Freshman Reception 9/17/09

I didn’t learn much from this workshop since I showed up a bit late and their was a ton of people there. I got my planner signed and they told us where we could pick up the folders they were giving out. I have yet to get that folder and I don’t remember where to pick it up. I should probably try to find another workshop like this because I apparantly missed out on a lot of important info.

Study Abroad Fair 9/17/09

I never even thought about studying abroad and I thought this workshop would just be a waste of time. After looking at some of the options though I don’t think studying in another country would be such a bad idea. I checked out a few of the offers and even though some are expensive, a few of them actually have decent prices. I talked to some of the people there about how it works exactly and they were very helpful. I’m glad I went to this workshop because I would have never considered studying abroad if it wasn’t for this.

Library Tour with Anna

I already had a little knowledge previous to this tour because I did a little exploring on my own. Nevertheless I still was able to take in a few new things. I did not know until this tour that Baruch allows you to rent laptops and textbooks, which is helpful for days when I don’t feel like lugging my own to school. 🙂  I personally utilize many of the things offered by our school library and find many of it’s resources very helpful!

Academic Enrichment: Freshman Open House

I really enjoyed this event, especially since I was one of the first to arrive so I did not have to wait in the really long line. 🙂 I had a great conversation with two of the advisers. Although many of what they said was a repeat of topics I had either heard at orientation or read up on my own, it was a nice little reminder so I keep it fresh in my mind. I did learn new things also though for example that I have quite a while before I have to finalize the decision of my major, which is a big weight off my shoulder because I am a little confused on that. I also learned that I have the ability to minor in anything that interests me, not necessarily something that relates to my major and that doing this is actually helpful for me, which was exciting to know I can learn about something different.

Overall this workshop was very enlightening & I really enjoyed it, the lemonade was yummy too! 😉

Library Tour 9/09

The Library tour given by Anna was a very informative tour of the library.  The tour allowed me to gain a general knowledge of how the library works, and where I can go if I need help or if I need something in the library.  The library tour was extremely helpful as I find myself in the library almost everyday.  The sleeping spots that were pointing out are also very useful.  I would completely recommend the tour to another student.

Club Fair (09/24/09)

I went to club fair and decided to only join the handball club for now because that’s what I’ve always played during high school and I didn’t want to join too many clubs. There were many fraternities that came up to me asking me to join but I told them all no because I didn’t want to focus on them too much.

Conversation with Joseph O’Connor (10/20/09)

Although I usually don’t enjoy it when authors read their writing out loud, I liked the way that Joseph O’Connor read his work. His Irish accent gave it a mellow quality, and he didn’t stress out words or overdo the acting, and instead talked naturally. I especially liked the piece he wrote about Patti Smith. I liked how coincidental his discovery of her was, the way that he came across her album by accident and only bought it for its cover, and then came to like her music as well. It felt genuine.

I would recommend this workshop to anyone who’s interested in creative writing.

Student Services Fair (10/13/09)

The fair was very informative. There were a lot of services that I didn’t know about until I actually went to the fair, so it was helpful to know when, where, and how I could make use of them. I learned that the Student Health Center is across the street from the VC, that they offer free HPV injections, and that they offer other services to students at prices much lower than is average. Since there has not been much time to really explore the buildings and offices in the school, I thought that it was a quick way to learn about centers like the SACC Tutoring Center, Office of Academic Advisement, and the Office of the Registrar. After I left I felt better equipped for the next semester.

I’m glad that I went. Now I won’t be so lost trying to figure out where I need to go if I need something. :]

Service Fair

The service fair was very informative. It showed me all the academic and social services that Baruch offered and how I should take advantage of them. Student Life seems to be the most valuable service offered. You can find answers to most of your questions about Baruch at this office. Overall, I am happy I chose to do this workshop because the information I received will probably be beneficial in the future.
