I learned a lot from the Academic Enrichment. The teachers were great and helpful on what type of majors I was interested in. I was glad that I went to this seminar, because i do not know what i want to major in.
Student Life
Student Life was cool it was a good experience. The activities were interesting and cool.
Club Fair 9/24
Another fair I attended in September was the club fair. This was an interesting fair because they had many of the clubs Baruch offers at the main gym. Some clubs I saw there were management club; computer science, art, and some cultural clubs. Like the pervious workshop there were so many students all rushing to get in to the main gym. Luckily there was a side door to get passed all the rushing students, so I didn’t have to stay and wait there till everyone swiped in. After I walked around and saw the clubs I saw some break dancing and freestyle, this was the best part of the club fair.
The Freshmen Reception 9/17
A little late on this post. Unfortunately, I didn’t realize we had to write blogs to pass this class. This workshop would’ve been a lot better if there weren’t hundreds of students trying to bum-rush in to the center for academic advisement, and if the lines were a lot more organized. Even though, they were broken in to small groups the advisors talked about the usually tiers I, II, and III, and about majors and minors.
Basic Interviewing Skills
12:50-2:20. It ended early. WOO-HOO!!! and i got to finish my easy sudoku.
Basically, this was a long and boring, with instances of interesting thrown in there, workshop. The real problem was the woman who was administering the workshop. She had no spirit, no heart. I would not hire her if i was interviewing her.
She gave us a lot of tips what to do during the interview and afterwords. The thank you note was something that i had heard of, but had never really thought it was very important. Another important part was what you should do afterwords. She pointed out that we should come back, and even though I had heard of this, I had not seen an official bring it up.
The other points were not that important, and anyone with common sense could have thought of them. Don’t do certain things with your body, maintain eye contact, don’t be stupid. Basic, basic stuff.
Don’t wear a black suit. I thought that was interesting.
Workshop #3
Since i already talked about the club fair “workshop” that i went to a monthish back, i might as well just also talk about this 3rd workshop that i went to that’s called the annual.. student service workshop or something as long as that. Although not as many people rushed for this workshop compared to the other two it was.. ok i guess. I just wandered around for a bit and seeing all these random people talk about whatever they wanted to present there, and get my card hole punched for a raffle.
The club fair
Alright, i guess i’ll just talk about the club fair that had happened quite a number of months back, at say…… october (?) i don’t remember the exact date. Like with the first workshop that i went to, i just remembered there being an absurd amount of people just… there in front of the gym and getting their cards swiped. Although i did get this neat subway map at the entrance of the gym, not that i’ll have much use for it. So… yeah, I’m not even sure if this club fair is even considered as a workshop at all, i’m certainly crossing my fingers that it is.
K. Johnson- Managing Relationships in College
On October 8, 2009, I attended my Personal Enrichment Workshop called “Managing Relationships in College.” We started off with a few ice breakers with people around us, which worked out in my favor becuase I was sitting with people I knew! It was a workshop geared towards purely relationships, so it was something a lot of us are used to. There was also a lot of talking too, so it was a good oppurtunity to let go of all the college jitters. Also, I got the oppurtunity to talk to some new people. I didn’t learn to much, but I guess it was nice. I may not be something that a lot of people would enjoy, but it is a great workshop if you would like to meet new people and learn about relationship management.
K. Johnson- Club Fair
On September 24, 2009, in the main gym, I attended the Club Fair with a few members of our block. It was the first socially invigorating event that I attended in Baruch. It was nice to see so many students brought together to discuss their personal hobbies and interests. I explored clubs such as the Ticker, Asian club, Archery Club, Hip-Hop club and others. I also got some info on the Athletics program and the oppurtunities that are available. After getting some information on the clubs and activities, I was able to see some break dancing and some free style before I headed out. I plan to join clubs the next semester since my first was filled with physical therapy, homework, and sleepless nights. Yet, after the club fair I realized that going to a commuter school isn’t that bad because, even if Baruch lacks a true campus, the students are there to compensate.
K. Johnson- Basic Interviewing Techniques
On October 29, 2009, I attended my Career Exploration workshop called “Basic Interviewing Techniques.” During the two-hour presentation, I learned about the proper etiquette for interviewing, especially when dressing and giving a handshake. I learned these things in high school, but it was nice to get the lesson in a different setting. I was forced to conduct icebreakers with people I did not even know. It was a workshop that was both informal and fun. The info that I got out of it will definately be used for the rest of my life. We can all do well in college, but when we get to the interviewer’s office for a job we suddenly have to tap into our communication skills. Overall, it was a great workshop that was conducted by the famed Starr Career Development Center. I definately recommend the block to check it out- not only because it was educational but it’s also a requirement to get access to the SCDC!
