I attended this workship back in September 30th so I thought my memory on the workshop might be a bit hazy, but it turns out I remember it really clearly especially since today in Philosophy class we discussed the issue of morality, which made me remember the ethics workshop. The ethics workshop itself was really interesting. The issue of ethics itself, which deals with morality, is already a really interesting topic and I think that the speaker did a great job at presenting it to the audience in a way that was easy to understood. The ethics workshop taught that morality is sometimes relative- that there is no absolute right or wrong answer and everything isn’t black and white. The way we view morality depends heavily on the environment that we were brought up in and is influenced by our parents, friends, society, etc. so it’s important to understand where others are coming from and where we come from when we make ethical choices. What’s interesting to me though is that today in my philosophy class, my teacher argued that morality is not relative; that it is in fact black and white. That’s a whole another topic though, and I suggest that if anyone attends this workshop (which was really interesting), that they also hear the counterargument and read up on why there is absolute right and wrongs in ethics. It’s important to get both sides of the picture.
Career Exploration 11/04
I went to the basic interviewing techniques session. There was only three other people in my group there so it was pretty comfortable. It was very basic and introductory like it said. I think it would probably be the most helpful for people who haven’t been to to a professional interview or had a professional job or internship. I pretty much knew all the things they were talking about, like how to dress, body language and etc. We had enough people in my group so that we all go to practice a very brief pitch to the moderator and she helped us improve on it or bring out better attributes. Overall, it was okay but I would recommend going to the advanced interviewing session the moderator told us about.
Personal Enrichment
I attended a Personal Enrichment workshop today dealing with Stress & Anxiety. It was held in the Multi-Purpose Room from 1-2 pm. The first thing we did was a breathing exercise. Since the instructor played it from his iPod, it was difficult to hear but I tried my best. Then they handed out a sheet describing some strategies for dealing with stress and also for communicating with others. There is what is called DEAR MAN which stands for Describe, Express, Assert, Reinforce, Mindful, Appear Confident, and Negotiate. These steps are basically approaches in which we should pitch our “problem” or “idea” to someone when we want them to understand and accept. The last thing we did was a relaxing exercise where we released stress from our entire body starting with our feet all the way up to our face. It really did work! So anytime I feel like I need to release some stress and anxiety I can do this exercises and carry on with my day.
Career Exploration
For my career exploration workshop I attended “small talk”. It was a workshop where we learned none other than how to make small talk or how the teacher kept saying it was learning how to “schmooze”. I dont know if i can change yet how I talk but I hope this class changed me in a little so in business I could make small talk with the customers in order to get them to buy goods.
Personal Enrichment Workshop
I attended the student services fair a few weeks ago and it taught me about the different parts of baruch that could be useful to me in the future. Like the student life center and the writing center which I would like to check out soon. I didnt mind the whole punch card idea because it made me look at more than just one thing and opened my options to look at all the different centers. I am happy I chose this workshop even though it was time consuming.
Academic Enrichment 10/13
I don’t think that the Student Services fair was the most helpful of things. Around half of the tables were things that most undergrads, especially freshmen, would not have to deal with or encountered for at least a year. I’m not sure if the fair is for graduate students also though. I also don’t necessarily think that the Fair is the best way to get the requirement fulfilled. There were way too many people for the number of relevant tables. And those were there mainly wanted the workshop sheet signed, so many people that had actual questions were rushed so that everyone could keep moving and holepunch their card.
