Arts at Baruch Workshop 11/03

I attended an Arts at Baruch workshop on the 3rd of November at the Mishkin gallery. The tour guide split us up into smaller groups and told us about the artist of Baruch’s art gallery and about her paintings. The paintings were very abstact and colorful. The tour guide told us many facts about the artist’s life and why she chose to paint the way she did; she pointed out a lot of details about the paintings themselves. I personally do not like abstract art but the tour guide made it sound somewhat interesting nonetheless. The tour itself was not very long.

Student life -meet the greeks

As an incoming freshman , it was very important to me to take part in a student life. I didnt want to be a comuter student with out any social life. The first month of classes, I began to rush for a sorority “Theta phi Gamma,” I went to one event which was a workshop called Meet the Greeks, I thought it was somewhat boring because i did not care when each sorority was established, but it did show me the benificiency to be in one. In the end, I realized that soririty isnt for me .

Arts at baruch

I attended to the Arts at Baruch enrichment workshop in the Mishkin Gallery. The gallery was small and not that exciting; however, it had a great variety of interesting photographs. The workshop apealed to me , because I myself love photogrophy and apriciate the beauty of a moment that a camera can capture so well. In this gallery the theme of the photograpsy was nature and landscape which is a wonderfull genre of photography.

Freshman Reception 9/17

On this freshman reception during the beginning of the school year, I did not know what to expect. What I did see were many many freshmen all crowded in the reception room. They ran out of folders, so they didn’t have all the packets for everyone. They also served free cookies and drinks, but it was so crowded I couldn’t get any. I received a couple of fliers that told me useful information however, and I guess those were the positive things. They need to work on the amount of people that come to these receptions, and I guess they did that with some of the sign-up requirement workshops that are available.

Personal Enrichment 11/5

I attended the “Homosexuality and Religion” workshop. The first part was a  panel of religious leaders from NYC talking about homosexuality and how it doesn’t necessarily conflict with religion. The Jewish, Catholic, and a Protestant faiths were represented and they all gave descriptions of their churches, their interpretationof LGBT issues in in the Bible and the Torah. They answered questions from the moderators and then opened the floor up for discussion. The second part was a presented by the president of the LGBT group at Baruch and the LGBT counselor at Baruch. They talked about the resources offered at Baruch for those students and the availability of help when someone feels uncomfortable for some reason. They also discussed tolerance and acceptance at a school like Baruch where there are many cultures and beliefs about homosexuality and religion. Overall it was a pretty informative workshop, and if there were any people that were homophobic, perhaps it allowed tolerance, if not acceptance.

Student Services Fair

A few weeks ago I attended the Student Services Fair. What I thought was pretty clever on the coordinators part was that if we wanted our sheet signed, we had to get this sheet of paper holepunched 9 times and we’d do that by visiting each table so in a way we were forced to engage in the fair. The only two issues were that 1. a lot of the people who had questions were rushed by people who just wanted to hurry on up and get their sheet signed, and 2. a lot of the information didn’t really apply to freshman and definitely was more useful to upperclassmen. I did learn about the STARR career development center which sounds pretty cool and really helpful though. I wouldn’t really recommend the fair to anyone who has real questions on these services as they may get more help and better answers by going to each of these places individually, so they don’t get rushed by the herd.

Small Talk

I went to the Career Exploration workshop entitled “Small Talk”  last week and it pretty much was exactly how it sounded. The speaker was just talking about the importance of small talk in business since it showed a quick glimpse of your personality, especially that you’re sociable, and was a very casual way of aquainting with people. Making small talk, the speaker said, can sometimes make or break the situation since someone who will show the effort to strike up a small conversation will stand out in the minds of employers, coworkers, and customers more than someone who is quiet and bland. The workshop was actually pretty insightful and gave good examples of the importance of small talk and how to do it. I’d recommend this workshop to others.
