5th workshop-Gallery tour

I went to the gallery yesterday, Nov. 17th. It was about the American painter Mercedes Matter’s lifetime paintings. When she was 6 years old, she was able to draw her self-portrait, and from then on her talent of drawing was built. A memorable drawing of a naked girl impressed me a lot because that was the only one I could really understand and recognize. The color and style portrayed the girl vividly. When she became a adult, her drawing style had tended to more abstract than before. I realized she liked to draw the different shapes, such as triangles, squares and circles. Each drawing was interwined in different ways and led the viewers to find the clues. Actually I really have no idea about these abstract images. However,  just as the tour guide said, we didn’t have to know what exactly the drawings were, but we should tried to think what the meaning of the paintings expressed. Mercedes Matter tries to communicate with people about her ideas and minds through the drawings. For instance, when she was young, her painting mainly portrayed the female image which full of youth and vitality. After she grown up, her drawings changed to portray the daily life, such as the table, sky, landscape, etc. She used colors to embellish everything in detail. In her later years, the drawings were light in color and shapes were much simpler. They seemed like to say that she was satisfied with everything she had and simpleness was the best. The gallery tour is really meaningful and also let me know further about the successful abstact painter Mercedes Matter.
