interview. it was very informative and helpful. After she signed our book Ileft.

Personal Enrichment Workshop- Managing relationships

I attended the Managing Relationships in college workshop for my personal enrichment category. I attended this because i was curious to see what the speakers had to say about your relationships in college. They gave out  a lot of information and examples of what might happen with your relationships. Some of the things they said was that you might  have less time with your family based on the amount of work you were going to get in college. They also talked about new relationships that we are going to have like meeting new people and friends if your high school friends did not come over and intimate ones. This applied to me becuase in high school i barely did any work and got good grades and now i actually have to read and there are times where i spend a lot of time doing hw and cant go to the park of hang out as much anymore. They also gave us some tasks to do like getting up and meeting five new people. I didnt really do it since i didnt want to get up my seat but i met three kids that were behind me. I liked the information they gave out at this worshop and it explained more of what is to come.

Community Awareness Workshop – The blood Drive

On October 7 i decided to do the Blood Drive for the global-Community Awareness workshop. The reason i did the blood drive was because i waited until the last minute to do this workshop category and there was only two more, this one and a movie. So instead of waiting for a movie at like 4, i just donated blood.  It was my first time donating blood so i went with a friend from high school who has done it before. It ended up being a bad idea since he just kept telling me how big the needle was and how it was supposed to hurt trying to annoy me.  First i had to fill out some long survey asking me if i ever did drugs or had blood transfusions. It asked me a whole bunch of other questions too. I answered them and gave it in to the assistant. After i waited like 45 minutes on a line they checked my blood if it had iron and if i was fit to donate. They accepted me and send me to another line. While i was on the other line i was starting to doubt if i wanted to do it, and wanted to leave. I ended up staying and they took my blood. The needle wasnt big and it didnt hurt at all. After that they gave me cookies and juice and wrapped my arm around in a bandage. They then signed my book and i went home feeling a little woozy. This was an intresting workshop because i did something that i never did anymore. I dont think i am going to donate blood again.

Academic Enrichment- Play the Basics

On November 4, I attended the Play the Basics workshop at the Center for Academic Advisement. In this workshop, we learned about some general information about the center. I stepped into the workshop several minutes late because I had to wait on line before they took me inside. When I walked in, the group was already doing an icebreaker. We had to come up with a story using words that were on the board. Then we learned about some classes we should take in the future, like the required english and math classes. We also learned about the Degree Works program on the Baruch website. Degree Works basically tells you all the classes should take for a particular major. Then we moved over and talked about the STARR Carreer Development Center. We briefly went over some tests that can help you choose a major. This was basically it, the workshop only lasted around 30 minutes.

Student Life Workshop- Club Fair

On september 24 I went to the club fair in the basement to fulfill my student life workshop. I chose to go to this workshop because everyone was making a big deal out of this one andd they said it was going to be intresting. Also because i wanted to see what kind of clubs there were at Baruch. For this workshop, I went with Audom, Chris and Malek. We first signed in by swiping our ID cards into the computer and then we went in. After the first workshop i expected to see a lot of people and this one was no different, the place was packed. I started looking around and saw many different clubs and fraternity houses. I was trying to look for a soccer club or any other club that did things i liked. The first club we stopped by was the archery club. It sounded intresting and the bow and arrow looked cool but they practiced on saturdays and sundays and those are the 0nly days i can sleep so i skipped it. The other club i stopped by at was the Japanese anime club.  I considered this club because i like some animes and they said they were going to watch some shows every Thursday. I saw this as an oppurtunity to meet new people and watch some good shows so i signed up. After that we got our books signed and they gave us a paperweight. There was supposed to be a raffle or something but we left before they announced the winner. I really enjoyed this workshop because it showed me another side of baruch. I only knew the education side and now i saw that there was activities students did other than take notes. It was a good learning experience overall

Career Exploration

Basic Interview Skills was the workshop I attended for the Career Exploration requirement. Considering I am certainly going to apply to many jobs and internships for the rest of college life and after, this was a workshop I did not want to miss. The workshop focused on the best techniques one should bring to an interview in order to have a higher chance of succeeding. Some of the topics they covered were dress, attitude and preparedness.

On the topic of dress they urged everyone who will ever go to an interview to go in proper business attire or business casual depending on the job.  For a guy full business attire included a neutral colored suit, clean face, and a fresh haircut. For girls, it consisted of a full pants or skirt suit with stockings and mid- heeled shoes. It she does not wear a suit a basic buttoned top and pants would work nicely. Neat hair and nails were also mentioned.

They spoke about attitude briefly. They mentioned being positive and showing interest in the job you are applying to even if it is not your ideal job. If you are nervous try limiting your gestures that show nervousness. And the last piece of advice was to make sure you give a firm handshake because that can set off a good or bad vibe from the beginning. In reference to being prepared, they tied all of these components together saying that being prepared means dressing properly, giving a good attitude and researching your job before and having prepared questions for the interviewer about any concerns or questions you may have. This shows commitment and shows that you are taking every aspect of the job process very serious.

This workshop was helpful, it helped me refine some key interview skills and made me aware of others I did not know of before hand.

Personal Enrichment

The workshop I attended for the Personal Enrichment requirement was “Managing Relationships in college.” This workshop was of special interest to me because moving on to college and succeeding is all about prioritizing and managing your time. Considering I have a boyfriend, friends from high school, family I still live with, friends from school and a part-time job, I felt that life would get pretty overwhelming at some point and it most definitely has but I have learned how to give each relationship I have the time that is best for me. I am being a little selfish but it has worked fine.  This workshop taught us how to take in to consideration our needs and the needs of those involved in the relationship. It specified that you should always focus on what is most important and that family and close friends should always be first because they are your support system. Regarding boyfriends they stated that you both have to give each other the space you need to grow and explore. Making new friends is tough and they acknowledged that but they said that you should make you best effort to make new friends because these are people who will become important in your life because they share one major common essence which is where you go to college and maybe even the same career choice. So an effort should be made to make new relationships.

This workshop was by the most interesting and everyone in there definitely learned something.

Global Awareness

Today, I attended a workshop called “Coloring in your future.” The workshop speaker was Alfonso Qunizo, a former city councilmen candidate who is openly gay. Alfonso spoke about his past experiences in politics and his job experiences. He had worked for politics during three major political sandals and events. He interned for Bill Clinton at the White House and was present during the sex sandal of this presidential administration. He was a community organizer for the Al Core presidential campaign in Florida, a crucial state in the final outcome. And he was in downtown Manhattan handing out flyers for a mayoral candidate on September 11, 2001.  Currently Qunizo works as a spokesman for Con Edison electrical company. The fact that he had accomplished so much being openly gay was astounding and inspirational because it shows that there are no barriers to your personal success unless you allow them to be put up. Quinzo went on to speak about how he came out and how to best succeed at what you truly desire. Like he said, you cannot take crap from others. If they say no, you prove them wrong and become even better.

This workshop was nice and enjoyable. I went with other fellow students from our freshman seminar section and we all seemed to have enjoyed it and took something from it.  No matter what prejudices people have against you, let it be race, religion or sexual orientation, you can accomplish whatever it is you want and truly make in influence on others.

Managing Relationships in College

On October 8, I attended Managing Relationships in College workshop. This was a fun and interactive workshop. Towards the beginning of the workshop, the instructor forced us to introduce ourselves to at least 3 people around us. Then we had to introduce ourselves to at least 3 people that sat in another section of the room. After that, the instructor randomly picked on people and made them introduce someone they spoke with. She often made us split into grounds of three to discuss relationship topics like, family, friends, and love relationships. She spoke about some transitions from high school to college. We talked about some responsibility changes we had since we started college. We also discussed some new responsibilities we now have at home now that we are older. Overall, this was probably one of my favorite workshops because I got a lot out of it. It taught me a lot about how to manage time, which is one of the most important topics to me because I’m having a hard time with it.

Career Exploration- Basic Interviewing Skills

On October 29, I attended the Basic Interviewing Skills. In this workshop, they spoke about how you should prepare for an interview. During this workshop, we had the opportunity to have a mock interview. We split into groups of 2 or 3 and take turns pretending to be the employer and the interviewee. We learned what to expect during an interview and how to prepare for it. First, we learned what males and females are supposed to wear to an interview. The instructor demonstrated how to shake the employer’s hand. She also gave us a list about questions we should expect to be asked during an interview and a list of questions we should ask the interview to show we are interested. We received a packet with a lot of examples of practice questions and sample cover letters.  I did not expect too much from this workshop because it’s about the basic interviewing skills. I already knew most of these techniques from high school.
