Arts At Baruch 11/16/09

This was another workshop that I missed during club hours so to make it up I went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It was a really though provoking experience because I never went there and I was suprised of the scale that the exhibitshad . The one of the first exhibits centered around Ancient Greece /Rome . What really stood out for me out of the exhibit was the battle armor that was used during the  different wars during that time and the statutes that were scultped to idolize  the famous people of that time. The Milk Maid exhibit which featured the paintings of Johannes Vermeer showed the painter’s use of lighting in his paintings and shades . The paintings looked very good but it was just different women in the same environment doing the same thing , so the interest wore off toward the end.The European Sculptures were probably my favorite  and teh sculpture that stood out for me was called ” Ugolino and his Sons” .  What really amazed me was the way that the sculpture articulated and the emotion of dread within Ugolino by his facial expression and the way that the bodies were articultaed to real people was amazing defiantly a work of art .

Aside from that the other exhibits didn’t really hold much of a candle  to what I mentioned above . The Byzantinian exhibit mostly featured pots, dishes , little statutes nothing to big . The modern photography exhibit was something that I just didn’t get , for example there was a picture of  a pieace of the road that ha dthe dimension of 8 by 6 feet ( my guess) . I started at it for a good 5 minutes and had no clue why it was up , other notable pictures looked like color pallettes from Home Depot.  One painting which I found to be outstanding was called ” The Massacre of the Innocent” by Francois Joesph Navez , the way that the painter portrayed the massacre was mesmerizing and considering that the picture looks 3D form far away , makes it seem even cooler . Overall I would recommend anyone who has not been to the Metropolitan to visit it and experience it

personal enrichment – mediating conflict and resolving disputes at Baruch

Soo this workshop made me a bit angry. I registered for it and I when I went to it I was told the workshop was full and that I didn’t have to registered. This led to me getting attitude from the guy who was at the door telling me I couldn’t go in with my friends who already went in. However he even admitted that this wasn’t his workshop. Then Robert Smith the wonderful peer mentor that he is made more room in the room for people and let me into the workshop. The organization of the workshops has been frustrating because this situation has happened to me before except the reverse I went to a workshop that I was told wasn’t need to register and apparently you had to register to get in. So pretty much people who registered where not allowed into this workshop while other people who didn’t where allowed in. Anyway the woman who gave the workshop talked about mediating conflict at Baruch. We also talked about problems in our relationships outside of school.

The people giving the presentation where very clear and informative. They held a discussion for people to ask questions about the school, problems they where having and what they could do about it.

Personal Enrichment Workshop 11/16/09

To fullfill my Personal Enrichment Workshop I went to the Values , Pressure and Choosing a Major workshop. I was hoping that it would help me decide what kind of path I should take in life but it just ended up being a fill in the chart workshop. The chart itself was kind of confusing and the relative feel of the workshop was ” I gotta do this” . I was highly dissapointed by it because I got nothing out of it at all . Hopefully next year they’ll improve on the core basics and help enlighten the incoming freshmen

Community Awareness 11/9/09

I missed all the Global Awareness Workshops so to make up for them I went to the United Nations building on 1st ave between 42nd and 43rd. It was my first time being there and I  was amazed by the sheer size of the building  and the multicultural vibe I got from it.When I first entered the building the statue of the twisted pistol  really took me by surprise . It had the barrel twisted to represent nonviolent ways of  solving international problems . It was a pretty cool symbol to represent the UN’s stance on using nonviolence to solve world problems.

Inside ,the actually building  feels like a museum dedicated to the outreach programs that the UN has done .It has  walls showing all the progress that it has done and the outreach that it provided toward helping people in need all over the world. It also has a specific area dedicated to its project in Africa to bring awareness about HIV/ AIDS , where current HIV positive volunteers to the project recollect their own experiences and their desire to help others in the same situation. Sadly when I went there weren’t any tours given so I tried wondering into a UN session but the door was locked . Overall though it was a pretty interesting visit that taught me a lot about the interactions the UN has on the world.

The workshop provided me with the information needed to prepare myself for my future job interviews. From what to wear to how to present yourself this workshop provided everything I need to one up my competition . I also learned that the STARR Career Center can help you build up a impressive resume from scratch and help you improve your interview skills . Overall it was very informative workshop that stretched out for a bit too long .

Academic Enrichment 9/17/09

This was my first workshop and it involved the librarian teaching us how to use the library and its resources . Some of the stuff was basic and known before the workshop such as your computer user name and password but everything else was new . It was helpful to learn that we could take out laptops for our classes or even text books if need be. The Bearcat Search engine is also helpful when you need to find something and the reference desk is packed with people . Overall it wasn’t a bad workshop , I just wish the librarian wouldn’t pause every so often to emphasize and point because it took away from the flow of the workshop.

Community-Global Awareness

For this workshop i attempted to donate blood but was unfortunately deferred do to the fact that they felt that I did not weigh enough to be able to safely give blood. I would have liked to donate blood because I believe I am the O blood type which is the universal donor. Maybe next year I will be able to donate blood.

Academic Enrichment

This was the only workshop that I was very unhappy with. Basically all that happened was i waited on a huge line, went into a room, they handed me a booklet with some information in it, and then I got my book signed and left. Nothing at all happened there and I felt that this was a huge waste of my time. It seemed very unorganized and not well run. I was very dissapointed with this workshop.

Arts at Baruch

For this section, I attended a play called “A Doll’s House” in the theatre. It was a very interesting play and I enjoyed it a lot. It also introduced me to a new part of Baruch that I had never seen before.
