Academic Advisment Workshop

The Academic advistment workshop was fun to go to. Again, it was completely mobbed with people, but after signing in my name and going to the multi-purpose room to attend different stations, I think things ran smoothly. I learned a lot, like where to go for tutoring help, like the SACC center. I also learned about the Simnet test which I really need to study and sign up for. It was helpful to know about all of the things and places you can take advantage of in Baruch, I’m glad I went.

Freshman Seminar workshop

I don’t know if this counts as a workshop, but we went to talk to someone about which classes to take for next semester. I found this extremely helpful, actually, and I think it should be done again to help further. I really did feel extremely lost with how to apply for my classes, what I should be taking and what would help me get into Zicklin but this workshop helped a lot and I’m happy I went. The woman, (I’m not sure if she was from the career advisment center, but I think that’s what she said) was really helpful and explained well. She also answered a few of my questions and concerns, and I’ll be going there to figure out my schedule for next semester as well.

Freshman reception workshop

So don’t know if this counts, but I went to a workshop pretty early in the semester on a thursday. I was told that there would be free cookies, so naturally I went to check it out. There was an enormous mob of freshman, taking up the entire fifth floor. I waited in line with my friends, and then was taken into some obscure room, looking for cookies and to see what we would be doing but there was nothing else going on in that room. I got my book signed by the woman coordinating the workshop, and then she told me I could leave. I got the signature, but nothing else happened. And I never got my cookie =[

The Dollhouse Workshop

My english class was lucky enough to go to this play rectial. I really enjoyed watching the play, even if it wasn’t the real thing. It was very pertinent to the topic we were discussing in our English class, “relationships”. Even though I didn’t like the way the play turned out, it was still fun to watch and it was a nice change of pace from the usual class.

Library Tour workshop

Haha, okay so the first workshop that I ever attended, I’m being told is the library tour. I thought that it was helpful to learn about the library, if you had never been there before. Since I have been at Baruch all summer, I knew my ways around the school and all about the library. But it was still fun to bond with our group and explore the school together. I had a good time.

Personal Enrichment Workshop

This thursday I went to a personal enrichment workshop. It was a little crowded in the room, since everyone was trying to get in it. I sat on the floor with a few other people and listened in on the speaker. She was an “OMBUD” (I think thats how to spell it) for the school, and she spoke about what to do in a situation where you’re in conflict with another Baruch community member. I personally thought that the concept was helpful, but when actually put into action, it would probably not do much. She suggested resolving conflicts by talking about them and finding a solution, which is a good idea, but I don’t usually think that it works out as easy as it is to say.

Club Fair workshop

Okay, so I am not even sure if this is where you blog about our enrichment workshops buuut I’m going to take a risk and do it here. I went to the Club Fair workshop, and I was actually pleasantly surprised. I liked going through all of my club options, as I wasn’t aware that baruch had so many to take advantage of. Right now I’m looking into the pre-law society since I want to study law. Hopefully it will help me to figure out finances and how to afford law school in the future.

Needles, Blood, and Donation

As me and my friends got out of class, excited to finally head home, a discrete blood drive table caught out eyes. (This was back towards the end of Sept.) In high school there were blood-drives held as well, but for whatever reasons, I never actually committed to one even though I had always wanted to. When I saw the opportunity, I felt it was finally time for me to suck it up, and officially sign up. I was happy to not be lazy and take the step to donate blood, and even got a mens shaving gel? as a reward for signing up! It was a weird prize, but nice of them nevertheless. Anyway, the date finally came, Oct. 6 and we arrived at the drive location. I was given a packet to fill out, with history and information on the process. After waiting a bit, I went to get preliminary tested where my temperature was taken, and my finger was pricked. My friend told me once she was not able to donate because of low iron, and ofcourse after the prick was taken, the results showed my iron was too low to donate as well. I was heavily dissapointed becuase I actually looked forward to donating blood. Unforunately, this discouraged me to attempt to donate again. Maybe when I feel like I have ate enough vegetables or whatever foods contain iron I’ll try again!

CAreer Planning: Basic Interview Jeffrey Cheung

I attended the workshop on the workshop on how to go for a job interview.  The speaker gave a Powerpoint with many tips I would never have imagined such as not wearing cologne or black clothing.  Although I am only a freshman, it is good for me to know these things for regular interactions with professors.

Your Money Your Life Jeffrey Cheung

I attended the workshop on managing finances for young adults and found it very useful.  I watched an hour-long video by from pbs about people who struggled to manage their money and got back on track.  Although I already knew most of information and much of it was common sense, it made me rethink some of the expenses I was about make.  I found it somewhat ironic that it was HSBC bank that sponsored much of this program.
