Arts At Baruch

On Tuesday, November 3, I attended the Arts At Baruch workshop that was entitled “Mercedes Matter: A Retrospective.” It was located at 135 East 22nd Street and lasted from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM.

This workshop was actually a gallery tour of very abstract paintings where you really had to search for pieces within it to figure out what the painting actually was of, or of what it could be. The artist who painted them is named Mercedes Matter.

It was a very short workshop. It was kind of hard to stay interested because there were too many kids crowding around the woman who was our tour guide who was explaining the paintings to us.

However, I thought it was interesting from what I got out of it.

Basic Interviewing Techniques

1. Basic Interviewing Techniques

2. Career Exploration

3. Thurs. Oct 29 12:30-1:30PM

4. This workshop was about what one should and shouldn’t do at an interview. The goal of the workshop was to give advice to students on how to act at an interview. In addition, the STARR career center was discussed and how students can get help in writing resumes and even attend video-taped mock interviews.

5. This was the last workshop I had to do and so I chose this one because all of the descriptions for the career exploration workshops sounded similar.  It did not take me out of my comfort zone because I pretty much already knew everything that they discussed. I have already heard about the STARR center, many times during Freshman seminar class.

6. I did not have much expectations for this workshop because I was just glad to finally be done  with all these workshops. I would recommend it to students if they are interested in learning more about the STARR center. The center is usual for many reasons, besides just find internships.

7. In the workshop I was reminded that the STARR center offers career aptitude tests, which can be helpful in choosing a major. Although I pretty much know what I want to do, the tests can help me decide if I am making the proper choices. I plan to make an appointment with the STARR center soon, in order to use the resources they offer.

Career Planning

On Thursday October 22, I attended a workshop dealing with
internships and everything one may need to know about them. Unlike all
the other workshops, this one lasted the full two hours promised. The
instructor was a woman who could help all the students find internships,
unfortunately she didn’t put up a slide with her name on it so all I
know is that her office is located on the second floor.
She began the workshop by handing out a booklet with everything we need
to know about where we can find an internship or job opportunities and
what to look out for and where to look for it. In the booklet there were
several pages where we could write out our plans for future possible
internships. Later we should look back on what we wrote to see if we are
on the right track.

There were a few things that the speaker mention that I was unhappy
about. The first is that you can get a workshop only after your junior
year, sophomore if you’re lucky. The main reason for that is because as
freshmen, we still need to get adjusted to college and figure out what
we want to do. I guess that makes sense, but I really want to start
gaining experience on my possible major, as soon as possible. Another
thing mentioned was that in order to even speak to her we need to have
practice with interviews and resumes, but in order to do that we need
workshops for that as well. I already have a resume and I’ve had several
job interviews so I feel that I am somewhat prepared. All I need from
her is help to find an internship. However I guess there’s a good reason
for making us go through this whole process.

Overall, I found this workshop to be very helpful. Also, since there was
a student at the workshop who told us about the great internship he
received though the STARR center, it convinced me that all of this
actually works and is as helpful as it sounds.

SACC: Everything You Need To Know

1. SACC: Everything You Need To Know

2. Academic Enrichment

3. Thurs. Oct 15 12:30-1:30PM

4. This workshop talked about what you should do in order to get good grades in math. The goal was to give tips on how to excell in math and to inform students about the SACC center. Math tutoring is one the big functions of the SACC center and students can benefit from it.

5. I chose this workshop because it was something different which I had not attended it. It is a convenient time for me and I decided to go. It did not take me out of comfort zone because math is not my strong subject and I will need all the help I can get.

6. I thought this workshop was going to be about the SACC center as a whole rather than just math. The title was a bit misleading but it still turned out to be okay. I recommend this for students who are not so good at math and may need a few tips.

7. One thing I liked that the lady said is that math is its own language. It is difficult to learn this language but practice makes perfect. There’s no such thing as cramming in math, you have to keep practicing your skills in order to get better at them.

The Changing Nature of Race, Power and Ethnicity in the Era of Obama and Sotomayor

1. The Changing Nature of Race, Power and Ethnicity in the Era of Obama and Sotomayor

2. Community/Global Awareness

3. Wed. Oct 14 4-5:30PM

4. In the workshop, presentations were made about how race and ethnicity constantly affect the world around us. The goal of the speakers was to inform students about the progress being made in crossing racial and gender barriers. Despite the advances, tensions still exist and not everyone is as open to people from different races.

5. I chose this workshop because it sounded interesting. I enjoy politics and thought that it would be great to learn more about Sotomayor. The workshop did not take me out of my comfort zone because the presentations were engaging and educational.

6. I expected to like this workshop and I did. They did not talk about Sotomayor and Obama the entire time but instead interlinked various topics. I would recommend it to other students because it is good to know about current events and how the country is changing rapidly.

7. I learned that even though it seems that racial and gender equality is increasing because of Obama and Sotomayor’s positions in government, there are still disparities that exist. It didn’t really surprise me because a lot of people are very racist and sexist. It is a good thing that advances are being made but I doubt there will be full equality, anytime soon.

Managing Relationships in College

1. Managing Relationships at Baruch

2. Personal Enrichment

3. Thurs. Oct 8 12:45 – 2PM

4. The goal of this workshop was to remind Freshman that college is different from high school and one must learn to manage his or her own relationships. They talked about the various types of relationships that exist and how we should handle each one. Healthy relationships were also contrasted with detrimental relationships.

5. I was going to go to this workshop on Oct. 6 but that got canceled so I decided to attend it on Oct. 8 instead. It sounded like an interesting topic because relationships are something that exists in everyone’s lives. It did not take me out of my comfort zone because I enjoyed identifying my own relationships, with the ones they were talking about.

6. I did not have much expectations for the workshop but it turned out to be pretty good. I would recommend this to other students, especially if they need help managing their relationships. Either way, everyone can learn something from this because we can all relate to it.

7. I learned about the different relationships that exist: family, friends, romantic, professional, etc. It is good to be aware and find a place for each of the relationships that are in one’s life. It is also important not to let any relationship take control of one’s life and overshadow every other relationship.

Arts at Baruch

Today I attended a  tour at the Sidney Mishkin Gallery located at 135 and 22nd st. The workshop was supposed to be from 1 to 2 pm but since there was so many people, they split us up into groups and did many short tours. The tour was about paintings that Mercedes Matter created. They were interesting paintings because they were very colorful with many shapes and lines. Most of her paintings had tables and fruits and that shows that, that is her favorite style of painting. We saw a painting she did when she was a young girl and then a painting she did when she was a late teenager. She began to progress in painting at a young time in her life. She loved painting in the form of still life and her paintings show that as well. Rather than making her work 3D, she made it two dimensional or flat.

I personally liked her paintings because of the creativity they had. The paintings that showed regular day activities like going to the beach, were not detailed but still seemed “alive” and made you feel like a part of the painting. She did not focus her art on details when she painted daily activities. She contributed a lot to modern art since she painted with her own sense of style and in still life. The paintings at the gallery were borrowed from people who bought them or from other art galleries. Some were borrowed from her son. Mercedes Matter lived from 1913 to 2001. We received a summary of Mercedes Matter’s life to get a sense of who she was and why she painted. The tour guide we had seemed very informed and knew what she was talking about. She told us as much as she could in the time period she had and also expressed her opinion on how she felt about the paintings. She appreciates them. I would like to attend another tour because I like seeing paintings and I like thinking about what the painter saw and felt when he/she was painting. Colors and designs grab my attention and are very pleasing to look at.

Global-Community Awareness Workshop

On Friday, October 16, I attended a movie workshop called “My Beautiful Launderettes” that satisfied the Community Awareness workshop. It was the longest and the shortest workshop I attended. It was the longest because I had to wait 4 hours for the workshop. Since I did not have Freshmen Seminar, my day ended at 10:20 AM and the workshop started at 2:50PM. It was also the shortest workshop because we only stayed for about thirty minutes. When it was 2:50PM, people started entering the room. I expected there to be a lot of people since it’s the last global awareness workshop. But instead, only about thirty people showed up.  After about fifteen minutes of waiting, people started wondering why the movie didn’t start yet. A few minutes later, one of the peer mentors went onto the stage and everyone thought the movie was about to start. But instead, she said the teacher that was in charge couldn’t come. Therefore, no one knew how to set up the movie projector. The students started yelling and complaining. After a while, she agreed to sign our books and give us credit because she said we were good and everyone came on time. Basically, I waited about 5 hours just so I can get to stare at a blank screen and get my book signed.

Breast Cancer Walk

On Sunday October 18, in order to fulfill my community awareness
workshop I volunteered for the Make Strides to Find a Cure for Breast
Cancer Walk in Central Park. I signed up to be a route marshall which
meant I had to stand along the route and point people in the right
direction. The 5 mile walk began at 9 o clock. Although it was freezing
cold outside and it was raining throughout the day, the walk still
proceeded and many people showed up. My friends and I were dropped of at
our location at eight. We decided that in order to cheer people up and
keep them enthused to keep walking we will cheer for them and shout
motivational phrases such as: “Walk that walk!” and “You wear that
pink!”. For the most part, the walkers were very nice and joined in on
our cheering and gave us high fives. However, there were some people
that made rude comments saying that what we were doing didn’t count for
anything. Despite that, I can say that I enjoyed being somehow involved
in the walk. Meeting so many people, especially the cancer survivors
made me happy to know that there are a lot of caring people in the
world. Since last year my aunt died from breast cancer, it made me feel
better. Although it was too late to save her life, I helped contribute
to the possibility of saving another life.

Student Services Fair

A few weeks ago I attended a student life workshop. It was located in
the multipurpose room on the first floor. There, they set up a lot of
tables with information on different important areas in Baruch such as
student life, medical record information, registrar, SACC, and more. My
personal favorite was the student life table. The woman that was
representing student life was very energetic and friendly. She provided
all the students with information on shows and other fun events planned
in Baruch. Another table that I visited was the SACC table. The
representative told me that SACC was a tutoring center and that they
basically tutor in almost every subject, which I was glad to hear.
Overall, I found this workshop to be useful because although I wasn’t
able to speak with all the tables, I did get pamphlets that I was able
to gain a lot of information from.
