Club Fair

On Thursday, I went to the Club Fair in the main gym. When I got there, the line to scan your I.D. card was practically the entire length of the hall. I ended up talking to the three girls who were standing in front of me about the clubs at Baruch. The girls seemed to know more than I did about the different clubs at Baruch, so I asked them questions regarding the certain clubs I thought I would be interested in. When I finally got into the gym, there were so many people walking around it was hard to get to any of the club tables.

One of the clubs in which I am interested in joining is the Baruch newspaper, the Ticker. I signed up for the club and met the editor of the lifestyle section, who talked to me about the different sections of the newspaper and asked me about what I would be interested in writing about. I told him that I would like writing for the lifestyle section or the arts section. I plan on majoring in English; therefore, I feel like becoming a writer for the newspaper would be beneficial for, both my academic life here at Baruch, and my future career.

Study Abroad Fair

On Thursday, I attended the Study Abroad Fair in the Multi-Purpose Room. There, at about a dozen tables were set up by various colleges offering information on their study abroad programs. There were a lot of students who attended the fair, so it was difficult to try and talk to every representative about their respective program. From what I gathered, through direct communication with various representatives, listening to other students’ questions, and the reading the brochures that were offered, not only are the places you can study abroad enormous, but the options that you have regarding what you want to study there and when you want to go, are abundant as well.

The main purpose for my visit to the Study Abroad Fair was to gather some information about studying abroad in Ireland. I have been to Ireland twice over the past ten years and I find the culture and history extremely interesting. Since I want to be an English major, I am very interested in studying Irish literature while in Ireland. I received a lot of information about studying abroad in Ireland at the fair. The representatives were very helpful in answering my numerous questions about their respective programs and telling me where to go to learn more information. From what I learned at the fair, I think I would like to study in Ireland during the Summer, partly because I want to spend my Fall and Spring semesters here at Baruch, and partly because the weather in Ireland is the best during the Summer!

The Importance of Good Communication Skills

Last lesson’s topic dealt with the qualities of an effective public speaker and good communication skills. An effective public speaker is calm in front of an audience. They should refrain from fidgeting, pacing, and keeping their hand’s in their pockets. The speaker should speak loudly and clearly and try to keep the information they are conveying as concise and easy to follow as possible.  A good public speaker should know their audience: meaning they should use language appropriate to the audience to whom they are speaking. A visual aid, if any, should only be used as a reference, not as the foundation of the speech.

Using appropriate hand gestures to engage the audience in the speech is also a helpful way of bettering one’s communication skills. The speaker should face their audience, as it helps to keep the attention of the audience better. A good public speaker makes eye-contact with their audience and does not stare at the floor, their hands, their note cards, or their visual aid. If there are other members of the group who have yet to present or have already presented their part of the speech, those members should be, or, at the very least, appear to be, engaged in the current members speech. Having good communication skills and being an effective public speaker come hand-in-hand. Both are important, not only in the classroom, but outside of it as well.

“What makes the public speaker effective?”

There’s many factors  that makes up effective public speakers, such as making eye contacts with listeners, memorizing key points, or walking around the stage from side to side. Credibility and conciseness takes a big part too, but before everything, speaker has to get full attention from listeners; whether the information is reliable or not. Public speaker usually gives speeches in a big auditorium. In order to get everyones attention, I think walking around or using hand motions are very important. Personally, when I focus on one point of the stage, where the speaker is standing, I start to lose concentration. Thus, making a big motion and staying active makes the public speaker effective.

Communication Skills

Being an effective public speaker is easier for some and harder for others, but everyone can improve through practice. Practice brings experience and experience brings confidence. An effective public speaker needs confidence, wide vocabulary, correct gestures, eye contact, good presentation, and more. This all can be learnt and implemented at your speeches. I believe the more practice, the better a person can speak in public. I have not much experience at it but with every speech I had I improved a little more. I’m willing to improve a lot more since I know it is extremely important if I want to have a Business Major, but I’m sure when the time comes I’ll have mastered this.

Assignment #2 – Communication skills

I believe practice and experience make a public speaker effective. For example, people usually gain confidence through their experiences in speaking. As they practice and experience, they are more comfortable in their speaking, so the audience can hear the speaker better and easy to understand. As they go over their speeches, they will find some mistakes, such as improper vocabulary for a speech.

I attended an enrichment which was held on Thursday, Sep. 17. It was about declaring minor, academic advisement, … information for freshmen to know. I received a letter that this enrichment was mandatory, but it wasn’t. It only took like 10~15 minutes. I am just happy to get the signiture on my planner.

Assignment #1 – Reservation Blues

I like to talk about the theme of the book, “Reservation Blues” by Sherman Alexie. In this book, there are three groups of people: Native American, White, and African American(Robert Johnson). In the beginning, Robert Johnson appears to Thomas and asking for help. If you read the book, Robert’s experience is similar to Thomas’s experience which is showed as the story progresses. They both heard voice from the guitar, and became a musician. They gained fame, but lost their freedom. Sherman Alexie used symbolism that the guitar symbolizes the desire by white man. The influences of white people to Native American and African American are similar. In historical view, these influences are colonialism and slavery.

I, as a immigrant to America, have influences from white people although it is not like colonialism or slavery. The influence would be the reason I came to the United States. Immigrants come to America with their American dream. They want to prosper their lives and succeed in the future. The images of life of Americans influence people to motivate immigration.

Communication skills

There are many variables that contribute to the effectiveness of a public speaker such as eloquence, eye contact, projecting voice, emotional, speak calmly, hand gestures, and speak to the audience. I personally think that’s harder than it sounds because I don’t do a lot of presentations and i have a case of stage freight so I tend to  stutter and mumble sometimes. Being in the business major I know i have to cast away those fears if  I were to succeed in the industry so communication is an important aspect.

During one of the enrichment workshop that i attended on Thursday, there was a mix up as the faculties expected to have 200 freshman students but over 1000 students came so the meeting was only 10 minutes long. She briefly answered some questions and spoke of minors and majors and the requirement of classes that the different schools expects.

Communication Skills

To learn and master some of the communication skills in business is through person experience. I think the best way to learn how to speak properly is in a business environment. Some of the skills include, eye contact, perfect distance from the person, voice volume and hand gestures. I’ve been through many internships and I think it is a great experience to get hands on experience with other professionals and among your peers.

Recently, I attended the Freshmen advisement seminor that took about one hour. There was about 1000 freshmen who seemed just be alot more than what they have expected. Questions that were asked were how many credits are needed to graduate, if it was possible to take classes in the summer and questions regarding about minors and majors. It was an interesting experience.
