Mercedes Matter: A Retrospective Exhibition

This past Tuesday, November 3, 2009, I attended the mandatory Arts at Baruch workshop at the Sidney Mishkin Gallery on 22nd street. I, along with a friend, were given a tour by Sandra Karskin, who showed us a number of galleries by Mercedes Matter. When the tour first began, she asked us, “How many of you are planning to go into the business school?” Over half the people raised their hands. She then told us that art, even though hard to believe, is pure business and that there are many opportunities to make tons of money working with artworks. After introducing us with this fact, she finally went on to her tour, telling us about the works displayed. The pieces were quite abstract. You had to seriously look into the artworks to see the message it was trying to give. Overall, this workshop was very informing and interesting even though I had to wait over half-an-hour to get in.
