On Tuesday, December 1st, 2009, I visited the Mercedes Matters gallery and went on the tour. The tour started out by having everybody go into the first room with the tour guide, and then look at the various paintings. The first room was on her early years. The second room was on her middle years. The third room was on her later years. Each room had very similar paintings, as this woman seemed to paint the same thing over and over in different ways. The tour guide told us very basic information and then encouraged us to analyze the paintings. The explanations the students gave were very simple and the tour guide seemed to agree with all of them. After the brief, twenty minute tour, our group was moved out of the gallery as a new one entered. My primary thought when all of this was done was “Is that it?” With just a few small walls of artwork, and nothing outstanding or particularly noteworthy, this exhibit is best classified as boring and completely uninteresting. My fellow students seemed to agree.
Managing Relations
On Thursday October 8, I attended a personal enrichment workshop on Managing relationships. This workshop was designed to tell people the importance of staying in touch with people close to you such as parents and relatives. One thing that I from attending this workshop was that I am lucky to be able to keep in touch with my parents and relatives because I go to a school in the city and live at home. The workshop explained the importance of networking because it is a big plus when going into the business world and getting a job, and they told us that we need to always make new friends because it is important when you have a job. Overall I thought this workshop was very useful, and I was able to relate to what was discussed because I have a good relationship with my parents and relatives.
Mercedes Matter Gallery Tour
The tour at Mercedes Matter was very interesting and informative. The tour guide showed us around a set of paintings made by an artist that was part of a large movement in the 1900’s. The artist was a modernist but more specifically part of the expressionism movement. This movement was created to express feelings felt by the artist through a series of different shapes and colors but her paintings were very abstract in that the title tells you there is an item present but it is very hard to see it because she painted it to be the way she saw it instead of the way most common people would interpret it. It did inform me a lot about art and how artists can depict different types of emotions through the use of shape, lines and color. This tour really let me in on the art world and taught me a lot about how art can portray messages with in it’s content to get a even larger message across.
Job Fair Opportunities
This workshop on job fair opportunities was probably the most helpful for me as a inspiring business student looking for good internships from businesses across the country that can lead to a good, stable job in my future. It gave me a lot of insight on the little things that I can do to prepare me for either a job interview or even doing the job itself. One thing was attire. The way you dress really sets either a positive or negative view on you, even if you are the nicest, sweetest person in the world. Another thing was resume preparation. They informed us about the proper ways to set up a resume including what to put on it, how to write it and the order in which you should place each one. Interviewing was another big help to me. It gave me a lot of insight on follow-up questions, what to ask, what to say, and how to answer questions. I think anyone could have learned from this workshop. I know I did, and I enjoyed it very much.
Breast Cancer Walk
The Breast Cancer Walk was an event to raise awareness and a step forward to finding a cure for breast cancer. This event was held in Bryant Park and from my experience, it was a very enjoyable event. I’ve done the Breast Cancer Walk for the last two years in Prospect Park down in Brooklyn, New York and I had a lot of fun doing them. It is a nice way to spend a Sunday morning relaxing with friends, getting caught up with them and also getting a little bit of exercise in the process. Oh, and of course we are all doing this for a much bigger, more universal reason which is to try and end or possibly limit the tragic effects of Breast Cancer. It was a cold, brisk and windy morning but that did not prevent anyone from participating. A 3 mile walk may sound like a lot but considering what we were doing it for, it simply a minuscule number because we walk so much more the good of the health of our fellow human beings across the world. I sure had fun and I definitely will participate next year.
Impression Management
On November 24th I attended my favorite workshop, which was about impression management. This was without a doubt the most interesting workshop I attended because unlike most of the other workshops the speaker kept the audience involved throughout almost the entire workshop and because I was aware that making a good first impression is key because I learned about it in psychology but I had no idea how important it really was in the business world before this workshop. The speaker put great emphasis on putting yourself out there and creating a great number of connections because most jobs are gotten through connections rather than simply interviewing and online searches. As an 18 year old freshman in college I don’t have much real world experience when it comes to the job market and things of that sort so that is why this workshop was especially important for me, it showed me that first impressions are a key part of making connections and getting a good job.
Suicide Prevention
On November 19th I attended the Suicide Prevention workshop, which consisted of a student made 30 minute documentary about the dangers of depression and suicide. This was a very powerful workshop in my opinion because it did not simply give us facts about suicide but showed us a video that contained the thoughts and feelings of people who had attempted suicide and people who were close to someone who had taken their own life. This especially stuck with me because I’ve been in a situation where a friend of mine was depressed and considering suicide and I was asked to not tell anyone, but this workshop showed me that it is not a betrayal of trust to go and seek out professional help for your friends or yourself. Overall I feel that this was an important workshop for me to attend particularly because as a college student it’s important to realize that not everything will go as you plan but there are always people there to help and support you.
Job Fair Prep
On Thursday November 19, I attended a workshop which was designed to prepare students for Job Fairs. The workshop had many students, not only freshmen. It featured two people from Verizon that specialize in recruiting and interviewing people for jobs in their company. This workshop was very helpful because it discussed several important things that are needed in the business world. We were handed a packet with important information such as how to “sell ourselves”, as well as info about the Job Fair. After this, we were given tips on how to prepare for the job fair, such as having questions ready to ask, and what types of questions the companies like to hear. They also explained the importance of networking in the business world, and one part of networking was knowing how to “sell yourself”. One example of selling yourself would be the “elevator speech”, in which you would introduce yourself. Overall, this workshop was very helpful to me because it explained to me the things I need to know before I go out into the business world.
Managing Relationships in College
Being college students, I have realized that my relationships with my mother, father, sister and other close family members might start to diminish because of school work Also, because I will be spending roughly probably the most part of my day in Baruch College meaning less time I will have to spend with my family. This workshop about managing relationships with the ones you keep close really gave me several suggestions of how to stay in touch with these people such as my mother, father, sister, girlfriend, etc. One advantage that Baruch College, or most CUNY schools for that matter, has over most other colleges such as State Universities is that we commute and don’t dorm so that can help in keeping the relationships in tact because we have that advantage of going home and seeing our close friends and family members everyday or every other day instead of every weekend or every month. I am a firm believer that time away from the ones you keep close actually does help the relationship grow stronger, but too much time away can make it worse so this workshop did help me in how to manage my time away from them.
