Arts At Baruch Workshop

I attended a “Arts at Baruch” workshop called Mercedes Matter: A Retrospective Exhibition on November 3rd, 2009 at 1:00 pm at the Mishkin building near 23rd street. At first, I thought this exhibit was going to be about cars because of the name of the workshop. Apparently, Mercedes Matter is the name of an artisit. She created many abstract paintings of still lives such as items of fruits on tables. She drew a lot of tables but she added a little twist to it by incoporating shapes of the table to make it look three dimentional. Most of the art pieces there did not belong to Baruch at all which was surprising. Instead, the art pieces belonged to other people and while some had their name next to the portraits, others decided to stay annoymous. We had a tour guide that walked us through the room and I listened to her talk about the art pieces. She seemed passionate about it and she was extremely careful that we did not touch the art work. Surprisingly, a lot of students attended this workshop because they ended up spliting the students into two groups because they couldn’t fit everyone into the room. Overall, the tour guide told us that Mercedes Matter’s artwork became famous after she passed away. This made me think about how usually it is mostly dead artists that got famous and recongized after they passed away and I wonder why. Overall, the workshop was interesting because I like art and watching other people’s art work. However, I’m sure that Mercedes Matter’s art work is amazing but I perfer seeing a vast majority of different topics of art work. Mercedes Matter drew a lot of tables and still lives item and the tour guide taught us how to find the tables in her art. Still, it was a interesting workshop to attend.
