Basic Interviewing Workshop 10/29

I attended a Career Exploration workshop for Basic Interviewing on the 29th of October from 12:30 – 2:30 PM at Room 1-107. It was very informative and provided a lot of important information regarding job interviews. The speaker mentioned a lot of things that one should know before an interview, such as how to dress, how to introduce yourself, etc. Another thing the speaker emphasized is asking the interviewer questions, which I did not think was that necessary. I recommend this workshop to anybody who is nervous or unsure about their future job interviews. šŸ™‚

Academic Enrichment

The Freshmen Reception was supposed to be our first real workshop. The workshop was supposed to answer any questions we had about our first few days at Baruch and to provide an atmosphere where we could meet new people that we would be seeing for the next few years. The workshop ended up being overcrowded with students. We stood online for 30 min to get our passports signed while ironically meeting some people online with us.

Community- Global Awareness

During the Community Global awareness workshop the main issue was “Changing America – Sotomayor”. During the workshop three speakers (history teachers) spoke about the challenges of being a female, minority in an authoritative position. The first speaker focused on women and how they have progressed with still many issues present today like glass ceilings. The other speakers focused on minority groups making their way up to positions of authority despite there situations. This workshop provided a different perspective for meĀ on the cultural issues that minorities and women still face today.

Personal Enrichment Workshop

The Personal Enrichment Workshop that I attended was focused on “Managing Relations”. The speaker was a psychologist ( I think) and she mentioned all the different kinds of relathionsps that we’d experience in Baruch and how all our relationships will change and some will grow as time passes. She mentioned the importance of networking especially for business majors and the importance of “linked-in” and the STARR Career Center. We also learned that romantic/intimate relationships will be some of the most important relationships we’ll have to learn to manage especially for our future as well as for now. And theĀ importance of our family relationships and how we need to keep them strong despite so much else in ourlives like romance, school,Ā work, etc.

Arts at Baruch

On 10/13/09 I attended the Arts at Baruch workshop at the Mishkin Gallery. The director of the gallery showed us around in small groups. The gallery focused on photography and most of the works of art were donated by Baruch College alumni. The director explained to us how all the pieces tied in together in a central theme of nature. The photograph that caught my attention was Eustoma take by Tom Bary. It was a gorgeous black and white photograph of a close up view of a solitary flower that made me want to purchase a duplicate of the work of art and hang it up in my own room. I definitely be visiting the Mishkin gallery again soon!

Career Exploration

The “Internship and Goal Setting” workshop presented by the STARR Career center seemed to be the most informative workshop yet. During the workshop they presented us with little booklets that cover almost everything on how to intern and the entire process of where and how to begin and what to do to get to your ideal internship. The most important thing our was presenter said was to to visit the STARR center and sit with an adviser especially if we have any questions about internships and resumes. We discussed the different types of internships like paid vs unpaid, and the competition that comes with each internship, as well as the importance of networking and the “linked-in” website. I found this workshop incredibly important and useful especially with my business major.

Creating Your Own Major Workshop

This workshop on October 8th was creating your own major. At first, IĀ did not know what to expect as I was just following my friends into a workshop requirement, but I was shocked at the title of the workshop. How could someone create their own major? Well, this workshop helped me to figure out how to do so, and the exact processes in order to do so, such as getting certain amount of signatures from the deans, etc. or what class requirements you need. I found this very interesting that one could createĀ  their own major, such as the guest speaker, who was majoring in Beauty Marketing (if I recall correctly). She was studying marketing psychology and focussing on the beauty aspect of her field. I found this very helpful and informative.

Basic Interviewing Workshop

This workshop took place on 10/29. I found this workshop really interesting, and actually opened my eyes to things I never considered before. Such things include the cologne/perfume you wear, or the types of questions that interviewers asked. One question that stumped me the most was, “What are your weaknesses?” This workshop helped me figure out what to do when asked those questions, and how to prepare for what they have to deliver. Even though the workshop was pretty lengthy, it gave clear examples on the basic interviewing process, such as what attire to wear, what not to wear, what not to do, etc.

Student Life-Club Fair

On September 24, i attended the Baruch club fair. I never intended on joining a club, since i enjoy my free time, and usually go to the gym on those long breaks on tuesday and thursday. When i first arrived the lines and the sheer amount of people was overwhelming. I quickly cut the line, since I don’t have the patience required to wait on line for a silly club fair for 2 hours. The fair itself was nicely done, with each club possessing their own colorful stands and offering certain benefits to new members. After looking through all the different clubs, my initial thoughts were assured in that i still did not want to join any of Baruchs clubs.

Student Services Fair

I found this workshop very helpful due it’s new take on getting us involved. Instead of just sitting and listening to get our signature, we had to walk around Baruch to several areas such as the SACC room and the starr advisement center, in order to get out 9 holes punched and our signature signed. This proactive approach pushed me to discover these areas of Baruch which i would not have done otherwise, and it also helped me answer several of the lingering questions i had about Baruch.
