Case Vignette#2

Case Vignette#2

I think what Sophia did was wrong.  During the group project, she ignore responding to her groupmates on phone, email and facebook.  Sophia think all her time is hers.  She works 30 hours a week and taking 4 classes.  She basically doesn’t want to put her time on any other people.  As a result, her groupmates excludes her from the group.

Sophia has to plan out some time for other people.  If she keep her attitude afterward towards other people, it’s very hard for her to make friends.  While her group mates try to tell her to finish her part, she said she didn’t like how the project turned out to be.  I think she have to use some time to think about herself and all her attitudes.  If not, nobody will rely on her.

Sophia’s Situation

During the last class discussion about the case vignettes. I had thought about Sophia and how she was wrong and being unfair to her project group mates. Basically, Sophia said that she has to work during the week and would not like to meet with the group members outside of the class to discuss the project. In addition, Sophia did not want to spend her weekends working on the project neither. She simply said it was “her time”. Yet, while contributing nothing to the group, Sophia got mad when the group started working without her.

My thoughts is that Sophia deserved to be expelled out of the group, because she is being unfair to the rest of the members. Sophia definitly need to work on Time Management, and plan her working and school time carefully. I think that is the best way that she can ever get out of a situation like not having enough meeting time with her group members and working on the project. But right now, Sophia is just being selfish and not having concern about the rest of the members in her group.

Case Vignette #2

In class, we discussed about two different cases in which some students decide to do their own thing. I was assigned case number 2, which talks about a girl Sophia who seems to be better than everyone else. She works 30 hours a week and is taking four classes and “doesn’t want to” waste her time meeting up with her group members on the weekends because it is
“her time”. How stubborn can you really be? How can you really say you are wasting your time by working on a group project? I think she needs to grow up and start to realize that you need to manage your own time and school time within your schedule. Also, the other group members are also stuck doing the project on their weekends as well. If a professor assigns you work, it is expected that you pitch in you part to improve the project as a group.

If i was ever in that situation, i would remember that person’s face, and never work with him/her ever again. In the case of Sophia, i would try to speak to the professor first and if the professor doesnt care, i would just continue the project. I would realize that the project still needs to be done even without Sophia. The due date isnt going to wait for me but will slowly creep up. Waiting for Sophia to respond back from the emails, phone calls, and facebook messages wouldn’t be the brightest idea because i will end up with a failing grade. I wouldnt care if she gets the credit as well because her name is on the group but i would spread the word that she is lazy and would never pitch into any work.

Blog HW

In class we examined two case vignettes and discussed them. In my group, we looked at case vignette #1. In this case, a student, Ron, is late for his psychology class. Instead of going to class he skipped it and went to the cafeteria. When he asks his friend for a copy of the syllabus, Ron doesnt read it so he doesn’t realize he has to write a reaction paper to chapters 1 and 2 due next class.  When he tells his teacher that he couldn’t do the homework because he didnt have the syllabus, he is given a zero for the homework. Ron finds this unfair.

This shows that Ron didn’t take the initiative in doing the work. He has to has to change his work ethic because it isn’t high school anymore and he must submit in his work on time no matter what. This can easily happen to anyone because people don’t always realize that teachers are not as leniant in college as they were in high school. They also may be overwhelmed by the responsibilities that they have.

I enjoyed reading Reservation Blues and i highly recommend it. The reason why i like it so much is because the characters are all so different and they have to be in a band together. The chemistry that the bandmates have are interesting and at times quite humorous. The only negative aspect of the book is too many dream sequences. A lot of the dreams the characters have are never mentioned again and don’t really tie in to the story.  Other than that, the book is definitely something i suggest all to read.

Blogging Assignment # 1 – Getting you all Started

Hello Everyone,

It was nice meeting you all yesterday at our first in class session of Freshman Seminar. I was overwhelmed by the size of the class but as they say the more the merrier. I feel that our group is very vibrant and I hope it stays the same for the rest of the semester. As discussed in class, you are expected to blog about certain topics and areas to fulfill you Freshman Seminar Class participation. Please do not look at this as just a fulfillment of a class requirement but as a means for you to improve your written communication skills and build bonds with your colleagues by sharing your thoughts and ideas. We are not expecting any of you to be professional writers when offering your bits but simply to put forth your ideas in the most positive and unsoiled manner as possible.

As your first official blogging assignment, you can choose to write about one of the following;

A) For those of you who read the book, “Reservation Blues,” by Sherman Alexie, reflect upon what the book meant to you or how it made you feel or look at something differently. You can even blog about a major theme of the book. However, whatever you choose to write about must connect to your life somehow.

B)Continue the discussion you left off in your groups from our last session when we looked at the Case Vignettes which essentially was getting at adjusting to college. Whether it was case 1 or 2, continue talking about what your group discussed in terms of Awareness, Knowledge and Skills. Awareness being taking responsibility for your actions, Knowledge of what is expected of you in college and Skills being putting what you have learnt into practice.

Two to three paragraphs is all we ask of you but feel free to write more if you so desire. This assignment will be due on Tuesday the 8th of September, 2009. Please refrain from any plagiarism and please do not restate what someone else from our section has already stated in their blog. Most of all have fun with this assignment and welcome to the world of blogging.

Yours sincerely,
Junior Anand Ramroop
Peer Mentor of Section BEG1A
