Gallery Tour Mercedes Matter

We spent the whole time there waiting on line even when we arrived early and on time for the exhibit. When we finally got admitted in, we have to leave right away for class. They made up put our bags and coats on a rack and sign in to the gallery. We walked around with the guide discussing the early and later work of Mercedes Matters. The subjects are the same in the whole gallery:tables, fruits, triangles and colors and overall the whole thing was pretty dull and wasn’t worth the long wait it took to get inside. There’s not much to say about the tour except, thankfully it was short and I was only a bit late to class.

Resume Writing Workshop

I went to the workshop after lunch and there was a sign hanging at the meeting room telling us to go to another room. Upon my arrival, the room inside was already full of people and there were more outside who couldn’t get inside. The person conducting the session asked if the people in the room if they had signed up and they said no. She then made them leave and asked the people outside if they had signed up for the workshop. We said yes, gave her our name and went in.

She gave us a packet of paper and our first activity was to fill out what is our strongest personality point for an activity we consider worthy to be on our resume. We then moved on to looking at the general outline of an resume and the teacher talked about the difference between putting down “conversational” language and “fluency” in a language as part of our skill set. We then looked at sample cover letters and thank you notes. Afterwards we had to fill out a survey that asked us if enjoyed the session and why. Overall it wasn’t a bad experience but I wished she had also some sample resumes to show us so we can get a feel of what’s a good resume and what was a bad resume.

Joseph O’Connor

I missed the reception that took place before the reading and was kind of disappointed. I like looking forward to free food. I thought the women who was introducing Mr. O’Connor was his wife because I thought that when she said “my husband” she was referring to O’Connor.

O’Connor is a funny man, telling jokes to get the audience’s attention and his readings are very insightful and they appeal to listeners of all ages. I especially like his lament on his love for Patty Smith and her works of music. We had to sit on the floor because all the seats were taken upon our arrival. O’Connor was a funny man and it shows in the way he reads his essays and writing and he made interacting with the audience comfortable and it was an enjoyable evening.

Club Fair

The title of this workshop is “Club Fair”. It occurred on September 24, 2009 in the Basement. The purpose of this workshop was to help Baruch students become aware of the various clubs available at Baruch. This fair (workshop) was really exciting and important. I learned of the different groups I can be part of and how to really be part of our Baruch community. There were so many clubs that attracted my attention that I didn’t know which ones that I really liked. I can tell that many people had fun, because they were constantly moving from different club presentations.  It is evident that the groups used a lot of time and work to put the whole fair together. There were refreshments from different cultures. Personally, I recall best from the Thai ice tea which was really delicious.

The club fair was really helpful to me. First, it gave me an opportunity to meet new people and make more friends. Furthermore, it gave us students a deeper knowledge of how to be part of Baruch. I believe that my friends who have never attended a club fair should attend. The only thing that was a hassle was that the club was really crowded and the clubs had to accommodate the limited space. But aren’t all fairs crowded? I really enjoyed the fair and I’m sure everyone else had a splendid time as well.

Changing America: Sonia Sotomayor

The title of my workshop is “Changing America Sonia Sotomayor”. This workshop was on September 22, 2009 in room 7-150 from 12:45 to 2:00 pm. The main goal of this workshop was to inform us of a great event that has taken place in America and its significance. This event involves a great Latin America lady, Sotomayor, who has been chosen to become a Supreme Court Justice. Her appointment to office marked a century where qualified people from any background can become someone great in America.  It signifies how America is eventually leaving a period of discrimination.

I learned a great deal from this workshop. I was able to feel the struggles that women and other minorities had to achieve equality in America. I respect their effort and success.  From this workshop, I learn to respect the rights that I possess. I acknowledge that it is because of these women in history that helped made America a better country for the future ancestors like me.

I would definitely introduce this workshop to my friends. There are great orators who can strike inspiration in you. I am enlightened from this workshop and I hope that my friends can also share my wonderful experience.

I selected this workshop, because my friends wanted to go. I felt that it would be interesting to attend a workshop with your friends. This workshop was out of my comfort zone, because it was rather long. And that day, I was really hungry. But overall, the experience was splendid.

Freshmen Reception

The title of my workshop is “Freshmen Reception”. It occurred on September 17, 2009 at 12:45 in room 5-215. The main objective of this workshop was to help the incoming freshmen understand the academic requirements that they need to fulfill in order for them to get their degrees. Personally, I feel that this workshop is greatly useful for the freshmen (including me), because it introduces us to our responsibilities in this school.  I really liked how the staffs were nice and understanding. The staffs would first ask us to introduce ourselves and then they would explain their agendas. Most importantly, there were refreshments that helped keep us concentrated.

I love this workshop and I would definitely introduce this workshop to a freshman. This workshop will greatly help this freshman understand how he/she needs to get his/her degree. This aspect of the workshop is very important.  I took something very special from this workshop: friendship. I met new friends from this workshop and they always help me out when I most need it. This workshop did not take me out of my comfort zone. This workshop was right across from my class room and it was very quick.

Student Service Fair

One word. Packed. There was a lot of people running around to get the holes punched in their paper. There was some rude people(students) there. They need to learn to say “excuse me”. Other than that the fair was pretty interesting. I got a lot of useful information that I didn’t know before.

Gallery Tour

The gallery tour was boring. Personally arts really isn’t my thing. Everyone around me seem to also find it very boring. We walked around looking at pictures in what seem like a little maze. As it ended we had to get our books signed. The line was so long it took forever to get out. A lady there was also pretty rude. Finally we left and a nice security guard was selling chocolate. It was the only highlight of the day.

Freshman Reception

For the academic enrichment, I choose to attend the freshman reception on September 17, 2009. This workshop was very helpful because it gave me information on the on the requirements for the different schools in Baruch College. I found it very helpful that they have their doors open for students to enter and ask questions not only about academics but about any other problems they might be encountering. I feel that I was able to learn useful that I will eventually use throughout my college experience at Baruch.

Changing America

For my community-global awareness, I decided to participate in a workshop entitled “Changing America” on September 22, 2009. This was a very interesting workshop where the speakers spoke about the impact of supreme court judge Sonia Sotomayor. They give information on how she strived to become the first latino in the supreme court and the same way as Blacks look at Obama, Latinos look at Sotomayor in the same way. I found this workshop to be every interesting, the speakers gave some informative points during the workshop, that caused me to think more about race in the United States. This workshop touched upon a touchy subject, which is the matter of race in the United States and whether or not racism is still a factor in areas such as services, jobs, promotions, etc. I enjoyed this workshop and is surpassed my expectations.
