I attended the “Homosexuality and Religion” workshop. The first part was a panel of religious leaders from NYC talking about homosexuality and how it doesn’t necessarily conflict with religion. The Jewish, Catholic, and a Protestant faiths were represented and they all gave descriptions of their churches, their interpretationof LGBT issues in in the Bible and the Torah. They answered questions from the moderators and then opened the floor up for discussion. The second part was a presented by the president of the LGBT group at Baruch and the LGBT counselor at Baruch. They talked about the resources offered at Baruch for those students and the availability of help when someone feels uncomfortable for some reason. They also discussed tolerance and acceptance at a school like Baruch where there are many cultures and beliefs about homosexuality and religion. Overall it was a pretty informative workshop, and if there were any people that were homophobic, perhaps it allowed tolerance, if not acceptance.
