This workshop consisted of a video and a class discussion. The video is an original work that college sudents created in order to reveal what suicide is, how depression leads to suicide and how one can take action to prevent oneself or a loved one from committing the act. I believe that the videowas very informative becasue it depicts symptoms of suicide that include depression, lack of motivation and aggression. I also learned that if I notice someone hinting at the thought of suicide or about to attempt it, they will usually outwardly express it. All of this information is relative to me because if I ever have a friend or loved one exhibiting these symptoms, I will definitely make sure not to ignore them. The class discussion was also helpful because it allowed us to express our experiences and viewpoints on suicide. From the responses of the otehr students and the video presentatio, I learned how to effectively deal with a problem that can potentially strike any individual.
Suicide Prevention Awareness
Suicide Prevention
On November 19 I attended my last workshop called Sucide Prevention in room 3-195 at 1:00. We were shown a short video that a few students made to honor students that had died from suicide and to help raise awareness of suicide so that it can be prevented in the future. All the people shown in the film was related to suicide in some way whether it was their sibling who had committed suicide or they themselves attempted suicide in the past. Although suicide was not a new topic for me since it was taught in my high school, the video really showed me the reason why people attempt suicide which was what I wanted to learn about. Sucidal feelings mainly results from intense depression and is described as being ” trapped in a long dark tunnel with no light at the other side”. The video also advise us to seek help if we have suicidal intentions or help others who have depression get professional help. This workshop met my expectations and answer many questions I had on this subject which is why I would recommend it to other students.

Job Fair Prep
On Thursday, November 19, I went to a career exploration workshop called Job Fair Prep, from 12:30 to 2:00 PM. When I got to the first floor multipurpose room, there was line of people waiting to sign in and be seated. The place was crowded with many freshmen, sophomores, and a few juniors and seniors. Two men from Verizon Company came to talk to us about how to prepare ourselves for the Job Fair held today, Friday November 20th. There were packets handed out that was very useful on how to prepare yourselves for interviews. The packet had examples on what question would be asked and a few example answers, formats for resume and “Thank You” letters. The men from the Verizon Company also told us to always be prepared to “sell yourself”, even in simple places such as elevators because you never know who you might meet. They told us what information to include when we introduce ourselves and to keep it under 2 minutes. Always keep eye contact and use a confident voice, it shows that you are engaged and strong in the conversation and forces other people to listen to what you say. Although this Workshop was quite long compared to the other workshops I had ever been to, I learned a lot from this workshop and I definitely recommend it. This workshop helps us understand the working environment and how to prepare ourselves for it. It helped me know what I have to do in order to prepare for an interview and how to stand out compare to the rest of the competitors fighting for the position.
Suicide Prevention
Today on November 19th 2009 I attended the suicide prevention workshop. This workshop took off with a 30 minute documentary that was created by students in various school around the country. These students have either attempted suicide or have a friend that took their life through suicide. After watching this video for just 5 minutes I can say that I am deeply convinced that no matter what, it is not worth it to take your own life despite your problems. There are many ways around it as we learned through the discussion after class. I also felt very secure knowing that there are counselors at any time during the day in case I am feeling depressed or very stressed out from my school work. There were many students who actually faced depression in the past and as I heard their opinions I know for sure I am never going to commit suicide. I recommend everyone no matter what to see what this workshop is all about as it taught me the importance of life and the importance of what it means to be understanding of the world around us.
The Truth About Suicide
On Thursday, November 19th, I attended a Student Life workshop about the truth of suicude. In this workshop, the speaker was an advisor who helps students cope with their problems in Baruch. He explained to us, that if we ever needed to talk to someone about anything, he is there to help. This really made me happy because now I know that if I’m having any problems adjusting to college that I can go to him. Next, he showed us a 30 minute film about the friends and relatives of people who have committed suicide or attempted to commit suicide before. This really opened up my eyes on this topic, because I learned that suicide is extremely common with young adults in college. I thought this was a really sad workshop and the video really got me to think about how terrible and scary suicide is. It was also nice to know that colleges are taking more action into suicide prevention.
Basic Interviewing
On November 12th, 2009 I attended a Career workshop that taught the students what to look for when trying to accomplish a interview. The speaker was an advisor from the STARR center within Baruch and gave us personal experience on what she realized as she had more interviews with others. I learned the inside basics of interviewing and what to do for an interview beforehand. There were not alot of people in the workshop but that was due to the many career workshops during the month. The workshop was insightful and helped enlighten various questions about interviews that many people had. The workshop could have had more personal experience than slides because the experiences the speaker told us were more insightful than the slides that were being shown as she speak. That is my opinion however. Overall, the workshop was helpful and the speaker told the students that there was an advanced workshop continuing the interview topic and also the services that the STARR center provides tot he students.
Freshman Reception
Despite a huge crowd of freshman gathered all in one room, and the fact that each counselor had limited time to help each student, the freshman reception gave me plenty of information i needed on classes and the college life. They gave me a lot of advice on scheduling and managing my time sufficiently to get good results in all my classes. Although I only spent a short amount of time, probably 3-4 minutes with a counselor, I felt even more comfortable afterward around Baruch knowing more about what I needed to do to become a more successful student. The refreshments weren’t half bad either. Regardless of the short amount of time I spent there, my questions seemed to have been answered. The results of coming out of that room just made waiting in that line for about 30 minutes a whole lot more worth it.
