Freshman Reception
If it were not a necessary aspect of our freshman seminar, I would not have been inclined to attend both the Freshman Reception along with the Study Abroad Fair on the same day, September 17. If I was not motivated by both a fellow student and the inclination to have another signature on my workshop requirements, I would have missed out on the opportunity to make my transition to Baruch College as simple, seam free and stress free as possible. Although it was extremely overcrowded, I was still able to receive vital information necessary to be successful at Baruch. I received information about the different majors available, necessary class requirements along with graduation requirements. It simplified and took a load off of the research that is needed to understand the basics of Baruch. Due to this I can focus more on researching the classes and programs that are of interest to me which will allow me to fulfill necessary requirements while receiving a more effective education. As commented by one of the speakers at the reception, they will hopefully figure out a way to make the information session less crowded next year.
Study Abroad Fair
On September 17, I attended the Study Abroad Fair. At the fair, I was excited to see all of the different schools which are available to Baruch students that provide us with a wonderful variety of programs, countries, and opportunities to expand our college experience. Baruch offers many different options to study abroad; study a semester, a year, student exchange where you live with a family abroad or live at a dorm. All of these wonderful choices which can even turn out to be quite affordable. For example SUNY New Paltz offers a wonderful program which combines both enriching classes and and the ability to provide community service in Kingston, Jamaica. The Study Abroad Fair was of great interest to me and luckily I was exposed to all the information I need to pursue my plans of studying abroad. I am already researching the many options and searching for the perfect fit for me. I can not wait to begin the application process.
Internship & Goal Setting
Today I attended a workshop on Career Planning located on the Vertical Campus building in room 1-107. The workshop was held on October 22, 2009 at 12:30pm-2:00pm. The presenter was the coordinator for Internships at Baruch College and she provided students with important information about internship opportunities along with an Undergraduate Internship Manual from the Career Development Center. Some topics discussed included the types of internships, setting specific learning objectives, internship opportunities and the Starr Career Development website. The main idea of this workshop was to acknowledge that the main priority is to familiarize yourself and adapt to the college environment while maintaining a competitive grade point average as a freshman before applying to an internship. I personally thought this workshop was incredibility informative and answered many of my anticipated questions I had in mind as a college freshman. I look forward to future workshops in career exploration such as the resume writing and interviewing workshop in the upcoming weeks. I recommend this workshop to other students because it was very helpful and the valuable information I gained from the workshop will take me one step closer to becoming successful here at Baruch College.
Avon Breast Cancer Walk
On Oct. 11 I attended the Avon Breast Cancer walk around Bryant Park. It was the first workshop I had been to outside of the school and on a weekend which was on a Sunday. I was really tired because I usually do not wake up so early on a weekend but I wore a pink shirt and was prepare to cheer on dedicated walkers. When I got to Bryant Park, my freshman seminar group and I went to one of the cheering station where we would show our support by cheering. Although it was awkward at first, we soon warm up to the cheering because it was hard not to be motivated by the other volunteers cheering. They were very enthusiastic and seem to really enjoy cheering with their bright pink shirts and cheering devices while sporting big smiles on their faces. It actually felt really good to be able to encourage people who were helping a good cause. Although they were tired, all the walkers young and old really enjoyed the cheers. They seem to brighten up and smiled a lot when they heard the cheering committee. Although this workshop did not take me out of my comfort zone since I had been in other walks before, it met my expectations because nothing felt better at that moment than to have the ability to help another and I would recommend it to other students.
Club Fair
On Sept. 24, I attended Baruch’s Club Fair in the main gym. I got there extra early where only a few clubs were setting up their tables because most of the clubs were not present yet. After most of the clubs were set up, people started pouring in. There were many different clubs and I felt it was very diverse. Clubs ranged from the Hip Hop Club, where members sing or rap to songs, to the Golden Key Club which was a honor society club based on academics. Almost every table was offering refreshments in form of food and candy and lots of fliers with all the club information on it which may be the reason why so many students were present. The club representatives were very friendly and helpful while providing information and answering questions. Although some clubs are only for upper upperclassmen, there were many other clubs that freshman can join. Two clubs I was interested in were VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program) and the Beta Alpha Psi. Both focus on business majors and since I am planning to go into business, I was interested in those two clubs. The club fair did not take me out of my comfort zone and did not really meet my expectations. I have been to club fairs before from my old school and considering the size of the Baruch, I expected there to be more clubs. Overall the club fair was fun and I learned a lot about the different clubs at Baruch and will recommend it to students who want to be more active in college life.
Freshman Reception
On Sept. 17, after I ended my last class of the day, I headed over to fifth floor to attend my first freshman seminar workshop. Although I was on time, when I stepped out of the elevator, I saw so was everyone else. There was absolutely no place to stand considering the mob of freshmen waiting on line to squeeze into a small room. There were so many freshman attending that despite all the pushing and shoving, I did not receive a folder containing all the information they were discussing. A lady told the ones who did not get one to come back another day to pick it up. Since I was not one of the lucky students that got in early, I did not receive any refreshments. What I received instead was helpful information on different majors we can choose, requirement classes and graduation requirements. Although this workshop was informative and helpful, there were so many students that I did not have a chance to ask any questions. It took me out of my comfort zone because I had never seen so many people at a school event. Even though it was extremely crowded, I felt that I learned a lot from the information given and I would recommend it to other students.
Baruch Library Tour
The library tour we took on Sept. 8 was very informative especially since I would be visiting it often during my stay at Baruch. Although I have seen the library before, I never knew it was so big with so many floors. Jane showed us where to activate our library cards and how to borrow and return books. She also inform us of the many other things we can borrow besides books like laptops and calculators. There are so many computers and study place available for use which is extremely convenient considering how many students are at Baruch. Jane also inform us on how to print papers and that we have a certain amount of money we can use for printing. I feel that I would be visiting the library quite often to study due to the quiet atmosphere and the helpful resources.
Club Fair
On September 24, 2009, I went to the Baruch Club Fair held in the main gym located in the basement. Since I, along with a few colleagues arrived there before the fair began, we walked around the gym to look around the beautiful decorations of the gym and saw club members and officials setting up their tables, getting ready to attract more newcomers to join their clubs. When most clubs are being setup, I went to the clubs that attracted me the most, which are the VITA that provides free tax filing for a certain groups of people, and some groups that are related to economics and accountants. I was able to find out a lot of information that I did not previously know, which helped me a lot on choosing what clubs to join that will be suitable for my preferences. Over all, this experience is very informing and interesting since this is the first Baruch club fair I have ever attended.
Avon Breast Cancer Walk
On Sunday, October 11, 2009, I went to the Avon Breast Cancer Walk where our cheering squad was located on Bryant Park. It was a sunny day and a great day to attend the walk. There were many people there and there was a lot of excitement. There were a lot of people wearing pink to show support, along with pompoms and speakerphones. Everybody that walked by showed courage and will to fight breast cancer. It was great seeing that a lot of people went, not only them, but many of the people in my freshman seminar group also. It was a great chance to get to know each other a bit more through cheering for others. In addition to the Avon Breast Cancer Walk, I would recommend others to also participate in the American Cancer Society Breast Cancer walk as well because I also walk for that one. Not only that I would recommend others to join the other walks that fights for cancer like the Aids Walk or the March of Dimes.
