Academic Enrichment

I went to an academic enrichment, titled “Play the Basics” on Wednesday held in Academic Advisement center. The workshop was only meant for freshmen only. Basically, they provided information for freshmen how to use the academic advisement center. They will help students who have less than 45 credits.

Presentation

I felt my group did an okay job. We seemed to be unprepared but in the end everything fell into place. The presentation is good practice for when you haveto present a topic to a larger audience. Communication is key in the business world in securing a cilent. A class i am taking is communicaiton which is required for all baruch students to pass in order to get their degrees. Many people are scared of speaking publicly but I personally dont think its as bad as many people think. In the end, everything will be fine and getting up and doing it is the hardest part. Once it is over, you will feel a sense of releif. Good job guys.

Student Life Workshop

This workshop happened in the gym. I thought it would never end. It was really boring standing and walking around looking for a club to join. I went early with a friend who decided to join the “TEAS”. It seemed over crowded since there are about a thousand incoming freshmen and many of them were forced into going to this event. It was a good experience to know what baruch offers and I found it important to join a club so you’ll be active during your school year. Joining a club allows you to meet new people and network easily. I learned about the STARR program and what they offered. It seemed to be a good thing baruch has this program since STARR helps students with their interviewing skills along with communication skills as well as their resume. Out of all of the programs, i think the STARR program is the most helpful in securing your success.

Personal Enrichment Workshop

In this workshop, it was very similar to the one that took place in the gym. Tables of sections that baruch offered. It was locations of offices throughout baruch to help students become more successful. I learned that baruch had a daycare center for students that are parents who need to send their children some where. I felt that was really helpful for young mothers and young fathers attending baruch. It allows them to concentrate more on their studies while not worrying about their children. I also spoke to an academic advisor. She was nice and answered all of my questions about what classes i should be worried about and what classes i should take out before i move on to the next. She knew what she was talking about, which was helpful. I felt this workshop was pretty boring overall but it was good to be aware of what baruch offers you.

Career Exploration Workshop

During my time at baruch, I decided to attend a career exploration workshop. It was a simple workshop were you sat there and listen to the do’s and don’ts in an interview and securing your position in a job. I felt it was a good workshop but most of the material that was presented was common sense and I knew most of it already. I met a few people and we were asked to introduce ourselves and talk a little bit about ourselves while telling them our experiences, internships, previous jobs, etc. I talked about how I had a few internships and they were shocked I had so many. They were talking about their jobs in a daycare center which I could relate as well since i did community service and worked at the daycare that I useto attend when I was younger. I thought this workshop was helpful in which it helped me get more comfortable with people.

Academic Enrichment Workshop

I attended an academic enrichment workshop on September 17, 2009 at 12:30 to 2:30 which was basically about what types of clubs and organizations they offer here at baruch. I thought it was interesting how baruch was able to plan this with all the freshmen, clubs, and other baruch students gathered all together in one place. It was a good experience to meet new people while getting the know what baruch offers. I signed up to many of these clubs but as of now, none of them really got back to me about their information or anything. I recieved many letters and packages that they offered to me. I personally thought there wasn’t that many groups/clubs for me to join, but i applied anyway to see what type of responses i would get.

Career Exploration Workshop

The workshop I went to was Impression Management.

It was really helpful because they told you things like you give an impression to everyone, even to your friends, every minute you are in class.

If you’re late always, lazy, and don’t do homework, how’s the teacher going to give me a recommendation or a friend give me a good job position.

It was cool stuff and I learned some things of it.

Arts at Baruch

For this workshop I went to the play A Doll’s House.

It was really impressive that even though it was kind of a practice, the actors performed really well and the expressions were so vivid and looked natural.

It was about a conflict between a husband a wife and two employees of the husband. Finally the conflict between them had nothing to do with the message, it was the way the husband reacted to the wife. It was about the husband treating the wife like if he were superior. All this related to women rights. I think that’s more like things of the past, today there’s little of that I think.

A Doll’s House

On Thursday, I watched a professional reading of Henrik Ibsen’s “A Doll’s House” in the Engleman Recital Hall. The play, which normally takes around 3 hours to perform, was cut down to just over an hour. While the director cut a lot out, it was still very easy to follow. The actors and actresses were very believable and performed the play extremely well. I have read the actual play before, and, with that being so, I felt the play did the actual written play justice. I love going to all types of theatre in general, and overall, my experience at the reading of “A Doll’s House” was very enjoyable!
