Mercedes Matters Gallery Tour

On December 1st, 2009, I attended the Mercedes Matters Gallery Tour in the Sydney Mishkin Gallery. The tour guide took us through several rooms where some of Mercedes Matters’ work was displayed. The guide spoke about the paintings briefly and told us to analyze them. Most of the paintings were abstract and it was difficult to determine what each painting was actually of. Although they were quite abstract, each painting provided its own sense of deep emotion. Initially most of the paintings looked very similar but as the tour went on I began to notice slight differences with respect to the time that the artist created the painting . The tour itself was not very intriguing. The guide did nothing to make the tour any more exciting but did provide some insight into the life of Mercedes Matters. I would like to revisit the gallery again on my own time to further develop my appreciation of her work and understand her perspective.
