This was the first workshop that I attended, and I recieved an invitation from the school to attend. What really caught me was that refreshments were going to be served! As I approched the location, I noticed a HUGE line to get in. After about a half an hour wait, and not being able to recieve papers, a faculty member gave us a quick pep talk on what to expect in college and told us to come in on our free time to recieve our credit for attending the workshop. I learned a few key points such as how to complete a minor and how to register for the next semester. The first workshop I attended was nice and painless- and I got a cookie for attending too.
K. Johnson- Freshman Open House
K.Johnson-Study Abroad Fair
I suddenly realized that I should start working on my blogs when I took a look at the calender! College life and work has just kept me so busy. On September 17, 2009, I attended the Study Abroad Fair in order to learn about studying in different countries. It was interesting because I have a lot of family located around the globe. I made stops at the London, France, India, and Ireland booths in order to get some info on the programs available. Looks like I’m going to pack my bags for a semester! The oppurtunity to study abroad is a great experience that a lot of commuter students should try. At the end of the day, I was all geared up to fly away and learn a lot about our expansive world. Furthermore, I truly believe it is something our block should really looks into.
Club Fair……..Way back When
This was a long time ago. The Club Fair. I didn’t write about it. But i hope its never too late to make up for it.
There were a lot of cool clubs. I got flyers from some. cool flyers. (I go to ballroom dancing now). Also, there were a lot of the clubs that deal with certain specific fields, like law, accounting, finance, and other fun and interesting fields. And there was the IRS tax club. Now that’s cool. Bad guys rock.
Your Life, Your Money
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
No point in that quote. Just thought it was a really cool.
I’ll go backwards. I got a bunch of free stuff. A book, a USB, but i didn’t win the raffle. I know, can’t have everything in life. But I can hope, can’t I?
Talking about credit cards, and saving, I find it obvious. I went through the exact same lecture during freshmen Orientation. Actually, we went through it twice. I understand that this point should be stressed, but we don’t need to listen to it over and over again.
Let me go over what they told me. Just a basic skim. Don’t get credit cards, manage your money, save more than you spend, and just don’t be in debt. It’s not good.
Now the useful information was the new program that the Federal government has on subsidized student loans. These loans would allow you to pay back the money over time, but if you still have the debt after 25 years of paying, than the government drops the debt. That’s pretty cool.
Anyway, fo sho. Hope this helps.
Arts At Baruch Workshop
I attended a “Arts at Baruch” workshop called Mercedes Matter: A Retrospective Exhibition on November 3rd, 2009 at 1:00 pm at the Mishkin building near 23rd street. At first, I thought this exhibit was going to be about cars because of the name of the workshop. Apparently, Mercedes Matter is the name of an artisit. She created many abstract paintings of still lives such as items of fruits on tables. She drew a lot of tables but she added a little twist to it by incoporating shapes of the table to make it look three dimentional. Most of the art pieces there did not belong to Baruch at all which was surprising. Instead, the art pieces belonged to other people and while some had their name next to the portraits, others decided to stay annoymous. We had a tour guide that walked us through the room and I listened to her talk about the art pieces. She seemed passionate about it and she was extremely careful that we did not touch the art work. Surprisingly, a lot of students attended this workshop because they ended up spliting the students into two groups because they couldn’t fit everyone into the room. Overall, the tour guide told us that Mercedes Matter’s artwork became famous after she passed away. This made me think about how usually it is mostly dead artists that got famous and recongized after they passed away and I wonder why. Overall, the workshop was interesting because I like art and watching other people’s art work. However, I’m sure that Mercedes Matter’s art work is amazing but I perfer seeing a vast majority of different topics of art work. Mercedes Matter drew a lot of tables and still lives item and the tour guide taught us how to find the tables in her art. Still, it was a interesting workshop to attend.
Stress and Anxiety
Today, november 10th, i attended the stress and anxiety workshop in the vertical campus. The workshop was about dealing with stress and anxiaty, pretty obvious… The speaker gave us different meditation methods and let us listen to a meditation CD. It was really long and drawn out. It put a lot of people to sleep, although that might have been the point. They also gave us a paper, with vertical columns, that they suggest I fill out when ever I am stressed about speaking to someone. Interesting.
Well im unfortunately done with workshops and blogging. Im ready to explore baruch, well prepared and more informed than when I first came! I feel greattt
Play the Basics
I attended my first workshop on Wednesday November 4th, on Academic Advicement. At the beginning we did an icebreaker: there was a list of words from which we had to choose at least 3 an make a 1-minute presentation. There were a few humoristic presentations.
We were told that the center for Academic Advisement can go over the requirements we need for a certain major, we just need to bring a copy of our degreeworks. And if you are not sure of what major or career you want to pursue, you can go to the STARR Career Development Center and they can help you decide.
Impression Management
This is Korb. I went to the impression management workshop on thursday, the 5th. And I came out with a little more information than I went in with. The man who was directing the workshop was very good, and got everyone involved. He was energetic, and really tried to connect with the students. That was probably the best part of the workshop. Except for Isabella. That was nice as well.
The informatoin they gave you was very basic though. Most of the stuff he talked about was somewhat obvious. And we would go over information, repeating it. This was annoying to me, but I bet for a few people, it was good for remembering the information.
It seems that the most important part of giving these workshops is to try to be energetic. Without the man being enthusiastic, none of the students would have tried to learn the information. I think that, and not the information, is the most important thing you would learn here. We had a room full of kids who have to be there, and one man, through energy can change all of their minds. That is amazing.
A Doll House
So on the 5th, I went to that Arts at Baruch workshop involving the reading of A Doll House in the Engelman Recital Hall. I didn’t really want to go because it was during club hours and I could’ve been home, so I apologize if my writing about it is off (I didn’t give it my 100% undivided attention). But what I got from it was a husband and wife, and the wife saved her husband’s life. But when saving her husband’s life, she forged her fathers signature, which is a big deal. And her husband has an ethical dilemma with this because he is the manager of a bank and had to fire someone because of the exact same reason, but he nonetheless gets infuriated with her. But the husband calms down when he gets a letter relating to his wife’s crime of forging the signature. I guess the title of the play comes from what comes after the letter. The wife then realizes her husband is not the man she thought he was and is disappointed. Thus leading her to be a doll, the husband’s plaything, and that basically they never really loved each other. The reading ended with the line “the greatest miracle of all” which was a reply from the wife when the husband asked if they could rebuild their marriage. Powerful ending. This workshop was pretty good. I wish it was a real play rather than a reading so the visuals wouldn’t have needed to be imagined, but the readers did a good job. The readers fueled my imagination for what the scenes should have looked like. All in all, it was better than I thought it would be.
Student Life: Club Fair 2009
On Thursday, 9/24/09, I attended the Club Fair 2009 for Student Life.
Oh man… I thought the line for Academic Advisement was long, but this definitely topped that off. The line to get swiped in was so long that couldn’t even be defined as a line… more like an angry mob xD. I’m going to come to the conclusion that Baruch is not really good with the organization with lines. Moreover, as for the fair, the clubs were very well prepared in trying to recruit along with the fraternities/sororities. The club I attended prior to this event was FUSION, a culture club for Filipinos and anyone who is interested. They showed very welcoming open arms to my presence and even fed me some good food. The highlight of the event must have been the dance circle. I wish I still had time to dance, but at least my friends were apart of it. I’m even in the video for the club fair !
One of my good friends who was part of the club:

Halfway Airchair (Side-stab)

"Hollow-back"
I started break-dancing in 9th grade, but as my session partners got older it was hard to get together so I didn’t really keep up with my breaking, rather more emphasis on hiphop and ballroom. Jeremy (2nd Picture) was a big part in my interest in pop-and-lock. He’s been dancing for quite some time now and I’m happy to see he still sticks with it. Hopefully I can start up again now that I’m in the same school as Jeremy.
