2nd Enrichment Workshop

The second enrichment workshop that I attended was the Academic Enrichment  workshop. I attended the Freshman Open House 2009 – Get a Fresh Start!. At first, the workshop didn’t have much people but as time progressed, the workshop was bombarded with people everywhere. Since a lot of people attended, the workshop didn’t continue. Although there was a lot of people, it led me to my next workshop, Student Life.

Academic Enrichment Workshop

On October 15, I attended an academic workshop in the library called Database Survival, and it was all about ways we can access the database Baruch offers. We also learned about the library, and how to find books online. However, I am no stranger to online databases. Throughout high school, we were required to write research papers, and so we had two workshops about using online databases. I already know how to use the New York Public Library database, and now I know how to use the Baruch one, which will come in handy seeing as I have a reseach paper due for English soon.

The speaker was a little nervous, however, and he had to stop a few times and correct himself. There were tons of freshmen there, so that was probably why he was a little nervous. But it was a good experience. I learned plenty about the functions of Baruch’s online database. Hopefully everything will stick!

Community Service

Last Thursday I donated two cans of tuna and a can of black beans for the food drive. This is was an enriching experience, and it reminded of me of my time spent at Project Hospitality, a soup kitchen/food pantry for the homeless and underpriveldged of Staten Island. I remembered how I used to sort through tons of cans of food and how I had to set them up in the food pantry. I remember sorting through cans of caviar that the wealthier people had donated. Which homeless person eats caviar?

Overall, it was rewarding to give back to the community. I definately will participiate in future food drives and the like.

Club Fair/Student Life

This was held in the gym. I went with Jordan and some classmates. All the clubs had their own station and were giving away stuff and information about their clubs. I didnt sign up for any clubs because im not ready yet but the fair was good because it explained alot things.

Big Panel Presentation & Career Forum

This was my first workshop, so i had no idea what was going on. It was held in the 14th floor and people gave  speeches about career plans. My classmates and I didnt have the proper attire as we were supposed to have dress clothes on. The advisers spoke about resumes and other job qualities people should have. I learned some new things so it was helpful.

Art Gallery Tour 10/18

On October 18, I went to the BARUCH Art Gallery tour and i saw some interesting art. The art there was very abstract and unique. The lady or the tour guide was showing us around and explained quite a few pieces. In my opinion there was a few pieces that looked horrible or didnt even count as art. But then there was a few other ones that i really enjoyed. Overall it wasn’t that bad.

Zainab’s post: Club Fair

The club fair was so long ago, but I do remember helping out at the USG stand. I didn’t get to walk around as much as I hoped to but did get to check out a few clubs that looked interesting. I also got to bond with the Student Government crew and learn the ropes of Baruch politics. It turns out that a lot of students (especially freshmen) were interested in joining and going to the Philly trip (which has been postponed, but is still happening). Overall, it was the lively environment that I enjoyed–the kind that’s lacking at Baruch.

Art at baruch

Today I went to the art workshop at the art gallery of Baruch. They showed a collection of abstract artwork by Mercedes Matters. Since most of the art work are abstract arts, I did not understand what the artist is trying to convey to the viewers. Even though the lady explain the pieces that she show us, things she point out does not look like what she say it is.

FOOD DRIVE

My classmates and I decided to participate on the food drive and send in some cans. I had a couple of cans, Leo had a bunch, Michael and Abhi also had a few. It was not that bad. The box that we put it in was nicely decorated and had alot of cans inside, which was good to see people participate. We also took pictures.

Food Drive

The other day, a bunch of us donated canned food to the food drive. I felt good knowing that I could help others out with a simple can of food that we take for granted.
