Block 40 Class Notes (Philos. & Pol.Sci.)

I don’t know if it worked, but I attached my notes from Philosophy (Prof. Carl Hammer) & Political Science (Prof. Lisa Rickmers) for any who want to see. I don’t take notes (unless you consider doodling) in History (what am I to copy tangents or years?, hehe). If it didn’t work I’d appreciate if someone advised me on how to do it. FYI, I work in Word 2007 (ftw!) so when I save it in Word 2003 compatible version (.doc instead of .docx) the format might be slightly messed up…I apoligize for that. Also, in Pol Sci (and possibly Philosophy also) my titles/classwork numbers are kinda off toward the end (in Pol Sci I think I have either 2 5s or 6s, but they’re different). I could upload my Philosophy papers if anyone wants (I just felt that wouldn’t fit into the tile of this blog and would be kinda showy…I have to work on not bragging so much).

Freshman Reception (9/17/09)

I liked this workshop for several reasons:

(1) The counselor person reminded me about taking the Simnet Excel Test, telling me that there was a computer class I could take (which is what I’m interested in majoring) since I already took BUS 1000 for CollegeNow and A.P. Statistics.

(2) It fulfilled my Seminar Workshop requirement =) And plus,

(3) It was short and I got in early when there were barely any other students so I didn’t have to wait.

I also feel like it’s up to us to find out what we’re doing and so we must ponder it first, but giving us handouts and a heads up is always refreshing.

Gallery Tour:The Nature of Landscape 10/13/09 @ 1:00 – 2:00

I went to the gallery tour in the Sidney Miskin building on 22nd street. We saw photography by many artists like: Marilyn Bridges; and basically what their perspective of nature is. I really enjoyed Marilyn Bridges photos of nature in aerial view was quite interesting. On photo of hers that i was particularly fascinated by was the air view of this glacier. Before the tour guide told us what the picture was, I thought it was a road and mountain, so it was interesting how she manipulated nature. Another one of my favorite photo’s in the gallery was Four Nudes in the City by Lucien Clergue. At first glance, it looked like I was looking at hills or a valley like area, but once you get a clear look at the picture you actually notice that its just four nude people laying down on the street, and you basically see their back and bottoms (butts). It was quite funny after u realize but It was actually a really creative way of thinking about nature.

This workshop met my expectations. Although it was a small gallery, it was also very creative and really gave the viewer a different way to look at nature. I chose this particular workshop for the Arts section because I love nature and I’m a big advocate of the “green” movement. I also love photography myself and take a lot of pictures of landscape so it was nice to compare how others work. It definitely took me out of my comfort zone. I didn’t think I would like visiting gallery’s and the theater, basically the arts part of Baruch, but now I feel more comfortable going to these art events. I would definitely recommend students to go visit the gallery. It’s really nice inside too, feels very serene.

Managing Relationships

This workshop was very helpful because it focused on the importance of networking in college. When you are part of a large networking community, it helps you in finding a good job once you graduate.

Relationships can be big part of how well you do in college because they do affect you in one way or another. The lecturer first started off with talking about how our relationships with our parents or other family members have changed since we started college. She talked about how starting college can bring a lot of change into the relationships because as a student, you’re really occupied and have very little time to spend with others.

She then made us do an activity where she made us talk to 5 random people around the room. It was intimidating because I am a really shy person and I felt awkward talking to a random person at first. But I did talk to a few people.

She also talked about intimate relationships and how they can affect us as well in our academic success. They can distract us especially if they’re long distance. Some may not even last long because of the distance.

Finally, she gave us a website that she recommended signing up for. It’s called Linkedin.com; she said it’s similar to Facebook but it’s used to get jobs and have networks.

Through this workshop, i learned the importance of networking and relationships because both factors can have a great impact on how successful you are during and after college.

Club Fair 9/24/09 (late post)

Sorry I didn’t blog for so long, I was kind of confused about the system for a while.

Anyway, I went to the club fair and saw lots of interesting clubs, though about half of the tables I saw were sororities/fraternities. I’m not interested in them, but it’s nice that even a commuter college like Baruch has them. I signed up for The Ticker and the Japan Club because in high school I was in the newspaper and the Japanese Club, but I decided to try new things as well so now I’m part of Peers For Careers and the Movie Maker’s Club. :] I have no experience making movies so I’m looking forward to learning. I love that the school provides equipment for stuff like that because in high school we definitely couldn’t afford a movie maker’s club.

Overall, it was a good experience and very helpful.

Managing Relationships Workshop 10/08/09

Today I attended the Managing Relationships Workshop. I don’t think it necessarily taught us how to manage relationships, instead it taught us about the different relationships we have and how it changes through college, such as the relationships we have with our family, our friendships and intimate relationships.

This particular workshop took me out of my comfort zone because they made us go around the room with the intentions of introducing ourselves to five new people. However, I only met one or two new people but the good part about it was I ran into a friend from middle school who I lost contact with after graduation and it was good talking to him.

I would recommend this workshop to someone who wants to meet new people but I would suggest that you don’t go by yourself if you’re not very outgoing. From this experience, I learned that networking is extremely imoprtant in the business world and that it goes beyond just chit-chatting on Facebook and Myspace.

The Gallery Tour

I attended the gallery tour just yesterday and to be honest, i was a bit bored. I suppose photography just isn’t my thing. The photographs were nice though but i just got bored hearing the person who was giving the tour talk. It was also pretty short and the lady( sorry i don’t remember her name) asked us about what kind of emotions we were sensing from the photos. She also told us about this photograph where the boat was half cut off and she explained it was to make the person looking feel like they would be able to walk into the boat.

There was another photograph actually, it looked like bodies in a desert and at first i thought i was looking at four people’s heads. but then as she was explaining it, i realized it was people’s butts. She showed another photograph but i didn’t really get to see it that well because there was a huge crowd in front of me. So i missed her explanation to it as well.

So I hope this is good. this week has been pretty tough. 3 exams and 2 essay assignments. I am so happy its all over-_-

Baruch is BORING !!

This blog is unrelated to academic topics and I do not mind that it may not be considered a valid blog counted for the 7 blogs we need to do. I simply wish to state my opinions about Baruch in this blog.

Baruch is BORING !! Well, to me anyways. The food is fine, there are a variety of stores around us, I just hate spending money every day for food.

As for the student life … where’s the parties? =[ I don’t mind if I don’t go to any, but I would at least like to be informed, so at least I can say that I CHOSE not to go or CHOSE to be bored.

I haven’t even joined one club yet and its all because of CALCULUS !! Every Thursday during Club Hours I’m doing homework instead of having fun. Although I’m sure many other students in this class MAY be doing the same. I guess I should just finish the homework the night before then but this happened the last 4-5 Thursdays. The student game lounge is horrible. It’s filled with ping-pong nerds and pool hogs. None of the computers in the school have sound or a head phone slot. And I would never even try the poker table behind the game lounge.

But for those students who are having a blast !! Please, inform me !! I’m dying here.

Contact me at the typical email for all Baruch students.

Gallery Tour 10/06/09

Today I attended the Gallery Tour at the 22nd ST building. It was a nice experience but we were only taken to about three or four pieces and our group was so large that I could barely hear or see the gallery director as she gave us the tour. The theme of the exposition was nature and many of the other works of art that I saw were beautiful although I prefer abstract art.

I think this particular workshop took me out of my comfort zone because the atmosphere was very laid-back and we couldn’t really walk around and look at anything independently. I would recommend the Gallery Tour to anyone who enjoys art and learning about art, specifically this one which was mostly photographs.

I don’t feel as though I learned anything from this workshop other than the fact that Baruch has an actual art gallery and it was nice that I could take part in this workshop.
