Stress and Anxiety

This workshop was interesting. I went to it on November 3rd.  It was in the same room I was in on the first day of school. Anyway,  in this workshop we learned different methods to relieve stress. It was fun. I was with a couple of friends so it was kind of hard to concentrate, but we were given a bunch of papers that explained what to do to relieve stress. The first thing we did was play around with a raisen. Everyone that attended was given a raisen and we were told to hold it, observe it, and than we were asked to use our senses to identify the raisen. I dont know I didn’t get much out of this section of the workshop. All I know is we got to eat the raisen after playing around with it for like 5 minutes. The next section was a bit more interesting though. We were taught various excercises/ stretches we could do to help relieve stress in the body. I liked this part the most of the workshop. After we had a short discussion about what we learned and that was it.

Impression Management

This workkshop was on November 5, 2009.  It was pretty long to be honest, but it was fun. It was all about making a good first impression. They guy in the front talked about how to be aware of your hand gestures and facial expression when meeting people. These will effect the way people will view you.  He went on to talk about how to present yourself in a job interview. The only thing is that all of these things I have already been told so I did not walk away learning anything new. At first I kept to myself and when he asked questions I would keep to myself, but by the end of it I tried to make an “impression”. He remembered my name by the end of it though so I think I did well. I reintroduced myself to the presenter at the end to leave with a good expression. After I went and introduced myself I saw a bunch of people go and introduce themselves to him too.  It was o.k. in my opinoin and if there was another workshop about the same subject i probrably would go.

Basic Interview Skills and Techniques Workshop

On October 29, 2009 I attended the Basic Interviewing Techniques Workshop. When I walked in, I was given a packet that encluded an agenda and the basic outline of the presentation. A lady spoke to us about interviewing strategies that would increase of chances of being hired. I learned what to do before an interview, the day of the interview, during the interview, and after the interview. I also learned how one should prepare a personal pitch, which is a brief introduction that informs the employer on our strengths and skills. Everyone did an exercise where we had to come up with our own personal pitch and share with the people around us. During this workshop, I learned what kind of questions would be asked by the employers and I found that very helpful. This workshop was informative, but I found it to be quite boring because the lady didn’t really engage me into her presentation. It also conflicted with my class schedule. However, I still saw it as a benefit that I attended this workshop because it will definitely help me in the future.

Flyers for Food Drive

Flyers-Global/Community Awareness

Nov. 9, 2009

I’ve made flyers for my Global/Community Awareness workshop credit. I worked with Jason Torkian to find a few pictures to put together, making the flyer. We went around the building posting them on the bulletin boards, and donated some pasta to the food drive; we gave them to Winnie, our peer mentor. I think that donating food for those who have none is important and sincere. Even though times are tough right now, people still have the heart to try and give whatever they have. I’ve got it pretty good and still nag about the little things I see and do not have. Even though I may not know what it feels like to have nothing, I should appreciate what I have that others don’t.

Career Exploration: Pursuing Your Career

Pursuing Your Career – Career Exploration.

Nov. 3, 2009

I was expecting a relatively huge group of students, but it was actually a very small group.

This workshop was a powerpoint lecture that was meant to encourage students to find a career having to do with their personal values and interests. We found out what jobs were suited towards our individual persons through our priorities, whether it was more money, helping others, job security, management, more family time, own schedule, etc. Some of the things in the workshop was common sense. If I wanted to learn something different, I probably should have chosen a different workshop under Career Exploration. We were also reminded about registering for classes, which is in a few days now. Overall, this workshop was good; there was interaction between the lecturer and the students.

Yay For Food

On Thursday, I attended this “Networking Luncheon” sponsored by soo many of Baruch’s business clubs (including ASCEND, NABA, WIB, GK, PES, VITA). I didn’t realize how many different business clubs Baruch really has. It got me thinking that, although there are so many groups, they all fight for the same club hour time slot. So even if there were two awesome business events I (or anyone) wanted to go, it’s not possible to go to both! What a shame. During the middle of the event, each club representative went to talk about their club briefly, and to advertise their next event. To me, it sounded like every club was practically the same, except some had fees higher than others, and some had GPA requirements. So how can I find a student organization that knows to set itself apart?

Anyway, I went to this event expecting and knowing that it would have some representatives from large corporations (such as Deloitte and PwC). Sadly to say, many students were expecting recruiters to be there. Deadlines for spring internships have already passed (so obviously they weren’t aware of what they were doing…) It was just a bunch of young representatives from companies wanting to share their experiences…

I spoke to two accountants from Deloitte, just so I can get a feel of what that company offers (besides a competitive career), and it seemed these two people (Josif and William, hah! I still remember, but I don’t know their last names, so I can’t find and thank them [bad move on my part]). Both were Baruch graduates so it made me really positive about life after graduation. In all honesty though, accounting sounded REALLY boring.

Moving along, I was able to exchange a few words from a PwC employee, who was also a Baruch grad (yet I can’t remember her name). She was told to give a little speech after each club’s mini-intro. Her speech was very motivating because she spoke of how she was always hard-working, and how she was president as ASCEND. The most important thing she said was to be genuine. I can’t agree more. It seems like college forces people to not be themselves, or to show only a polite side so no one gets to really know each other. Well, I don’t really see a point in lying (like not being yourself to others) or even during an interview because it is apparent, and it’s no fun.

I didn’t get a chance to speak with other representatives, but it was a learning I experience. I’m trying to work on my networking skills… and this was just one step!

Oh, as an end note, the food was great. There was veggie-sushi and sandwiches. I made myself coffee, wheeee. It was great. This woman said I was awesome for making coffee with one hand. (She was a Becker CPA review rep.) Oh yeah, we also had to be in business attire, which goes against the whole be yourself thing, but that’s a rant for another time.

Community-Global Awareness

For my community-global awarness workshop, I went on the annual walk for Breast Cancer around central park On October 18th. I did this walk a few years ago with my sister and her job, around a different park in new rochelle, about 4-5 years ago. I was told about this years location around central park by my club (Black Students Union) secretary. I had missed the blood drive, which I was going to use as my global awareness workshop, but when this opportunity came along I felt that it would be just as good of a cause. We met up about 8 oclock and walked 72nd street to 110th st from the east side, then back down to 72nd st on the westside. It was a pretty long walk, but for a good cause. Breast cancer has definetly become a big issue among women, I dont personally know anyone with breast cancer, but I still am aware of the amount of deaths it causes. I also found it interesting how me joining a club helped me to find a different outlet to fulfill my requirement.

Fresh Start Workshop

So on September 17th I went to my first workshop. It was a workshop for freshman at the Center for Academic Advisement.  When I arrived there was an overload of people. They were signing freshmans planners, but they were not giving a meeting or what ever was intentionally planned because there were so many people. It was like a free event for some people. I however actually got to attend the meeting that they orignally had scheduled by some stroke of luck. I went into a small room and was asked if i wanted to listen to what they were originally going to tell everyone. Of course I took up the offer.  We were seated on a small table, about 6 of us I think including myself, and we were told about all the requirements Baruch has. It was in depth talk about I guess the prerequisites as we move through our education.  This woman talked to us about the different Tiers in Baruch and also about the various credits and what steps we need to go through to earn them. The woman told us about all of the prerequisites and also about the major specific courses that we would have to attend if we wanted to join the business school or the school for public affairs. I found the whole meeting to be a great use of my time. It was very informative and I walked away knowing a bit more of the structure of Baruch. It took the complicated mess that is Baruchs Tiers and made sense of it.

writing center- academic enrichment workshop

i attended the writing workshop many times to utalize the services baruch offers. i found the writing center extremely helpful in correcting and teaching a student errors that can be found in a paper. sitting down with a writing specialist for 50 min is very worthwhile as they go over the paper with you and fix and teach you about so many different things that perfects your paper and teaches you what to do for next time. i mean its free and your getting your paper corrected and looked over by a proffesional so why not? its services liek these that people should take advanatge because its very helpful and puts you ahead of the game. i found it very helpful and i highly reccommend it for anyone that hasnt gone already to go check it out.

club fair- student life workshop

ok so on 9/24/09  i attended the club fair at the gym, this was pretty cool because it was filled with so many booths offering so many clubs that baruch has to offer. coming in as a new freshman, i  found this workshop really exciting and helpful because when your new you dont really know whats going on so by attending this workshop i expanded my options of joining a club on my free time and having something to do. i also appreciated knowing about all the different clubs baruch had to offer so i am aware of the information when i may need it. and yes this was PACKED with people but i still got through and fulfilled my intended expectation of this workshop. on an endnote it was pretty cool and fun.
