Managing Relationship

On October 8, 2009, from 12:45pm-2pm at room 1-107, I went to a personal enrichment workshop called Managing Relationship.  Managing Relationship workshop was extremely informative and very crowded. The workshop talked about different relationship, such as friendship, family, romance, and business and also how to transition ourselves from high school to college. Time is an important measure in college, especially since all of us freshmen are new to college. I have been spending less time with my friends and family and more time in school trying to finish a paper or studying for an exam. The speaker gave us an idea on how to balance out the time between school work and own free leisure time. She also told us about how meeting new people in college are good for networking and the importance of networking in the business field. This workshop was also pretty fun because we get to walk around the room and interact with different people that we haven’t met yet. This workshop exceeded my expectation and I really recommend this workshop to anyone who hasn’t been there yet. It is really useful and helped me with many personal problems that many of us face everyday.

Avon Breast Cancer Walk

This morning the commute was long and dreadful on my way to Bryant Park where the October 11, 2009 Avon Breast Cancer walk was hosted from 9:45am-12:00pm. However, seeing the motivated and devoted walkers fighting to find a cure for breast cancer made my trip worth the commute. Our group was assigned to a specific cheering station where walkers would pass by as we cheered them on. Many volunteers and walkers showed support for the fight against breast cancer not only by wearing pink but also by using loud noisemakers and decorative hats. We wanted the walkers to feel appreciated for what a great cause there fighting for and having the strength to walk miles and miles against breast cancer. We saw walkers both men and women, old and young united for one purpose. It was really inspiring and a great experience. I definitely recommend students to take part in their community and make a difference even if it’s as simple as cheering on walkers to show support. I look forward in participating in the Avon Breast Cancer Walk 2010 and become an active walker as well as a fundraiser. I’m glad that Jane Odartey who is our peer mentor told us about the Breast Cancer Walk  that benefits the community and promotes a great cause.

Club Fair

The club fair was a great experience for me. I met representatives from many different clubs such as Student Government, Anime Club, Accounting Society and many more. I actually signed up for two clubs and they are Student Government and Muslim Student Association. I joined Student Government because I want to be more involved at Baruch and gain more leadership experience. I joined MSA because I myself am a Muslim, so I can easily relate to those who are already in the club. I enjoyed my time at the club fair because I had the opportunity to interact with people and see what Baruch has to offer outside of the classrooms. I gained a better understanding of the Baruch culture as a result of the club fair. The club fair has opened up a variety of interests for me that were formerly unknown to me such as an interest in accounting. Due to this new found interest, I may even take classes in accounting and join the club itself to gain a better understanding of the field. The club fair overall has definitely been an enlightening and fun experience for me.

Managing Relationships in College

Yesterday October 8th 2009 I attended to workshop called Managing Relationships in College. This started at 12:45 in room 1-107. The room was filled up with tons of people, i guess that meant this workshop would be a good one. The speaker discussed relationships, 3 kinds of them. First went Family, mostly about how was we get older we our relationships become more mature, that being said our parents will have to accept this. Next was friends, in high-school your with the same people everyday for four years.. (I was). When in college you have the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends everyday. That is something everyone should take advantage of cause it can help you out in the real world when it comes to knowing different cultures and how to communicate with individuals. The last kind of relationship spoken about was romantic, dealing with one and allowing it to become to serious can interfere with college and managing your work. So if the relationship ends, look at it in a positive way not a negative way. Everything happens for a reason and you shouldn’t let it bother you. Although this workshop went over many points i had already known, it still felt good to hear them again and discuss them further, i enjoyed spending my time there.

Managing Relationships

Today I  attended the workshop for managing relationships.  This workshop focused on the obstacles students can face after the transition into college.  Students must balance their academics with the time they spend with friends and family.  I can say that the transition into college for me has been very hard with the work just piling up.  After going to this workshop I learned that i wasn’t the only one facing this obstacle.  We were advised to join a website called LinkedIn.  This is a website is a network to keep in touch with professionals to exchange information.  I will definitely use this network in the future.  We were then asked to walk around the room and introduce yourself to another person.  This was probably my favorite part as i met about 5 new people in a matter of minutes and we exchanged information.  I recommend this workshop to anyone that is having a tough transition into college and it helped me get my priorities straight.

Creating Your Own Major

This workshop was probably the most worth while workshop to me.  Before this moment i had no idea it was even possible to create your own major.  There are many steps in this process, as we heard the feedback from a senior that’s done this before.  This student spoke about the importance of creating your own major and the steps to complete this process.  She explained, how it shows the uniqueness in the individual that’s done this and  how the school looks at you differently.  To get this approved you need 4 different signatures of approval.  Even though I am only a freshman I am really considering creating my own major in the future.  By the end of this workshop I am happy to say that I am really looking to create my own major in the future.  This workshop has taught me the importance of creating my own major and the rigorous steps that proceed it.  I recommend this workshop to anyone who is looking to stick and and be unique here at Baruch College.

Ethics Workshop

After attending the ethics workshop I can now say i really learned a lot about ethics.  This workshop got every individual involved in every question and scenario that we discussed.  The workshop took off with the teacher reading a scenario out loud and based on our definition of ethics, we gave our feedback on what we thought the right thing to do.  After this we were then divided into groups and have been given a very tough scenario.  Each member had to discuss with their team of what they thought was necessary to do.  When we were done discussing it with our teams, we then spoke about it out loud as everyone provided their feedback.  I learned a lot from this workshop not only because it was ethics but because every student was interactive the hole time.  I’ve learned that in the business world it is very important to how you treat your peers and how it is important to practice ethics.

Create Your Own Major

Today on October, 8th 2009, I attended a workshop that talked about creating your own major. This workshop seemed interesting because there aren’t many colleges that gives students the opportunity to create their own major. This workshop was located on the VC building in room 2-190 from 12:30pm-2pm. Creating your own major may sound easy but their are many prerequisites before one can create their own major. One must have a minimum of thirty credits, with at least twenty-four liberal art credits and also receive permission from 4 different individuals by getting their signatures. Also their is an essay one must write explaining why they created this major and the benefits from it.  I learned a lot of new things from attending this workshop and I recommend my fellow Baruch students to attend this workshop because it allows them to create a major they want to do and be unique about it.

Creating your own major workshop

Today I attended the “Creating Your Own Major” workshop at 12:30 in VC-2-190. I really learned many things that i didn’t know before. We learned the rules of actually creating your own major. Baruch has given the option of creating your own major for 5 years now. It is something that not every college offers. Students get the chance to create a name for their own major.  Even though not many people do it, it shows initiative, uniqueness and it is a great conversation topic for any job interview you may go on. Wendy Heyman ran the workshop, and she articulated all the steps to making your own major. She is part of the career development center by Baruch and she helps all students who are interested in creating their own major. I thought it was very interesting and i learned information that i never knew before. It was really great and I recommend everyone to go to this workshop.

Make Your Own Major

Today October 8 2009, I attended to workshop called Make Your Own Major. It  took place in the vertical campus in room 2-190, from 12:30-2:00. At first I did not know what it was about, I just new I needed to attend it to complete one of my mandatory workshops. When I went I met Wendy who led the whole program. She has asked me to help her out with starting the workshop. My job was to make sure everyone signed in correctly so I stood  near the computer and helped out. After starting I learned about actually making my own major. In the Weissman School of Arts and Sciences you can do that. You must get it approved by various people and if that gets done it can work. There were people there who had done this, allowing me to believe it cause i saw it life. A senior spoke about what she did and how she is majoring in black studies and history. I find being able to do this very unique and it allows you to stand out. This was very interesting and entertained me the whole time.
