Personal Enrichment: Mediating Conflict and Resolving Disputes- 11/12/09

The first thing I have to address about this workshop was the lack of organization.  We were told previously that we needed to register for both Career Exploration and Personal Enrichment by a man who works for the center.  When going to this workshop and already being registered on the website, he tells us that we didn’t need to register and that the room was filled and closed already. I do not understand why it is so difficult to get a workshop to work properly. I feel that there is a lack of communication between people and someone isn’t doing their job correctly. After being told we weren’t able to get in we talked to Robert Smith who helped us to get in and complete the workshop. The workshop itself went well. We talked about reasons why conflicts may occur and how to resolve them. There wasn’t much more to this topic.

Student Life:USG-11/10/09

I went to the workshop covering the Undergraduate Student Government. The facilitators were effective on getting their message across. They explained to us how the school’s student activities budget is less than others and showed where the budget is distributed. They really urged us to make a difference in the school by joining and pushing for what we want. It was very interesting and something I can see myself joining.

A Doll’s House- 11/4/09

Before going to see this play,  I wasn’t sure how i would react to it. I do not really like going to see plays because most that I have seen I have not enjoyed. After seeing A Doll’s House, I have to say that I really enjoyed it. The play was about Nora, the wife of a banker, who  in order to save her husband, who was previously sick, breaks the law. She decided to forge her father’s signature so she can take out loans to help pay for her husband medical situation.  She is later faced by a man who realizes exactly what Nora did and explains that he did the same thing and was criticized for doing so. He had lost respect from everyone and chooses to blackmail Nora in an attempt to gain back his reputation. In the end, Nora’s husband finds out everything and reacts by telling Nora he does not know who she is anymore and she is unfit to be a mother and a wife. Nora realizes that her marriage meant nothing to her husband and ultimately leaves her husband and her kids to find her own way. Overall, the play was very interesting and we had learned at the beginning it was a shortened version of the actual play. I believe I was able to understand the play from going to this even though i id not read the actual play.

6. Personal Enrichment Workshop

This was the cherry on top in fulfilling these workshop requirements. Before I talk about the this specific workshop, I have to voice my frustrations about these workshops. They are poorly organized and is constantly changing which requirement it fulfills. I had my last three workshops planned out and then last minute it appears that it doesn’t actually fulfill that requirement. I mean if it’s mandatory to go to these workshops the least that can be done is have them properly organized and it’ll save our group leaders (like Robert Smith) from running around like chickens with their head cut off. This workshop in particulat was the most unorganized. The first time I tried to get in I was told I had to register for it when the career workshop was the only workshop that needed regiatration. Then the second time around o registered and then I was told it’s on a “first come, first serve” basis. And let me tell you I was not first so I was naturally seething with anger. Then once again Mr. Smith saved the day for a number of us that were saved.

Anyhow as far as the success rate of the workshop, on a scale of 1 to 5 it was about a 4. I didn’t really care for this workshop all that much. It was ok I guess. It was just about how to manage conflicts in general and how to manage conflicts within Baruch. It was useful in the sense that if there’s a problem students know that there’s a place on campus that could help them out.

Community Global Awareness- Blood Drive

I was always to nervous to give blood even though I see the importance in it. For the first time I decided to “man up” and give blood and tried to ignore the fact that I was going to faint. When I got there and I started to fill out the paper and speak to the nurse I was told I was not allowed to give blood do to the fact of the antibiotics I am currently on. I didn’t know what to think or feel, on one hand I thought wow thank god I don’t have to give blood but on the other I was almost there and almost got over my fears. I hope that once I am off my antibiotics I will have the courage again to donate blood.

Academic Enrichment

This was my first workshop and it was just terrible. I really got nothing out of it and I think the school wasn’t prepared for that many students to show up. We really just walked in grabbed a bite to eat spoke to an advisor for about three minutes and then got our books signed. I think next time they have to make sure they are prepared for how many students may come or at least limit them.

Career Exploration- Internship + Goal Setting

This workshop was extremely helpful and informative but was a little lengthy. I learnt a lot about how Baruch offers their help towards students in their job search. I was so surprised on the number of different job opportunities that Baruch offers. They also told us who we can go speak to about writing our resumes and how to prepare for our interviews. I was never aware of the job search engine that Baruch offers to its students and I think it was important for me to hear about that. I am happy I went to this but think next year they should cut down a little bit time wise.

Arts at Baruch- A Dolls House

I was a little upset about this workshop until Terrell saved the day. I was waiting outside a different theater for 15 minutes trying to figure out where to go until she notified us that it was changed to a different location. Going into this workshop I thought that it would probably be a waste of time but I was really greatly mistaken. The actors who read the play really did it with passion and got the audience involved. They helped me visualize what was actually going on and even though there was no real acting I could say I saw the play perfectly. Even after the show they spoke to us and answered every question that was brought to their attention. I was really impressed and I plan on attending another in the near future.

Conflict Negotiation

My final Workshop fulfilled the personal Enrichment workshop and was conflict management. There is not much to say other than that it was very full and some students could not make it inside. It was productive however, I learned how to manage my own personal conflicts.

A dolls House

For my Arts at Baruch Requirement, I went to watch a reading of “A Dolls House” which I thought would be boring. I was wrong however, I felt myself being apart of the story and enjoyed it immensely. I have no complaints.
