A Doll’s House

I wasn’t aware that the Doll’s House stage reading counted towards our workshops, but now that I know I really am happy that I attended. The play ran about an hour and five minutes and was very well done. Although there were only five characters and the play had been condensed to its bare bones it was still as powerful as it would have been if it were a full stage production. My two favorite characters had to be the maid and Nora. The maid because she was played by a man and Nora because she herself changed the way she acted around different people in order to not seem inferior. The staged reading was very interesting and the entire theater area is so nice that I will most likely spend much of my time there and maybe see a few more plays from the schools production team.

Academic Advisement

So I haven’t blogged in quite a while so I thought I would start from where I left off. On October 13th there was an Academic Advisement workshop with about 20 stations set up for us to visit. At each station there were different sections of the schools services handing out and giving information about them. There was a raffle for everyone who visited ten stations and got their cards stamped which I entered. It was very informational as it showed me many of the things I could be taking advantage of which are available through Baruch such as the SACC center where they can help with math and a similar center where they do the same for English.

Study Abroad Fair

On September 17th I went to the study abroad fair.  When I went I was expecting to sit down while the faculty talks about where you can go to study abroad and the different programs that were offered.  Instead different tables were set up and we had to find out the information for ourselves.  I ended up liking this set up better because it allowed me to have one on one conversations with the people from the actual country the program is in.  They were able to explain to me the different activities they do and how much they love when Americans visit.  I was able to speak with representatives from Chile, Peru, Brazil, London, Spain, and many more countries.  I also learned that if I wanted to study abroad during the winter or summer intersessions I could possibly get a scholarship for it.  Going to the study abroad fair really opened my eyes to the options we have and I am definitely looking forward to studying abroad either my sophomore or junior year at Baruch.

Student Service Fair

I thought this workshop was the most informative workshop so far. Everything was divided into different sections where you can go to each table if you had any questions or wanted to learn more about it. They were also giving out raffle tickets to win something. I didn’t take one thinking I wouldn’t win anything and I also didn’t have much questions so I didn’t make great use of this workshop. It was very well organized, but the place was too small for a bunch of freshmens to come in. Besides that, it was great.

Club Fair

The club fair was fun. It was the only workshop so far where it lasted for the whole two hours. It was much more comfortable for me since I was in the chess club. The line took forever to get in the main gymnasium, but once I got in, I  was with the chess club guys the whole time. It was interesting finding out all the other clubs they had in Baruch and the free food they gave for signing up some random stuff.

Freshmen Reception Workshop

The freshmen reception workshop was really short for me. Because everyone thought it was a mandatory worshop for all freshmens, it was really crowded and it took some time for all of us to get into a classroom. Everyone was seperated into different classrooms and luckily I went into one where it was really short. The whole worship was only about 15 minutes long. The one leading the workshop made it quick and simple. Although it was probably not as informative as the other workshops, it was fun.

Library Tour

The library tour was satisfying. Since it was our first meet prior to the first freshmen seminar, it was short and simple. Because I was in school for a summer course, I have known most of the information Michael told us about. But there were also new things I’ve learned such as the copy room and the study room. Overall, it was a short and informative tour.

Bais Interview Skills Workshop

Today, 10/29, I attended the Basic Interview Skills workshop.  I have been to workshops that taught me about job interview, but I felt that this one really supplied the right information in just a right amount of time.  They explained to us how to sell yourself in the beginning of your interview.  They even did an exercise which involved us “selling yourself” to the person next to you.  They told how the men and women should dress and even what stores carry proper business attire.  I thought this workshop was a great help to me and I will believe that I will apply all I learned in the future.

freshman seminar 10/20/09 Jeffrey Cheung

This seminar was a useful reminder of what we have to do when we apply for classes next semester.  Most of the things mentioned were covered during the seminar of the summer, but it is good to have it all said again just in case.
