During this workshop they taught us how to “ace” an interview. We were handed a packet which had a lot of info such as sample questions interviewers might ask, how to dress, what we should do before an interview and other helpful tips. The packet will help people prepare for similar questions when they are really asked them and how we can learn about the company before the actual interview. We had a mock interview with the person who sat next to us and they gave us their opinion how we could improve. The guest speaker gave us a lot of useful information for example, she told us a story about when she was going in for a job interview and she was in the elevator with her interviewer. The purpose of her telling us that, was to inform us about how we should always present ourselves in a positive light and also an interview doesn’t begin when you sit in the chair but actually once you step inside the building. You should also be 30 minutes early to the building and 15 minutes early into the office. Rule of thumb is that, “Early is on time, on time is late, and late is unacceptable.”
Career Planning: Basic Interviewing 10/29
Impression Management
On October 13 in room 3-215, I attended the Impression Management workshop. Ms. Klein talked to us about how important a first impression is. Not only is our appearance crucial but also our attitude before and during an interview. She explained that we must clean up our facebook and any other other social network we have because it is so easy to find dirt on people through those sites. The importance of punctuality and communication when it comes to finding a job. Her points were all something I’m familiar with but it was nice to go through them in detail to understand that I have to start from now so that when the time comes, I’m prepared and ready to go.
Academic Advisement
I received the post card and email about the Freshman Academic Advisement for September 17 in room 5-215 and didn’t expect there to be so many of us. Even the staff was shocked at the massive crowd. When I finally got into the room, they gave me a folder with the list of courses I have to take and the minors available at Baruch.I highlighted all the courses I’m taking now and put an asterisk next to the ones I’m interested for second semester. Like I said before there were so many of us in that one office that I didn’t get the one-on-on time I was hoping for. Luckily, last FRO we had was with one of the advisors and she thoroughly explained each part to us. I am now familiar with what I need to take to be on the right path.
Club Fair
Since freshman convocation I became interested in the Latin Ballroom Club. I have yet to join I find that I enjoy my free time and don’t want to have to be in a certain place each Tuesday and Thursday. I’ll most likely join a club next year when I’m more comfortable with my schedule. I attended the Club Fair on September 24. My first thought as I walked into the gym that day was “Whoa! Could there BE any more people in here??” It was so interesting to see how each club represented themselves and gave away free stuff to lure us in. Either way, school spirit was definitely not lacking in there.
Freshman Reception 9/17
Freshman Reception in the Center for Academic Advisement, was the first workshop I went to at the beginning of this school year. It was overcrowded and they didn’t expect most of the freshman class to go to this workshop so they had to relocate most of the students to different classrooms. When the speaker finally arrived she basically told us what the Center for Academic Advisement did for us also where it was located. We learned about how we would double major if we wanted to, what an Academic Worksheet was, and how we would declare our major and/or minor at Baruch. It was a useful workshop that informed me about how to do those in the future.
Student Services Fair 10/13
At the student services fair we were given a paper where in order to get a signature for our FRO class we had to get 9 holes punched. To get holes punched we had to inquire about different services offered at Baruch. I visited many places such as, Starr Career Development Center, Center for Academic Advisement, Bursar’s Office, Study Abroad/WCIB, etc. They answered a variety of questions, I asked how we could be admitted to Baruch College Honors Program for students who are currently enrolled at Baruch College to when should we sign up for the simnet exam for excel. Also, they informed me about how to get tutoring at SACC (Student Academic Consulting Center) if I needed help in any of my courses. This was a helpful fair that answered most lingering questions I had.
Student Services Fair
The Student Services Fair was pretty interesting in how we had to go around and get our tickets stubbed in order to get our planners signed. I found this helpful in that we were engaged to asking questions, and hence, we got to know more about the different sections of the school, such as the health, athletics department, and the tutoring section. The raffle was also fun for me because I won a baruch sweater, which, might I add, is really warm.
Managing Relationships in College Workshop
I attended the Managing Relationships Workshop (Personal Enrichment Workshop) on October 8, 2009 and I thought it was okay. The speaker was trying to help us manage different types of relationships at a commuter college environment. We talked about family relationships, friendships, and romantic relationships in college. This took me out of my comfort zone because I was required to meet 10 different students and get their names/majors. I had to talk about my family relationships with my friends. This workshop met my expectations because it encouraged me to build important relationships in Baruch, despite the fact that I live out of state. I learned that I should avoid being the student that doesn’t have a college life outside of classes.
Ethics workshop
The examples used in the workshop were fun, entertaining, yet very educational. It indirectly taught us how to use ethics in real life and how we really do use it in everyday life. One activity was figuring out what documents were plagerized from a list of a few excerpts. It wasn’t too hard to figure them out. Another activity was that there could only be 7 people on a lifeboat, and we had to choose from about 12 people. Some of us students were used as the different characters on the list and we went through all of them to see which ones were the most important. That was the most interesting activity.
There were many more activities but the whole point of the workshop was to teach us young freshmans about ethics and how to use them as we grow up and get more mature.
I found this workshop extremely helpful.
10/13 Student Services Fair
Hello! I visited the Student Services Fair workshop for Academic Enrichment on October 13th from 12:30-2:30 PM. It was basically people sitting at tables from each office, such as STARR, talking about different aspects of studying at Baruch. I selected this workshop because I had some questions regarding internships and the like so this workshop was very helpful to me. I really recommend attending this workshop for future students because the people answer any question you may have. The only thing I didn’t like was that even though I had no questions for some of the other offices I still had to speak to 10 tables to get out, haha. Wasn’t that bad though.
