Ethics Workshop

This past Thursday afternoon, I had the oppurtunity to participate in the Ethics Workshop. Directly after the Freshmen Reception concluded, I rushed to the third floor to attend this lecture. The speaker spoke to us about the philosophy of ethics and the moral values people should actually abide by. She gave out handouts that included some real life cases, and then explained the various decisions people can make in these situations. For example, there was one incident where there was a boat with 15 people on it, and the boat sank, but the emergency lifeboat can only fit 8 people. So we had to make the decisions of who to take with us on the lifeboat and who to leave there to drown. The handout included a decription of every person, so we were making decisions based on that. It was very surprising to listen to the choices some people made. She also continued to the topic of plagiarism and explained that it is strictly forbidden, and if it’s committed, there are various consequences that follow. There were a few handouts that were given out, with examples of plagiarism and examples of originality, and we were told to classify them. At the conclusion of the class, I understood that morality is something that is very significant in life, and there are many cases which are much more intricate that you think.

Freshmen Reception

This past Thursday afternoon, September 17, I attended the Freshmen Reception. After concluding my last class of the day, I was on my way to the fifth floor where I was met by hundreds of other students waiting for their entry to the workshop. The faculty definitely underestimated our attendance and did not expect that many students to be there. It was so crowded that the event had to be moved to an additional room so that there would be an adeqaute amount of space for students to actually move, and most of all to participate. We were told that this year the Freshmen Reception attendance had by far exceeded that of previous years. The faculty were extremely kind and helpful, informing  us on some general key points that were crucial for graduating. They also gave us critical information regarding GPAs and and information on the school in general. Overall, this workshop was very beneficial and informative, and the faculty did a great job to keep it that way, considering the full-house situation.

freshman reception

On Thursday, September 17, all feshmans were required to attend the Freshman Reception held on the fifth floor in the Vertical Campus. When I got there, there was a huge crowd of freshman’s waiting to enter. It was obvious that no one had expected that many students to show up. However, the faculty did a great job of making a quick and efficient way of getting all of us into class rooms. Once we were seated Ms. Brown passed out some hand outs in folders, which many of us had recieved earlier as well. She then reviewed the hand outs that would be important to for us to have, such as the hand out thats listed all the required courses for a bachelors degree, and a sheet that converted number grades into letter grades. I thought the reception had a good turn-out because it wasn’t long and boring, but short and informational.

Freshman Reception

Approximately one week prior to last Thursday, I received a postcard in the mail informing me of a Freshman seminar at Baruch. The postcard claimed it would be a great opportunity to get accustomed to my new surroundings. After finishing classes on Thursday, I went to where the reception was supposed to held and found myself in the middle of a massive crowd unsure of what to do at this point. The staff was unsure too apparently. The turnout for this event was ten times higher than they had anticipated. Uncertain, the staff scrambled to put us all into rooms and attempted to explain how things hadn’t gone as planned. Regardless, they did their best to tell us what they needed to, albeit in a rushed manner. Believe it or not, their rushed manner was surprisingly beneficial, since all of the information they gave had been given to me prior during orientation. This way, the reception served as not a long, drawn out repeat of orientation, but rather a concise, helpful reminder of what to expect during my time at Baruch.

Freshman Reception

Right after my last class on Thursday, I went to this Freshman Reception. As I got to the fifth floor, I knew exactly where the reception was being held because of the hundreds of people waiting outside. When I saw this huge crowd, I decided to go eat lunch and wait for this crowd to diminish. When I finished eating my lunch, I went back to the Freshman Reception and entered in my raffle ticket, but never ended up winning the raffle. As I waited on the small line, I drank the complimentary lemonade. When it was finally my turn, I spoke to the extremely kind woman about the School of Business and how to get in, and she also helped me resolve some personal issues I had with one of my classes. She let me know who to go to and how to approach my dilemma. She also let me know that if there are any problems or questions I have, that this was the right place to go to. I was overall very happy with this reception and got a lot out of it. Its good to know that there are such nice people working in this department and that they are always happy to help me with any issues I have going on.

Freshmen Reception

Last Thursday I went to the freshman reception to end my day off to see new people. To my surprise there was a big crowd waiting in line to go there too.  The people were extremely nice and friendly. It was great to know that there were people there to help and guide us to making our career at Baruch a success.  I am glad they handed out those folders that contained such vital information about graduation requirements and the grade point averages. Besides receiving information on tier requirements, I found it very helpful to give us a list of advisors that can assist us on our inquiries and how to contact them.  Overall, the reception was a great way to meet new people and to my satisfaction, the workshop answered all my questions and even provided tasty refreshments.

Freshman Reception

Right after my last class, I went straight to the Freshman Reception at 12:30. There were hundreds of people all heading into the room. I was trying to figure out with a friend how everyone is supposed to fit unless its like an auditorium or something of that size. I decided to go sit somewhere and eat lunch so that the line would clear out. After I ate, I went to the reception where I entered into their raffle, but didn’t win. The reception was very informative. I asked about the CDC, career development center. I asked where it was and about internship opportunities. The advisor told me that they give most business internships for student in the Zicklin School of Business, in their Junior and Senior years of college. I also was able to have some lemonade, but all the of the cookies were eaten. Some group of guys were also trying to get me to go on the Freshman Philadelphia trip for $20 dollars, but I wasn’t that interested. Overall it was a good experience.

FRESHMAN RECEPTION

On 09/17/09, me and some friends attended the freshman reception. I was expecting a few people but to my surprise it was more like the whole freshman class attended this seminar. Trying to get into the room was a nightmare, I was waiting on line thinking I was not going to even get into that room. I asked the people around me why there were so many people, and a guy said that he thought it was required for all incoming freshman. I waited on line for about ten minutes and i finally got into the room, the room was more disastrous than the line. Everyone was pushing and it was hard to even breath. Since I didn’t go in as early as the others I didn’t get any cookies or drinks. The ladies in that room gave out a folder filled with information that all incoming freshman needed. Overall the reception was informative, although the reception was hectic I got a lot of good information from that folder.

Freshmen Reception

On Thursday the 17th, I, along with some classmates, attended our first workshop to fulfill our freshmen seminar class requirements.  Out of the many provided for us, we chose to attend this workshop because we believe nothing will be more important than to get a grasp of the requirements we need to fulfill in order to achieve academic success.  Although this workshop is not required for every freshman, many, including us attended, which created a huge crowd by the location of the event.  Other than having to wait on the long line, I believe people attended this workshop have not been daunted by any part of this workshop.  Cookies and lemonade were served, along with a folder included in which is very useful information regarding required curriculum for different majors, core classes requirements and a lot more.  Other than being fully informed by staffs, I also had many of my questions answered which will be very helpful to my future academic career.  Overall, this workshop is organized and informative, and I will be looking forward to participate in other workshops in the upcoming weeks.

Freshmen Reception

After a day of class, I headed to the freshmen reception on Thursday September 17, from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM. As I got there many freshmen were already crowded around the entrance and waiting to be told what to do and where to go. Since it was Baruch’s first time to have this reception as a workshop, everyone was a bit lost and I was pretty confused. One of the advisers then told a group of freshmen to enter through the back door for faster access. As I followed along I end up not receiving the folder that was being hand out from the front, but the advisers told us that we are able to pick it up any other time when it isn’t so crowded. As I enter one of the rooms the adviser, Donnie Brown, talked about the papers that were handed out in the folder. She told us about the majors that we can study here at Baruch, and how to obtain a specific degree for that major. The tier requirements that are needed in order to enter our major program and to graduate from Baruch. Donnie also talked about how to calculate our GPA and what it takes to gain it. This reception was truly helpful. They made students feel comfortable and as if we are all in it together. They were extremely friendly and provided information that I believe every new incoming student should know.
