Managing Relationships In College: Personal Enrichment

On Thursday, 10/8/09, at 12:45-2pm I attended the “managing relationships in college” workshop.

As a whole, the workshop was mainly about the big step into college and how we manage our personal life given that we are now in a new environment. We started off with introducing ourselves. To be honest, there are way too many icebreakers that go to waste because no one ever wants to do it. Many others, including me, were reluctant to participate, but as time went on the comfort level began to grow, I suppose… I remember someone who mentioned something about their relationship with family and school work became interfered. I can relate to that person because I live on my own apartment where I am distanced by my family. It makes me miss them more, but at the same time, the responsibilities that I’m not obligated to do has paved the path to my growth away from my nurturing parents, or so to say, “under their wing”.

Community Global Awareness: Study Abroad Student Fair

I attended the Study Abroad Fair in the MultiPurpose Room on Thursday 9/17/09.
After attending the Academic advisement, I had a lot of time left on my hands during the club hours, so I decided to attend the Study Abroad Fair. The fair had a ton of different countries and information on each of them. I was mainly interested in the European and Japan ones. I came to the fair thinking that I’d only find business-related study abroad programs in those select countries, but I was wrong. All different countries had very prestigious programs that can assist in finance/business. I was surprised to see that there were so many different options available to choose from. The main study abroad program that opened my eyes was “CopenHagen in Denmark” This school had a representative who talked to me about the many prestigious aspects in business that this school has to offer. He told me about the many successful bankers and traders who came from this school as well. Not to mention the beautiful city and views.

This fair would probably be one of the most interesting workshops I had so far. Not to mention that Kevin Johnson and I were in the picture on the “Ticker” for the fair !

Student Academic Advisement: 9/17/09

On Thursday, September 17, 2009 I attended the Student academic advisement workshop for “Academic Enrichment” from 1:05-2:30.

Thankfully, the workshop wasn’t too lengthy. Students flooded the entrance as if it were Black Friday at Wal-Mart, but at least I was able to squeeze my way through to the front :P. The workshop was pretty informative in the sense that the adviser, Sarah D., was concise in explaining the importance and structure of choosing a major and the requirements. I enjoyed this workshop because she got down to the point and was able to answer all my questions toward my interests in the Zicklin School of Business. Aside from swiping in at the entrance for confirmation, we received a folder provided with all of the paperwork that would facilitate our decision on classes/majors. As a whole, the information and the documents given at the advisement workshop was really helpful. Along with the complimentary lemonade and cookies ! Though.. I don’t think lemonade and cookies are a good mix…

Fall of the Wall

Today, november 5th at 5pm, I attended a workshop on the 8th floor concerning the berlin wall. I hate history lectures but the teachers and guest speakers made the information interesting to me. After a short half hour film, they spoke about the different cultures on each side of the Berlin wall and how the east and the west were in a clashing time period. The main point of the workshop, I think,  was to make students aware of all the different perspectives of events in world history. One of the guest speakers actually lived in germany when the wall was built and he was only 8 years old. His parents were concerned with trying to leave. Over all it was a great  informative workshop. The pretzels and soda werent too bad either scince I rushed to the workshop from a 4 o clock XC practice at central park……

“A Doll House”

Today, November 5th, I went to a reading of the play “A doll house” in the Recital Hall. I have never been to a play at the recital hall so it was a first time expirience for me. The play was about a wife who saves her husbands life and in the process, forges her fathers signature which is a huge crime in the play. Her husband works as the manager of a bank and had just let an employee go for forging a signature so when he finds out his wife did the same thing he was furious. He gets a letter that lets him know he will be okay concerning his wifes crime and suddenly becomes okay with everything. The wife is dissapointed in his actions and claims she is his doll and they never truly loved eachother. The play had much more details that i dont feel like typing but I have to say it was pretty dam good. The story was relavant to our age. The actors read the play from paper and still made it lively and exciting. They did it without costumes or props. It was good acting in its purest form. I will definately go to any plays I find out about from now on… It was relaxing too…..

Club Fair

It is kind of late for this post but i only wrote one line before so, Here i go. The club fair was great. I met a lot of club members and learned about what they all had to offer. There was great food and entertainment at the fair. The club fair made me aware of the many oppertunities baruch has to offer. There is a club for just about anything I would be interested in. Maybe when the XC season is over I will find a club to join.

Blogging about workshop!!!

Wow. I have not been to this blog site for a very long time. It took me forever to find out what I had blogged about and what I did not. Wells, today I am blogging about a workshop that I attended on 10/13/2009 at 12:30 pm at Vertical Campus 1-107. Basically, there was a lot of tables set up by people in different activities or by people who are responsible for the different sections at Baruch. I think this workshop was the most informative and helpful workshop that I have been to so far other than the club fair. I was able to learn more about going to study abroad at other countries which is an option that I would like to explore. I also got to know exactly the amount of my finanical aid was at Baruch. In addition, I learned about the tutoring center and the writing center. Overall, I got most of my questions that I had for Baruch answered. The funny thing was that we had this card we needed to get hole punched and there were a million hole punchers just lying around. But I did not take a hole puncher because I actually had quetsions I needed to have answered. I just remembered that there was this one lady, however, who refused to punch my card because I did not have a question for her. I had no questions because I simily did not have a question and she made me stand there looking at her for ten minutes after she finished talking. I understand that we only needed 10 holes to be punched but I went to every table because I wanted to get information about every aspect of Baruch. And I had the 10 holes already but after listening to her and I do not have any quetsions I expected my paper to be punched a hole. And when I thought of just leaving because I came to a point where I did not care, she decided to punch a hole. Besides that one lady, I would say that this workshop was overall very fun and helpful to me. However, I still do have questions, such as I not know how to register for classes for the next semister which is kind of confusing? And I know we were suppose to recieve a mail on this but I have yet to recieve anything. What is happening? Anyway, thanks for reading.

Resume Writing and Cover Letters

Today, october 27 of 2009, I attended the Resume writing workshop on the 3rd floor Of VC. I was one of the lucky ones who got in without registering: Thanks to a few open seats they let some people in. The workshop was a very informative review of writing a resume and cover letters. The speaker went over important formats in a resume and gave us a sheet of verbs we can use for our task lists. The speaker also brought to our attention all the resources we have at Baruch like STARR and student life. She told us how involvement in the school and community can set us apart from others who also have high GPA’s. Great workshoppp

First workshop

Well, i guess since i have to post about something sooner or later, i guess i’ll just talk about that first workshop that i went to. I don’t remember what that workshop was called actually, “fresh start” or something like that (?). Whatever, it’s not all that important. It’s been quite a number a days, weeks even, since i went to that workshop, and i think it was a pretty bad idea to wait out until now to talk about it since i forgot most of what happened there. All i remember was that there was a ridiculously long line there, and i think i actually got my hands on the last folder that they had, so that’s a plus. I’m not too sure if i did anything else, i’m pretty sure i just went in there, got my book signed, stuffed the planner in my bag, and left asap. So ehh…. yea, i guess that’s that.

Annual Student Services Workshop

So a bunch of us went to this workshop after class sometime last week.  Not going to romanticize; it was quite drab.  We basically showed up, pretended like we were interested and got some raffle tickets hole punched for acceptance.  Fortunately, we managed to get it done pretty quickly.  I always forgo bringing my planner with me, I really should start.  The lady there was kind enough to sign the folder that was given us upon arrival.  I honestly hope the rest of the workshops will be as hassle free.
