blood drive

i visited the blood drive center and signed up to give blood, waiting there for your turn to come up is a great feeling, because you think about all the possible lives you may save by giving a little of your blood. this is really important because i feel like you get into the habit of giving back to the community in one way or another. this was a brave act to do and even though it looks uncomfortable, going forward with the thought of the lives that may be saved because you took a few minutes out of your time to give your blood is a feeling that is amazing and cannot be taken away.

Annual Student Services Fair Fall ’09

On Tuesday, 10/13/09, I went with my friends to a workshop I didn’t know was being held. It was the Annual Student Services Fair and it was pretty familiar to the Club Fair, except this workshop informed us about the different offices at Baruch, such as the Health Office or the Bursar Office. I walked around to the different tables and spoke to a lot of people and asked a lot of questions. We also had to carry around a small card and have it hole-punched in order to take part in a raffle. I thought it was a pretty good experience because I discovered offices that I could go to for help if I needed to in the future and by asking questions, I really learned a lot about the different things that Baruch had. It was also a bonding experience because I traveled in a group from each table and we all asked questions and stuck together. I also felt like this workshop was a lot more organized because the staff signed our books only if we had gone to at least 10 of the many tables, which meant that they wanted us to go around the entire room and be informed. There was also a raffle at 1:30 PM where they picked out our hole-punched cards with names on them and gave out prizes. I won a Baruch t-shirt so it was definitely a memorable experience.

Club Fair – Student Life

On 09/24/09, I went to the Club Fair which was held in the gymnasium around 12:30 PM to check out the different clubs that were available to me at Baruch College. I arrived there earlier than expected, so not many of the stands had representatives but there were a lot of tables with club names on them. After everything had been set up, I walked around to different tables and talked to someone from USG who gave me a brief idea about what USG was about. I felt like the Club Fair was very useful for me because I became aware of what types of clubs Baruch offered and which ones would be of interest to me. Although I don’t think I’ll be joining any clubs until after I finish attending all my required workshops, it was nice to have an idea of what I could join later this year. I found a few clubs that I was definitely interested in as well. I also felt like this workshop was a huge improvement from Freshmen Reception because this one was held in a place where a lot of students could fit and walk around.

Student Life Workshop

Student Services Fair- Student Life

Oct 13, 2009

The goal of this workshop is to inform the freshmen about the student services available at Baruch to make their college life easier. I went to this workshop to complete my 3rd out of the 6th required workshops . I expected this workshop to be quick and easy, as it was. The room was packed with freshman going from booth to booth getting a card hole-punched 10 times to complete the workshop. I learned about all the student services at Baruch and where they were located. There were more services available than I had imagined. I will be sure to use some of them as I continue my college career.

Club Fair ’09

I was really excited to go to the Club fair, I have a few friends that are upperclassmen in Baruch that told me about it, and how fun it is, and the perfomances that go on. I signed up for The Black Students Union Club, I have made a few new friends, and most of them are not from where I am (the bronx). I plan on being really active in the club, they throw parties, have a fashion show, spoken word nights (poetry) but they also do charity work, which I find great because they pride themselves on giving back, as well allow members to have an input on what goes on…

Back to the club fair, I thought it was good that they had this, because many incoming freshman probably are not even aware of all the clubs that Baruch has to offer, and each group does its own thing, and have people with common interest, like BSU, for me has people with the same interest as me, even though the name of the club is BLACK student union, the dont only have Black students in it. Each club at the club fair definetly is integrated, and I think they each give endless possibilities for networkin in the future.

Academic Enrichment Workshop

Workshop Goal: Learn the different opportunities that Baruch has to offer and how to improve yourself as a better student.

I chose to attend the Freshman Reception 09, because I thought it would be a great way to learn about the opportunities Baruch has for me. This particular program however did not take me outside my comfort zone, because the entire workshop was students getting their planners signed.

I had high expectations for this workshop. I thought it would be interesting, but when I got there, it was packed with students. I just got my planner signed and left. I did not know they were giving out folders, because they ran out. I would not recommend this workshop to another student because it was not very helpful. Maybe next year it will better. From this experience I have learned that not every workshop will be the way I want it to be, but hopefully in the future other workshops will be more interesting and engaging.

Managing Relationships in College

Managing Relationships in College

October 8, 2009

The goal of the workshop was to educate the freshman how to “manage relationships.”

I went to this workshop to fulfill my 2nd out of 6 total workshops needed as a freshman.

I expected this workshop to be in a larger room, and it was (multi-purpose room). I knew it would be packed with freshman trying to get their workshops over with. The workshop was not as boring as I had thought it would have been, so  I guess it was a successful one.

What I’ve learned from this workshop was to really start meeting new people, the more the better. Relationships are extremely important no matter what kind it is, as long as it’s a positive one. They can lead to internships, new partners (boyfriends/girlfriends), business relationships, etc. Relationships with professors can help make learning easier, and if you were to ask for a letter of recommendation, they would write it much better because they know you better. Meeting upper-classmen can help prepare you for the road ahead with tips and advice. After they graduate and find a job, they may even help you get an internship or recommendation.

I’ve had an internship this summer and I think it’s a head start for me because I’ve met so many important people in that company including the CEO. Hopefully this helps me after I graduate.

Academic Enrichment Workshop

I went to my first workshop last Thursday, Freshmen Reception. Before I actually went, I had the idea that this workshop would sort of be a “meeting” where freshmen students sat in a lecture hall and had a representative speak to us about the importances of freshman year; however, it was the opposite. The reception was really crowded and stuffy with a bunch of freshmen trying to get their books signed and grab a folder. I didn’t get a folder because it all ran out so I’m not even sure what the papers inside the folder were about.

So my expectations of this workshop being a sort of welcoming reception was incorrect but I hope this week’s workshop will be a little more organized and beneficial. My first impression of a Freshmen Seminar workshop wasn’t exactly great so I hope the future workshops will be completely different from last week’s and then maybe I’ll have something positive to write about in my future blogs.

Academic Enrichment Workshop

I went to this workshop to sort of “knock out” one of my mandetory workshops, but also I was generally trying to find some sort of guidance on how to go through college. The worst part is when I got to the room it was a bunch of people ambushing to get their planners signed, but I still dont feel I recieved that much information on deciding a major/ minor. I know it depends mostly on me but I also want a little help to see what would work best with what I am interested in. I just hope I stay motivated, and can make it through these four years because I realize just like that crowd in the office, its easy to get pushed to the back and ignored, and kind of get knocked off course…

College is really different I love the freedom, but the thing is highschool we had guidance counselors, that I really appreciate now that I finished with highschool. But I went to the Center of Academic advisement already for a question about a few classes, and they were pretty vague with the answers, they kind of just left me with a you will get through it on your own attitude. It is liek the 3rd or 4th week of school I think I hae finally gotten my wake up call…

Academic Enrichment Workshop

Get a Fresh Start – Academic Enrichment

September 17th, 2009

The goal of the workshop is to find out how to choose our majors and minors.

I went because I needed to fulfill my attendance of 6 mandatory freshman workshops as well as to attain guidance on how to complete college.

I expected the workshop to be in a room or lecture hall where a speaker would talk to us about choosing our majors and minors as well as the process to do this. What really happened was a big mess in the little Academic Advisement Center room, where I barely found out about anything.

I learned that college really is a dog eat dog world and only those on top of their game win. I need to find out how to do things on my own because everything is a mess, and whoever has real advise that can actually guide me through the process of completing my 4 years of college is my savior.
