Today on November 3th 2009, I went to “A Retrospective Exhibition” by Mercedes Matter at the Sidney Miskin Gallery located at Baruch’s Administrative Center from 12:45pm to 1:15pm. Dr. Sandra Karskin was our tour guide who took us around the art gallery and gave us helpful background information concerning the works of art displayed. The fairly small art gallery was presented in chronological order which showed viewers how the style of the artist’s works changed with time. Mercedes Matter started to paint at a very young age and her talent is definitely portrayed in her works. It was interesting to find out how Mercedes started out painting oil on canvas pieces with bright, vibrant colors like the “Table Top Still Life” and later in life drew darker and more abstract works with charcoal on canvas such as the “Still Life with Skulls”. The Sidney Miskin Gallery is one of my favorite workshops and I recommend it to other students because it adds diversity to the workshops we are required to attend. I learned a lot more about the artist Mercedes Matter than I ever knew before and gained a whole new perspective on art.
