Global Awareness

Today, November 12th, I attended a Global Awareness workshop in room VC 2-125.  The workshop was from 12:30 – 1:30.  Alfonso Quiroz spoke about being openly gay and having political power.  This workshop focused on bringing diversity to the political arena.  Alfonso told us about his experiences being a gay biracial man in this world.  He spoke about interning at the White House when he was in  college under the Clinton administration.  He was able to go to all of the fancy dinners and dances.  Mr. Quiroz also spoke of working for Al Gore when he was running for President against George Bush.  He even worked for MTVNews and was able to go to the VMAs.  I was amazed at how much he accomplished in such a short time.  Alfonso recently ran for city counsil but lost.  He is now the spokesman for Con Edison.  Clearly Mr. Quiroz is a very successful person and it is inspiring how he overcame all the obsticles and negativity he had to deal with being a homosexual biracial male.  I enjoyed this workshop because I learned that there are other people who have a difficult life and can accomplish great things.

Career Exploration

On October 29th, I went to the Basic Interview Techniques workshop. This workshop was good one, because it told me how to be prepared for interview. They also told us what we should do for interview and what we shouldn’t do. I feel this was a good experience because I really have never been on interview. I mean most of my jobs I really didn’t need to interview and over the summer I started my own business. They also told us to be prepared for interview and put on resume whatever you think could help you land the job.  One thing I found interesting was that last part. I think I would feel good going on an interview now after learning about this. The biggest thing they stressed was be confident during an interview, most interviewers like that. I am very thankful that I went to this workshop, I definitely got a lot out of it.

Community Global Awareness

This workshop was called Color Up Your Future and it happened on November 12th from 12:30 to 2:30. Alfonso Quiroz was the speaker. He was a former councilman and is openly gay. He told us some great stories how he was intern at the White House when Clinton was there. He told us he was one the community workers in Florida during the 2000 election.  He went on to work for MTV news and even ran for council in New York. He shed light how being gay has affected him. Also being half Latino. He told to never strive for less and even someone tells you, you can’t than that should motivate you more. I was very interested in hearing his stories about how he was able to prosper in career, even though being average C student throughout college. He also told us his story of coming out to his parents and told people that you should do it when you’re ready. Overall, I believe it was a good workshop and experience.

Student Life- Freshman Reception

On September 17, I attended the Freshman Reception workshop. It was the most chaotic workshop I been to. When we arrived, there was a huge crowd outside the Center for Academic Advisement. As we entered the office, someone was handing out folders that contained some information about the workshop. I was one of the last person to get a folder. After several minutes standing inside the crowded office, an advisor appeared. She said she did not expect this many people to attend and were not totally prepared. She borrowed my folder and did a quick run down of what each sheet was about. Then she started signing people’s passports. Overall, I was not satisfied with this workshop. I did not learn much about what was in the folder because it was went over very briefly. I felt that the advisor rushed when she was explaining it and wanted to get rid of everyone. I wouldn’t blame her because I could barely breathe because there were so many people.

Stress relief workshop

On Tuesday I attended the stress relief workshop which satisfies the personal enrichment section of freshman seminar. This was an interesting workshop because it focused on being calmand stay stress free. We started out the workshop by smellig, tasting, and touching a raisin. I have done this before in psychology and knew what to expect. The outcome was a more hightened Sense of aware of what you eat. The proctor wanted us to get a sense of mindfulness with this experiment. We then moved on to learning how to be assertive using the acronym dearman. Using dearman would be useful in many cases such as asking for a raise from your boss. Before we left we had a muscle relaxation session. I believe that this is a very beneficial workshop. It shows me that there are ways to be calm and stress free even with all the work that I have to do. It was worth goin to.

Student Life

On Monday, November 9, I attaended a workshop called “Values, Pressures, and Choosing a Major.” It was in room 3-185 and lasted from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

When we got there, we were asked to sign in, as they did in most of the other workshops. The meeting was a little delayed because of problems of logging into the computer, but we managed to finish the workshop even before the appropriated time.

First we discussed what personality identity means. We discussed how every one of us is unique, yet, we are like everyone else in some ways. For instance, we fall into groups based on similar traits – geographic location, religion, ethnicity, interests, gender, marital status, ability/disability. We usually fall into more than one of these groups, and we also become influenced by subcultures.

We had to fill out a chart based on race/ethinicity, religion, family, gender, and social class, and how they each might affect us when we decide on choosing a major.

Then we discussed different types of goals: character goals, achievement goals, acquisition goals, relationship goals, destination goals, present-time goals, and spiritual goals, and how having balanced goals is important. We shouldn’t just focus on goals based on what we want to do and what we want, but also on the kind of person we want to be and what we should give.

I thought this was an interesting workshop. It was helpful to explore different aspects in deciding what major I might want to pursue. One of the most important things I learned was that it’s important to self-examine yourself to figure out what matters most to you. That way, choosing a major will be a little easier.

Personal Enrichment Workshop

On November 10th, I attended the Stress and Anxiety Reduction workshop. I must say it was very crowded workshop since they tried fitting everyone into a small classroom. The workshop was presented by two guys that were from the guidance department.  They talk about being mindful when you are stressed.  They wanted us to be “mindfulness”.  They wanted us to be in a being mood than doing mood. Also they told us it takes practice. They present us saying that thoughts are written in sand, not stone. It makes me feel better thinking like that.  They also taught a form of meditation that was very soothing. We learn assertiveness training that allow us to get by in a situation like asking for raise.  There is a certain way that you should ask so you don’t put the boss in a tough position or put yourself in a tough spot. They said we should state facts, your feelings, what you want, be confident, and if needed, compromise. I have to say this workshop allowed me to be less stressful especially having a test the next day. I must say the mediation did make me almost fall asleep. But overall in was a good workshop.

Art at Baruch

On October 6th, I went to see the photo gallery. In was a very interesting place. It had great photos from different photographers. Some of my favorite photos were from a photographer called Marilyn Bridges. She has great photos that are from a bird’s-eye view. It was very unique in how she capture the surface and landscape. One of my favorites was a photo of the whole island of Manhattan. The tour was very short, at most it was twenty minutes. There were a lot people there trying to get in. The gallery wasn’t that big, but it was nice. It had a wide variety of photos. I do wish i could have gotten a better look of some of the photos, but it was too crowded. I look forward going back and getting chance to see the photos in depth.

Arts at Baruch- Gallery Tour

On October 13th, I attended the Gallery Tour- The Nature of Landscape/The Nature of Photography workshop. The workshop took place at the Mishkin building. At first, I didn’t know where the Mishkin was, I even asked a couple upper-classmen and they didn’t even know. When we finally got there, there was a long line of people waiting to get in. They only allowed around twenty people in at a time. When they let our group in, we were allowed to hang our book bags on a rack. It was nice because we didn’t have to walk around the tour with heavy book bags. Then a tour guide came and started taking us to the paintings. We went through most of the paintings in detail. She explained what the painting was about, who the artist was and who donated it. The tour wasn’t that long, it lasted for 15 minutes. The gallery was smaller then I thought, I expected it to be a lot bigger. The painting I remembered the most is the Naked Body Landscape. In this painting, there were 4 naked body laying on the ground. And it looks like hills in the desert. It was a funny painting because the tour guide always thought the 4 bodies were female. She said someone corrected her a while ago and said 2 were actually male because they had hairy legs. Overall, this was a fun and enjoyable workshop.
