I also agree with this anecdote of Marc Dyu. There were too many people there, so I had to cut the line and receive the information. It was share chaos. I think the best part of that workshop was the lemonade and cookies. Never got a chance to learn much because of the enclave of college freshmans’ eager to receive this information also.
Small Talk
This is yet another workshop that i attended with my buddy Mark Dyu. We are like day and night (literally). However, I also learned how “small talk” is a vital attribute that many student lack. I sharped my skills in this workshop by learned certain topic I can hit on. One of the mot common topic you can carry on when having small talk is current events.
Student Life
I went to the club fair on sept 28. I thought it was ok. I looked up clubs online first and was hoping to see at least one of the russian clubs listed on the website. Alas they werent there but I wasnt surprised because even when I formed a russian club at my high school it was like pulling teeth to try to get members to come. I dont know why since asians showed up to their club. I saw a lot of interesting clubs but with my swimming I barely have time for them.
Global-Community Awareness
About a month or so ago, I helped volunteer for a Bazaar at my local church, which was to help fund for missions in Kenya / Africa. It was such a great time, selling baked goods, sandwiches, and other foods, knowing that every penny goes to a good cause. I learned that in Kenya, there are many children that do not even have shoes, or even shelter, and have to go through every day with dirty water. This experience opened up my eyes, and we should all try to pitch in to help this cause, such as donating for charities or directly helping them out. Many of my friends over the past summer also went to Kenya and did help out directly, and that was a great feeling knowing.
Fall Blood Drive
I attended the Fall Blood Drive. It was the first time I ever donated blood and I was a little scared at first. The wait to donate blood seemed like forever, but when it was finally my turn to donate, all my nerves disappeared. I knew it was for a good cause and I was very proud to be able to get a chance to donate blood. I met great people while I was there and it’s an experience I’m never going to forget. I definitely encourage others to donate blood because it really makes you feel like you’ve done something with yourself to help others. It makes you feel very good and just refreshed.
Impressions Managements
I attended a workshop called Impressions Managements. It was held by the STARR career development center. It basically taught us about first impressions when it comes to getting jobs and what not. It told us what we should do at interviews and how we should act. First impressions are the most important. I learned a lot from this workshop. It really made me think about how I should act when I go on an interview for a job regardless what the job may be. I also learned that although I can make a great first impression, other things, such as things about me that may be on the internet , can affect my chances of getting a job. You have to be careful with what you post up on the internet because everyone can see it, even people you might not think will ever see it, such as your potential future employer. This workshop was very helpful.
Stress & Anxiety Workshop
I attended a personal enrichment workshop about stress and anxiety. It tried to explain to us how to decrease our stress and anxiety. We went through a little meditation to help relax us and I really enjoyed it. We also went through something called introspection which is when you describe something to the fullest. They had us fully describe a raisin. It was quite interesting. I enjoyed the workshop and hope to use what I learned in this workshop to help me if I’m ever stressed in the future.
Global Community Awareness
I attended a Global Awareness workshop on September 22nd, and t was all about the new Supreme Court justice, Sonia Sotomayor. This workshop was very informative as it gave much further insight to Sotomayor as a person by describing the several challenges she had to overcome on her way to becoming part of the Supreme Court; all of which were expressed by three guest speakers. The major issues they covered were the biases that Sotomayor had to overcome, of both sex and race, and what is expected of her as a Supreme court justice. This workshop was very informative as it opened my eyes as to how much racial and sexual bias plays a part in government even to this day, a stark realization that was brought upon thanks to this workshop.
